Regrading Alpha 1 for the PS2, are skill points and expert points the same thing? When I checked the Japanese wiki to check it had more in-depth info, I got confused regrading one of pages talking skill points being earned by destroying enough units. And looking over the akurasu flowchart for Alpha 1, I see expert points being earned by doing certain actions.

Skill points seemed important to get secret units/certain events to occur.

Usually its more of an issue of them just not being very present. Like Medius Locus in MX only shows up in like 3 stages with nothing but a few drones as backup, and they run away every time you swat them away so the problem gets ignored until Eldy hijacks all the world-ending bullshit at the last second.

I think there's a couple of basic setups to effectively build up an OG villain to be the final threat, and they've used both of these core ideas several times, is to either have them be a coordinating force between at least a few of the other villains, or have their army show up throughout the game with enough firepower to make everyone on both sides shit bricks until the players' side actually has the means to confront them.
More than a few OG villain factions do both of these.

Of course then it still comes down to actually execution in the character writing and gameplay cause if all you fight for the game is faceless AI no one is gonna give a fuck about a badguy that shows up in the last 1% of the game.

iirc, Mothra has an Singular Point design but it's not nearly as big as you'd expect.

There's a swarm of typical Rodan (but smaller), a larger black Rodan, Kumonga and a bunch of smaller variants (I think one of those was what JJ was attacking in the 2nd PV), a sole Anguirus, although the novel says there was more in Mexico of all places, and a school of Mandas too. Not to mention Salunga (>>23402757) who had SP as its debut.

There is RoboGodzilla/MechaG which was largely used a S2 stinger basically. There's also a ton of cameos in the ending as well. I don't know how anal Toho would be, licensing wise, for them to flesh out some of the unexplored stuff like MechaG, the Black Rodan, Salunga, etc.

It’s like when SRW uses the mass produced Great Mazingers from the Gosaku Ota manga. Terada was a big fan of the Kikaider manga, but he unintentionally pissed off Ishimori Pro due to a twist where the blueprints for Kikaider were based on Metalder, which was build during WW2. Metalder is a bit of a sore spot around those parts, especially since Ishinomori was pushing for a Kikaider revival for years.

Result was that the second game basically dropped any crossover element whatsoever and became Ultraman Gaia The RPG guest starring these other heroes. That made it very unpopular with fans and sold poorly, basically killing the franchise which was meant to go side-by-side with SRW.

I think another problem is getting the actors to actually voice the characters. With Steve they could do it since it's just the Japanese VA, but usually actors are more expensive than VAs. In Alpha 1 and older the Qubeleys are pretty good just by virtue of being Funnel units, the Mk-IIs got a huge nerf going into Alpha Gaiden and never really recovered except for the few games where they get Double Funnel

The Qubeley Mk-II Funnels only have a little less base power than Nu or Sazabi's so once you start hitting Double Move levels you can definitely put them through their paces
Though I only really fell in love with them and the Jagd Doga on my NUR
