What is it that makes some compilation movies work while others shit the bed?

Why don't you try and put your thoughts into words instead of asking others for an opinion?

Compilation movies aren't a good substitute for a show. They're more like an extended clip show or recap episode. If you think of them like that it makes more sense why they don't seem coherent most of the time.

That's what the OP is you retard.
Read a book that isn't a comic then go touch grass.

It was a fairly straight forward question. I'm not sure what part of it gives you pause.

>>23367249 (OP)
the big problem is that they just don't have the same wiggle room. Oh it might sound good on paper to just say "cut out the less plot central filler" but when you do that it also throws the pacing. There's a huge difference in not just writing something for movie vs writing something for television but also in the tone and pace it conveys while you watch it. What may seem like filler is actually important for establishing character so it's not as easily removed as it seems. So thats why movies feel break neck when they cut out the buffer.

The 0079 trilogy is very, very long and is able to focus on the essentials, both White Base and Char. They did a good job trimming the fat but keeping the narrative intact. That's not always possible. I will actually maintain the opinion that 3-4 compilation movies could actually make IBO watchable, because that series is fucking GLACIAL for no good reason.

With some exceptions you could make most most anime work as compilations with just a little bit of care, with the exception of tournament gauntlets like G Gundam or Build Fighters.

What are the best Gubdam compilation movies other than 0079? My only experience was Thunderbolt 1, G-Reco 1, and SEED 1 and SEED was the most breakneck one for me.

GReco and Seed Destiny.

It actually isn't good (1 and 2)

The best compilation movies are actually G-Reco, seed destiny and the second and third 00 movies

There is literally nothing wrong with the first 0079 movie, why is that one getting so much flack lately? 2 I get, it's a big awkward mess, but why 1?

Turning a 50 episode show into 2/3 films just cuts too much stuff out. That's why something like Reconguista quintology works, because it's 26 episodes turned into 5 films. Ample enough time for every major plot point to be covered.

I actually just finished watching the television series and headed for the compilation movies next just to see the various differences

I thought it was kind of unusual that GQux used characters that weren't even in the comp movies so prominently since it looks like most people have only seen 0079 that way.

It's not a movie but Memories of Eden is the best thing to come out of AGE. It does fail as a replacement though because it skips over the worst parts of the show by condensing around 15 episodes into about as many minutes so unless you know the plot, you might get a bit lost.

That’s interesting. Funny enough despite the movies being quite long they feel shorter if you’ve already seen the television series, only saw the first so far but there’s several differences I already like, the Luna II segment goes by much quicker as the federation doesn’t apprehend the white base crew although the zaku 1 encounter was unfortunately cut and the whole core fighter docking procedure is completely scrapped which got a little unnecessarily tedious (Probably the result of a common complaint on why couldn’t they just deploy the gundam the way it is). Yeah the toy almost super robot elements are charming but I feel this was a good change to the overall story

Seed Destiny Compilation movies are TERRIBLE

Mobile Suit Gundam is usually considered the first ‘real robot’ show and was made during a time when most robot shows were super robot shows. Since the genre hadn’t really been established at that point there was a lot of carry over from that era in the first gundam show. The compilation movies were effective because it not only trimmed that stuff out but focused it on the themes and tone that made it unique as a real robot show. For other shows that have one cohesive vision that it carries out from start to finish, compilation movies just remove essential parts of the narrative.

The 78 trilogy does a really good job of sticking to White Base, Char, and cutting out stuff like the G-Fighter. It helps that it has some monster-of-the-week elements that it can cut out for a movie. The big moments still hit in the movies, not as hard as the show, mind you, but it does a real good job of making an abridged version of Gundam. You should still watch the series, but this works as a substitute for the most part.

Zeta being...well, more complex. There's a lot more going on in the Gryps Conflict, and it requires more breathing room, like Kamille and Four's relationship. ANT is more of a Cliff Notes version of Zeta.

0079 movies made me think Gundam franchise is boring slogfest until I watched the TV version years later. Now only IBO and everything past it feels like the slogfest.

G-Fighter is incredibly dumb. Guntank in space is dumb. Zakrello is dumb. Soundtrack is kinda bad and don’t fit the more dramatic scenes.

Only the show stretches it to be such a slog then because I have no recollection of that in the movies and it was painful to watch in the show.

Fun fact, that’s because prior to 1999- only the compilation movies had gotten a home release. It wouldn’t be until 20 years after First Gundam aired that the full series would be available to fans.
