We won. After years of gainaxfags shitting on Tomino, we can finally conclusively say Tomino shits on all those talentless morons.

You make this sound like an Us vs. Them thing when this whole show is entirely codependent upon Tomino's work either way, outside of the two bystander girls used as the face for marketing.

Be honest with yourselves. Anno hasn't made a tolerable show since evangelion and Tsurumaki hasn't made a good show since FLCL season 1. The evangelion rebuilds were an accurate portent of what was to come but you all distracted yourself with memories of when Khara's staff weren't washed up

I'm a Tomino fan, but I like Anno.
Not into this "Tomino vs. Anno" shitposting business. They seem like friends, they both make good shows, Anno did great work with Shin Godzilla (haven't seen his other Shin films, but they seem fine).
I like rebuilds 1-3 even if 4 dropped the ball for me.
And the problem with 4 wasn't that it was a bad movie or unenjoyable to watch, it's fun, it's interesting, it's Eva: it's just that it seems like it was designed to make people mad.

There is a tension that comes from Eva attracting normalfags and non /m/ fans who will overpraise Eva for things Gundam and Tomino did years before.
But if you seperate Eva from its annoying normie fandom, Eva is still a solid show and Anno is a talented director.

I say this as someone who considers Brain Powerd to be somewhere in my top 3 anime.

Gainer and G-Reco were both just as much of an incoherent mess as GQuuuuuX was despite having more episodes to work with. Tomino fanatics are no different than the Gainaxfags they complain about.

This hasn't happened in years, eva is no longer a pillar in the normalfag anime space and newer generations have been poisoned with irony and stupid beliefs.

Hardly, zoomers think it's problematic and don't care about the robots. Besides anime hasn't been the same ever since legal streaming platforms made western anime watching a legitimate experience, why would you go out of your way to find older shows when you can just watch whatever is popular this season or whatever was the biggest show last year? Long gone are the days of recommending old obscure shows or trading dvds.

Yea, King Gainer is pretty straightforward.
G-Reco is also straightforward, it's just very demanding of your attention. But everything is there in the show for the viewer to be able to figure it out and enjoy it.

I like GQuuuuuuX, quite a lot, but it has a lot of quirks Tomino shows don't have.
Like Shuji. Unless somebody can divine what's going on with him through crazy subtext clues we all missed, he's not going to make any more sense the more you pay attention to the show.
And then GQ does weird things like Nyaan becoming the pilot of not-Eva Unit 01 and the show recreating shots and scenes from Eva. I'm still not sure what the point of that was, unless its some kind of meta-commentary on Eva compared to Gundam. Tomino stuff never feels derivative or overly referential like that.

I ended up really liking the QuuuuuuX itself towards the end.

Being able to generate micro-black holes and manipulate them via the shield's i-field generator is really cool for defense and potential warping capability, the beam saber being a continuous loop instead of a large field filled with mega particles allows for easy field manipulation while retaining the same e-pac size for just about anything on-demand, and the suit's integrated psycommu unit secretly being a fragment of unfathomable psychoframe from the Nu, bearing Amuro's soul and caring about its pilot ala ALICE, is relatively refreshing after a number of Gundam series where this is attributed to a hellish state of existence.

The whole suit feels like sort of a Mark-ii of the Turn-A, marrying the mechanical capability of classic mobile suits with the occult metaphysical asceticism of contemporary mobile suits.

Amuro here is happy to be the Endymion, Machu fully recognizes that her true partner isn't Nyaan or Shuji but the QuuuuuuX (and therefore Amuro), and though they parted at the end they promised they'd meet again, since they're partners. It feels like in this mad scramble of timelines, Newtype worship, backstabbing and plots, the wisest and most knowledgeable person is Amuro.

You're right about this. The whole "eva is the anti-gundam, anno hated anime, you didn't get it if you liked it" stuff is pretty much entirely dead in the water. They still like it and watch it but it's slowly returned to "I don't really get it all but it's cool, it's a bit gay (but now that's a good thing!)"

The rebuilds weren't actually bad movies on a technical level, they were bad because Anno wanted to do a little trolling with the 4.0 ending.
The ending is even kind of sweet, if you buy the Shinji is Anno's self insert/Mari is his wife idea.
It's just bad in the context of Eva's own story.

Not him but in my experience Evangelion is lot like Earthbound in that most haven't actually watched/played it and with the minority that have many probably speedwatched it. You would be surprised how many people pretend that watching a youtube "video essay" counts as a watch through.

The problem is more that the Rebuilds are so inconsistent.

1, 2 and 4 are lighter flashier happier Eva, with less characters focus. But then 3 was just shitting on Shinji more than ever, with a much bleaker overall story than anything else, and even 4 had to step back on some elements from 3. It's just clear there was no real direction for the movies after the two first ones, even if you disregard the early promo movies being completely different from the final product.

Then, yeah, you also have 4's ending which tries to be too metaphorical to the point it's not clear how the story is supposed to be ending, although I think this is a comparatively minor issue compared to the series lacking a single coherent vision overall.

>4 wasn't that it was a bad movie or unenjoyable to watch, it's fun, it's interesting
It's god awful and the opposite of interesting. It's entirely up its own ass and had the emotional and intellectual depth of a puddle. It's better than the second movie, though. The entirety of Rebuild is just bastardizing and cribbing off the original Eva in the most uncreative way possible outside the Ramiel visuals (the actual changes to the narrative here were so bad, the little talk between Misato and Gendo where she asks if he can't believe in his son as Shinji is crawling through the burnt wreckage and the triumphant music plays, jesus) and 3.33 is actually all right. Sure, you got retards praising Eva for showing the true horror of a kid, basically a child solider, piloting a giant robot as novel or "deconstructive", but I think Eva is just flat out better than its precursors regardless of the retards it attracts.

I think 0079 is the second best mecha series I've seen, but Tomino's shows vary in quality so much and are often flat out bad.

FLCL being good was quite possibly a fluke at this point. Hard to say since he has been tied with Rebuild for so long and it was a soulless cash grab from the get go.

Asuka getting paired with Kensuke was a troll.
It doesn't bother me, I don't care about Eva shipping, but I don't think they ever talked to each other once on screen, and it was very clearly done to make shippers mad.
