I guess they were so focused on the nostalgia aspect that it hampered them pulling off an alt-timeline.

Everything is basically shown as being the same as the original Gundam up until Char gets in the Gundam. Nothing really explains why tech doesn't look like it does in Zeta/0083; especially when the whole creation of this alt world was just Lalah wanting Char to live. EVERYTHING should have been different if you want the civvies to have tech that is very much established as not existing in that setting before.

It's like if you did a story where WWII ended because Russia got The Bomb first and dropped it on Berlin and then you see American Troops walking around with Nokia Razr flip phones in 1950s.

But again, that would have fucked with the nostalgia angle and we all know how Gundam fans shit themselves over actual modern reinterpretations.
