Fuck it this is now a Gunbuster thread. I don't think any scifi series has ever come as close as Gunbuster has to matching the sheer loneliness of space. Time dilation, outliving your loved ones, and finding yourself in a world that's not yours but you still have to protect it anyway are really harsh punishments, and that's on top of answering the age-old question of "Are we alone in the universe?" with "Yes and no. There ARE aliens out there, but they're a nonsapient intergalactic alien bug swarm that seeks to render humanity extinct. There are no other aliens. It's likely that these bugs killed everything else in the galaxy."

That's how the human leaders rationalized the space monsters' aggression, to put the scale of the conflict into perspective of what they were up against.

There are two possibilities. We are either alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

I don't want to be alone, I want sexy alien girls that are for whatever reason genetically compatible with humans and also have cool giant robots they need me specifically to pilot.

Gunbuster is probably the pinnacle of real robots design. gundam Qubereyx comes very close in second!

Too much greeble. SW/70's Science Fiction ruined the classic aesthetic of science fiction. Gunbuster 1 via old Gainax knew what they were trying to go for and bless 'em for it!

Cathedral of Terra, specifically "5th generation super dreadnought battleship"
but the Kanji used for "super-dreadnaught battleship" can also be read as "Tokyo(Specifically, the 'Tokyo Girl') -style western-dreadnaught-type space battleship"
so its kinda complex i guess

>Be Noriko
>Fly into space with giant robots, they're not flashy or special, but it's what humanity's got and you need to master it to fight back and survive
>During your long voyage Earth builds a better ship for everyone out there, you sacrifice the ship you spent months on and called home
>Earth builds a new ship, even faster and more technologically advanced
>Apparently people with psychic powers started showing up and we now command psychic dolphins and whales
>Also the ship runs on theoretical physics, it has no standard propulsion and flies on pure math
>But despite all this you're still you
>And Earth hasn't replaced you or relieved you of duty, so you're still out there, fighting
>Unsure of where you belong or who still remembers you, but you press on anyway

The Forever War will never see the light of cinema, will it? Pic obviously not related, but damn...
Anonymous No.23396768 [Report]
>>23396751
Yeah, but on the other hand, from Noriko's perspective, the entire series happened in like a few months, meanwhile almost everyone else had to spend decades living in fear of being annihilated by the space monsters and none of them were able to do anything about it like Noriko was

>I don't think any scifi series has ever come as close as Gunbuster to matching the sheer loneliness of space
Now I like Gunbuster more than most but we both know thats not true, while the time dilation is cool, it doesnt dwell on it any meaningfully longer than a random doctor who episode, its mostly extra spicy set dressing that serves to add gravitas to the finale

what are you talking about retard? The concept is the entire source of the drama in episodes 2 and 5 and of course it matters heavily in episode 6 as well as you said

Does anyone know what movie this poster on the right behind Kazumi in Noriko's room in episode 6 is for? She has posters for the War in Space, Space Giant and Message from Space but I don't recognize this particular one

Anonymous No.23397584 [Report] >>23397598 >>23397909
>>23397307
Drama that could be boiled down mostly to J-drama soap opera-isms (will the Captain die before Kazumi can marry him, is Noriko's dad still alive) besides episode 6, and even that one doesnt really care the fully explore what it would entail for Noriko and Kazumi to be flung 10000 years into the future, its mostly a bitter sweet ending
Im just saying that if you really think this is as high as it gets there is some sci-fi out there thats gonna blow your mind, even something as basic as interstellar did more with the concept
