Tomino does a lot of things with no actual reason. That’s just the way he, and life, is.

Tomino tried to be progressive in Gundam and received a lot of pushback. Even lost some trusted staff who quit over Tomino's insistence on including Guin, and Bandai's suits refusing to allow Guin to be officially stated as gay and also rejected the more extreme concepts where Guin was flamboyantly gay and trying to groom Loran.
He also thought it was time to bring American involvement into Gundam and got Syd Mead to do the MS designs, only for the Gundam fanbase to torch him over it for years for betraying the spirit of Gundam to the west. Heck, even though now many Japanese have warmed up to the designs, they're still not popular enough to make a regular kit of them. It took the Build series to make some of the designs popular, like May's WaDOM or the Turn Alnus.

Tomino viewed homosexuality as natural and part of what makes humans interesting, and he did not want to cap off the 20th century with a work trapped in society’s superficial idea of human sexuality. Thus, he ordered staff to frame an aspect of the story around Guin’s perceived attraction towards Loran. He actually got into heated arguments with a few staff members who inevitably resigned in protest, yet Tomino remained steadfast and did not allow Turn A Gundam to become shallow. It’s worth noting however that in earlier drafts of the story Guin’s homosexuality is much more pronounced, and there’s even running dialogue of Loran rejecting Guin’s advances but encouraging him to embrace his sexuality. It’s possible that Tomino was forced to tune it down.
