about 28 episodes in and watching for the first time, why is is that half these episodes almost feel like filler "monster of the week"?

Zeta's a much more linear story than 0079 is, you'll probably enjoy that more.

also, this show has a lot of really depressing stuff that sort of happens but isn't expanded on.

there is that woman and her son that get dropped off on earth and try to go back to their hometown only to realize it's been reduced to a wasteland. then white base takes off and basically leaves the woman and her son for dead but it's not really expanded on

also the spy that kai meets dies in an attempt to help him. she had siblings/orphans she was taking care of that don't have anybody to help them with her dead. but it doesn't even really get brought up.

Oh yeah, there's a minor followup to that

Zeta is the same, but fights feel meaningless and not as memorable as 79's. ZZ's a special case, better fights but tonally opposite to Z's seriousness. Overall 79's the best one, it just keeps getting better.

They were "monster of the week", or, more precusely, "new toy for kids of the week". The only difference between OG Gundam and Mazinger Z is that gundam has an overarching story

Zeta is much worse about the MotW stuff, it just disguises it slightly better. 0079 at least has the plot always move forward which isn't the case in Zeta.

>"new toy for kids of the week"
Nah at the time the sponsors had no intention of making toys out of the villain robots, wasn't until the model kits later and most of that was after the show was pretty much over.

It would have been their intention if kids were buying any of the gundam toys, that's why those kinds of episodes are created in the first place. Gundam was just considered a miserable failure by the toy company that funded it because the audience wasn't kids.

Itโ€™s fucked up in the same way real life is. Stuff is bad and usually out of your control, thatโ€™s what makes it the most interesting toy commercial

yeah, the bad guy of the week is a very important part of the Gundam experience
especially when every single one of those bad guys of the week are deeply tied into the backstory and have their own stories and hopes that are tragically cut short because they meet the White Devil of the Federation

No, but EVERY SINGLE giant robot show at the time had such formula and will mostly continue to use it until the 90s, at least. Gundam afterwards tend to avoid this, you'll get a fight every episode but not necessarily featuring a new big enemy, get used to see a lot of Zakus II/Hizacks/Zakus III exploding.

I don't know why you'd assume that, given that they didn't do anything like that for Zambot or Daitarn (which sold much better early toy sales than Gundam). Okawara's always said that Clover were never interested in commercialising the 'villains', so he had a comparatively free hand in designing them
