Best case is just a more accurate manga translation but even that's not ideal because the manga isn't enough content for a television show. They didn't pad things for the anime for shits and giggles. Also Toei's Girls Band Cry, another full 3d anime was a big recent success in Japan.

SEED Freedom had 3d mecha with some 2d animation for the mecha here and there, and when they did an updated rerelease of the movie they actually REMOVED some of the 2d shots for more 3d. And that's the most successful Gundam movie ever in Japan.
