What went wrong?

How come Duke Fleed gets the shaft every time he appears? We know Koji is the heart and soul of the Mazinger franchise. But you don't see Tetsuya get this kind of treatment.

Him and Tetsuya have the issue of being secondary MC to the main man Kouji in many eyes. To make matters worse for Great and Grendizer fans it takes years for them to get anime remakes of there shows (hell Great still doesn't have one) and often can be left out of SRW if not in the version of Mazinger they are using (happens to Duke a lot but will happen to Tetusya again because Grendizer U doesn't have him in it).

It felt more like season 2 set up, only they didn't do well enough to get a season 2. The Grendizer related ruins on Earth are never explained and the last two episodes had Hell's forces getting Vegan tech and King Vega himself showing up for the last shot, even if it was in the distance rather than a direct cliffhanger with him attacking Earth.

Obviously SRW can use all that, but it feels more like it was stuff they left there for a season 2 they didn't get.

Great's Toei anime wasn't nearly as successful as Z and Grendizer.

Well, Tetsuya's the older brother, you get both more of the warmth you wish you saw more often with Koji and Sayaka, but Tetsuya's already friendly with Shiro and treats him like a brother even before he catches on or finds out about Kenzo. His sorta-understandable jealousy with Koji is something he still overcomes and realizes that Koji still IS his younger brother. His mech has stronger attacks even though it's not as much of a variety, and it's cool that he's a Combat Professional and has more cool actions. Literally just "I think he and Great are really cool".

The V and sharper features are cooler, even though I really love and appreciate Z. The out-of-nowhere lightning attack is really fun, and him starting with the Scramble Dash tempts me to be cocky and say that base Great is stronger and better than base Z. The Great Booster's really cool as well, regardless of its size, as are the kicking upgrades, surely the fact that it has less upgrades means it's so strong already! Both Great and Tetsuya are also really cool in Zero as well, Shin Zero when?

I like Duke too, haven't finished his show because the better subs aren't all out, but it's similar to how or when Superman's really well-written. The notion of an alien outsider genuinely loving the planet and its people to the point where he'd risk his life again and again and even die for them, you feel that warmth very often with Duke, to the point where he sometimes feels like moreso Daisuke to me than Duke.

I love Grendizer because it's more serious and focus on romance and tragedies,, while Z and Great are more childish and lean towards comedy more than serious matters

This is pretty much the only light at the end of the tunnel for me. As a guy who enjoys when SRW goes off the rails with Mazinger & it's related titles, I'm hoping if or when they do use Grendizer U we get a pseudo season 2.

I think the most natural way would be to make the Mycenaea a splinter from Vegan forces that arrived on Earth in ancient times. This way you can still hype up the Vegans as a bigger threat too, since they're the "main forces".

The "filler" justifies the "important" moments when their time comes, and you get and appreciate the ongoing history that leads to whatever thing happened to be on- wait a minute, sorry, you're not actually skipping episodes. Why are you doing this? No, dude, the anticipation is going to be the reward, if you know the so-called "touchstones", the stuff in between is going to feel like filler. SMPs are flimsy in my experience, though I guess it depends on the kit. My brother got the King J-Der one and it looked pretty huge and durable. My SMP Xabungle, on the other hand, feels very loose and floppy, though I guess Xabungle is one of the oldest SMPs
I also picked up SMP Dendoh, and strangely, while the extra data weapon animal figures feel very solid, Dendoh itself is about as floppy as Xabungle

There's nothing wrong with having a backlog of things you actually want to watch, I wouldn't call that homework like some others do. But if a show feels like an obligation and continues to feel like it as you're watching it, like how you're literally calling it fucking homework, consider both dropping it and discussing it. Broadly speaking, older shows for SRW are predictable enough that you can pick up what's happening without having watched all of it, either that or they'll tell you. If it's a modern show, either it'll start in the middle and tell you the story, or it'll start at the beginning and show you the story. The bios also tell you everything you need to know about the one-episode characters that somehow forced you to watch their shows. You can bench characters that don't catch your interest and watch their shows whenever or never, and you can bench entire games if the main plot follows a show you don't care about. There's legitimately zero reason to want some checklist for a show that's an obligation. You're spending hours to confirm literally what you either already know or will be told by the game regardless. There's literally no point to this.

Most SRW games aren't translated. It's impossible to learn their deal when all I can see are wingdings. Unless someone translated Alpha 1 and 2, OGs Gaiden and 2nd OGs while I wasn't looking.

I'm having a lot more fun with Grendizer now that it's varied its routine a bit with the Spazers and the showrunners have seemingly learned from the Mazingers to do more with them than the "job out to the MOTW" routine of Sayaka, Boss and Jun. Amusing how these gimmicky backpack starfighters are multiple times more useful than the fembots.

From episode 66 it's a straight shot of important-feeling episodes. Don't like how rushed things get - episode 71 is a huge copout, while Rubina's story is handled so drunkenly that it harms Zuril's cred as much as hers and I've honestly got no idea why she's so popular with Banpresto. They also should've done way more with Gandal than just squeeze all their noteworthy actions into the final episode.
