The Blazar and Gento storyline was fine, it never was the problem. It was Emi's storyline that was horribly executed and dragged the whole show down. All the jarring moments in Gento and Blazar's storyline like Firdran's debut and the ending, are from crossing over with Emi's. Since it's already episode 2, let me be the first to kickstart schizo theories.

My theory is that Omega is some kind of autonomous exterminator android/robot developed by blueggers. This dream came to me when i noticed his transformation looks digitized and is accompanied by techno music. there's other supporting evidence too here such as Omega seemingly already knowing Kaijus on Earth like he's some kind of database and also how his timer is telling him when an appropriate time to use the beam arrives. There's also this aiming shot like a target lock on which may also be the reason why Omega like to "grab" his prey before a fight. There's also the fact that Omega must eat a lot which could be fuel costs. I'd also like to point out in Ultra form, Omega's spine looks very put of place to the rest of his body.

I liked Blazar on paper but it just skipped too much important shit. One thing that always stood out to me is his sword gets a whole episode to introduce the material it's made of, then a whole other episode for the creation of the sword itself.
Then the big final form just gets hand waved into existence in the last leg of an unrelated episode, and we never learn shit about it despite it literally being a unified form with a kaiju.

I'm the anon you replied to, in a semse X is basically everything I want in an Ultra series. Good episodic episodes, memorable crossover episodes (and bonus for them focusing on Max and Nexus which tends to be neglected). Yeah the car mechas are dumb but it' s the first series where they showcase the NewGen special effects (say what you want about NewGen but effects are where they're the strongest). The cast while generic, wasn't bad and at least had something to do. Hell I see Trigger as basically X but bad, in a sense that they have a large attack team and crossover episodes but X did it better than them. And plus some of my favorite X episodes other than crossovers and important stuff are the standalones which are the types that /m78/ would praise like the Kaiju football ep, the commander's daughter ep, and the documentary.

And my most favorite aspect is what you described already, X is the first one where Ultra communicates with host on a regular basis. X really feels like it's a fusion between the Ultra and the human host. Some seasons like Z did this but sideline the Ultra (to the point where Z has generic lines in the Trigger movie)

I don't remember why but I ended up reading production notes of Ultraman Nexus last year and ultimately decided to watch it now, this is my first Ultraman show since prior the only thing I had seen were the SSSS anime trilogy by Hasegawa and a single episode of Blazar. I'm aware that this isn't exactly the best place to start Ultraman since it isn't representative of what Ultraman actually is due to its production issues, basically making it something close to Kamen Rider Hibiki.
Even though I thought the first 2 episodes were kind of shit, from episode 3 onward the show hooked me and I ended up watching up to episode 17 in a single day. The only things I don't like so far is Komon being kind of a dumbass at times, the show reusing Kaiju suits way too much due to budget issues, the sociopathic vice-captain who I started to like since they properly explained why she's the way she is but then suddenly starts stirring Komon to a bad path making me dislike her again and the other male member of the team who hasn't done much relevant comoared to the 2 I just mentioned, Shiori and the commander.

I was wondering a few things about the franchise

Rather than answering, i think it's easier if you answer those questions yourself by watching either Ultraman '66 or Seven to get a sense of the normal "Ultraman Formula". '66 is a short, easy watch but Seven is closer to the "formula".

I'm a newfag to Ultraman, still going through Nexus as my first one but I noticed that after these shows started being standalone with Blazar both sales and reception started going down, is there any behind the scenes explanations behind the drop in quality?
Like is the franchise getting new inexperienced writers or is there some creative differences between the staffs?

I'm probably going to catch up with te released episodes of Omega once I finish Nexus either way, the Kaiju designs this season and the form change gimmick seem cool enough for me to at least give it an open-minded try, plus I've liked some toku that are generally considered flawed before.

I was just mentioning that this general while it doesn't hate the new seasons they see it as average and I was wondering if there was a production reason for that. The "standalone" I mentioned were that from my understanding Blazar to the currently airing Omega don't share any continuity with previous seasons besides the crossovers episodes, kind of how Rider and Sentai do it, I thought that ever since Ginga every mainline season was under a shared continuity using powers of past of Ultraman, but either way it's not like that have anything to do with the quality of these shows.

My question simply is if Blazar to Omega being considered "average" by this general have to do something with production issues. I doubt they can outside a limited series like Black Sun or something, which admittedly would be nice to see them try. The landscape just isn't what it once was. It's why Shin Ultraman was and remains so appealing to me.

I just never was that interested into watching Ultraman before, someone in a Rider thread brought up Nexus, I forgot exactly why it was brought up I think when Zeztz leaks started to surface an anon thought it might be like Nexus or something. This led me to me reading the production notes, while this spoiled that Komon will become Nexus in the end somehow, all the hurdles of its production and how it ended up being more horror-focused as a result interested me. I've already watched every Rider and Sentai season from the 2000s and I wanted something with a similar vibe for a while so I decided to give Nexus a shot even if it isn't representative of what the franchise is at all and it's basically the equivalent of starting Rider with Hibiki.
So far I'm having a lot of fun with the show, and decided to give other shows a try. I don't plan to consume the whole franchise or watch in release order but I've already downloaded Ultra Q to watch that one next, I downloaded in B&W since from what I understood the show was made with that in mind making it the best way to watch the show.

then your understanding of standalone isnt correct either. ginga has directly met with other ultras, this is not standalone. orb especially was in the "main" continuity. X has met with both ultraman, zero, nexus etc. Geed needs no explanation. R/B has ties to Taro throug Tregear, Z needs no explanation. Blazar is the only Ultra that never made contact with other ultras in his own show but is retconned and heavily implied to meet with Arc. Blazar fans cope by saying its an alternate version. Trigger obviously has ties to Tiga but more importantly met with Ribut.

I think the problem here is that youre trying apply rider logic to Ultra with to "standalone" thing. You dont seem to get it, any Ultra that has appeared will appear in the "main" continuity one way or another, especially through UGF. It should also be obvious that no ultra actually is from the same universe or continuity since all of them fight on a "virgin" Earth save for Mebius.

Will do, I'll probably finish the next and Nexus sometime next week. I got to the recap episode of Nexus and then suddenly the director started talking about Next, I paused immediately since I already knew Next was a movie so watching it in the middle of Nexus shouldn't take that much time, was surprised by it being plot relevant since I thought it was one of those non-canon adult remaining movies like the ones for Rider.
