Instead of just giving the number 4 to the audience, Khara added a complex math equation to the title so the viewer has to work hard and really think about it to get the correct, hidden answer of Evangelion 4.0.
Hideaki Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki are, as always, absolute geniuses. When i saw this title and worked out that 3+1=4 i felt incredibly intelligent, and now i can mock the media illiterate who disliked this film, who probably simply failed to notice this due to their lack of insight

tl;dr: they have always been careful to refer to the Rebuild movies as :1.0, :2.0, :3.0 with the leading colon. So it stands to reason that 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 by themselves are the story beats of the original, :1.0, :2.0, :3.0 are the story beats of this repeat iteration, and +1.0 indicates what comes after.
