Oh hey, this looks like a cool reboo--
>The stakes are fake as hell
>Everything falls flat in favor of a "save the girl" plot
Huh. No wonder nobody talks about this.

Oh also;
>Let's remove the alien from GR-1 to put into this one we found in America
But, wouldn't that be counter-productive, since it's imprinted to Daisaku?
>Lol nope, GR-1 can still move with willpower

Nobody talked about it because it didn't have subs until very recently.

Nobody talks about it because nobody subbed it for ages and it wasn't a sequel to the OVA

I watched it dubbed

It is just really boring

I watched it subbed, I didn't mind it. It was neat to see more combat with GR-1, although I remember being a bit disappointed with whatever reveals they did with the lore, I think the OP implied something more fun that they backed out of, but maybe it was meant to be implicit. Not the worst thing, not the greatest, but inoffensive.

I don't know what I was expecting. Maybe a masterpiece in storytelling. But a lot of the plot threads lead nowhere, and fall short. They had the hot older American lady kiss the teenage boy on the lips, and that confused me. There was no build-up between the two characters for that to happen. She just... kissed him and called him a man, I guess? But then they showed how she regretted doing that, when Daisaku came to her room later. So like... yeah.
Anyway, now that I think about it, I was expecting an "alien invasion" plot similar to GRA and SRWOG, where the giant robos were protectors of Earth. But because all the robos were destroyed, that means the anti-humanity fail-safe was activated in the form of a final robo. Something about that rubbed me the wrong way.
Also, I guess where they went with V was hinted at since the beginning, but it's hard to parse why Daisaku went all-in on saving her. It didn't feel like she needed to be saved. There weren't any scenes that showed a conflicting nature to be human.

Also I guess it made sense for Hodges to get a taste of his own medicine (becoming an operator), but I can't say I enjoyed this series as a whole. The whole Avatar implanting thing made zero sense.

I think if they'd tried to make that interstellar war an active event it would've flamed out hard. Just makes me think of Lovecraft or 40k or those godawful Rama sequels - explaining the barely understandable or the mythic is a damn difficult thing to do well. Keeping it in the background was the right call, even if I did want to see more of it.

>I don't know what I was expecting. Maybe a masterpiece in storytelling.
Yeah... I went in with little expectations and some hesitance. I don't think you'd be impressed by any Giant Robo OVA-inspired works aside from maybe Big O, just because of the sheer high bar. You could field the same accusation of plot threads at the OVA but I think that's a bit unfair to what the OVA was intended to be.
>They had the hot older American lady kiss the teenage boy on the lips, and that confused me.
You're going to love Neon Genesis Evangelion... maybe it was meant to be a reference? I don't know, I enjoyed that moment because she looked like she was soft and smelled nice.
>I was expecting an "alien invasion" plot
Iirc that's what the OP seemed to be implying, but I don't know what happened in the end. I do wish the show was more robot and lore centric than how character-focused it was, at least specifically for those characters, but it wasn't the worst thing on Earth that stood still.

You're right, although anything done tastefully and subtly would have been dissatisfying for some people, it's hard to differentiate wanting to know more vs realizing you're supposed to be asking questions and you're supposed to be working with limited information. That being said, I recall very very few hints about any external terror or anything to be really worried about other than Big Fire.

Cute. I'm a millennial that had a sugar overdose from watching Gurren-Lagann. Thought I'd check out the Giant Robo and Tetsujin-28 shows. They seemed neat enough to check out.
I think The Day The Earth Stood Still is the better GR adaptation, but I'm not sure I'm ready to check out the old Showa stuff yet. Have to be in the right mood and mindset.
Either way, both the OVA and GR have great designs and art. Is Texas supposed to resemble Ivan?

Oh, also, I really wanna check out Testujin 28 FX just for the designs alone. I'm worried I might have similar issues with the writing like I did GR, especially since it's a year-long show.

If anything, you probably will have different issues with it BECAUSE it's a year-long show. And also because it tries to take a bite out of G Gundam.

Anyway I thought the show was alright, definitely more dark and less off the walls than the kitchen sink OVA but I can't say I regret watching it.

FX is really really generic. Consider the most standard possible way for anything to play out, be it plot, character, or broad ideas, and it does that most of the time. Can't really call it bad and the designs are neat (and Black Ox is cool), but don't expect anything groundbreaking.

Been a bit since I watched it, but IIRC most of that was woven around where the GRs and their pyramid bases came from and why they might've been built in the first place. Definitely limited and implied rather than strongly hinted at.

Where the fuck do I find a reliable torrent for the whole series? 'Cuz the one I found has people dumping it instantly at 100% and leaving nothing for the rest of us.

I got the feeling that the show was from the get-go designed with the intend to license it overseas but something went severely wrong with that plan.
Hell, they even made an English version of its website back then.

Yeah, not very strongly hinted, but leaves you thinking about it. I get that not everything should be thoroughly explained, but I was hoping for at least a big battle at the end.
