It had a good run. I really liked Saber after Q1, but I haven't continuously enjoyed watching a Rider season live since Build. While I still liked most of the shows that came after Build, they always had an awkward period where I'd lose interest for about a quarter of the series. With Gavv, though, I personally had fun from beginning to end, even during its weaker parts.

This is me with the last 3/4ths of Gavv. The story has very few hooks and it doesn't even deliver on them in exciting or interesting ways. That and the frankly poor pacing have made this show a chore to watch, I'm just waiting to see if the finale has some genuine surprises in store for us or if it will end up being completely mediocre (except for the action scenes, which will probably be good).

We're seemingly getting an arc when the initial main villain Yezz will become a heroic rider at the start of the second arc. Plus Takahashi generally mostly does serialized stories, even outside of Rider.

Drive definitely was heavily episodic for the first half. There were subplot, but the episodic plots dominated. Then the focus reversed in the 2nd half.

Saber had some done in ones and two parters in the 1st quarter then the 2nd quarter had bigger focus on two parters, but by late into the 2nd quarter it's already going full plot focused and doesn't really stop.

Gavv definitely stayed episodic all the way through just with plot on the sides, which, if they don't dump the 2 parter structure at some point seems like the most likely structure for Zeztz based on this rumor/leak.

I credit it to the directing because script-wite nothing acknowledges that extra Shouma being left alone, and action scenes are mostly down to the episode director. Unless new info comes up, that seems the most likely possibility.

That said, this isn't an aspect that is really getting questioned over in Japan, with general public expecting Dark Shouma or something (although there are some hardcore fans who had the same thought about that Shouma surviving), so even if it we do get more behind the scenes interviews it's unlikely it will be adressed since it's not a real point of contention/confusion that's brought up with any emphasis over there.

The story is the writer's main responsibility, yeah they're subject to the producer's whims but the producer isn't the one actually writing the scripts, it's the writer who does that (on top of other things like contributing to the basic outline of the story and characters, as well as being involved in the casting). So it's completely fair to blame the writer for the show's writing (story and dialogue included), even if the producer shares some of that blame too as the overseer of the whole project.

You can't excuse everything Takahashi does on his producers, especially when he's worked with a different one every single time he's done a Rider show and yet people can still identify his preferred tropes.

It was good, the action scenes were pretty good, Shouma's acting was better than usual and Sachika keeps being a solid Heroine even if she's a bit dumb. But just like nearly every episode since Q1 ended, there's some things that prevented it from being truly great, like Shouma having to learn the same lesson over and over again (not to mention the potential forced drama with Hanto next week as a result of his shenanigans), Nyelv has been pretty disappointing so far despite all the set-up they've done with him, and Lango (who is potentially the last boss) still isn't doing much yet as him helping the heroes out was pretty much just a coincidence rather than one of the key steps of his big revenge plan to take Stomach Inc. back.

It's less learning the same lesson and more that he's built up this flaw where he has to tough it now because great power comes with great responsibility. Remember how he acted towards Dente's death? It's come to bite him in the ass because he's come to believe his own happiness absolutely should not come before everyone elses when it's him that's linking them to tragedy. Shouma's a good boy and he's trying his best to live up to it but he's still going to need people to remind him that the feelings he was towards his new home don't go one way.

Caking returned in a big way in the 40s too. Previously it only got used once after Sorbet's debut, in episode 28, and was never used in the 30s. So, this might actually be the response time they have now for audience response from early show stuff.

He's not fighting Bocca with Caking though, not even Over/Master can scratch him so what is Caking even going to do against the most powerful individual in the setting?

Sorbet is officially stronger and more powerful. Caking should be the last resort form because it's the weakest upgrade and also the one with the riskiest drawback, once it fights for too long or it gets beaten Shouma cannot keep fighting in his transformed state anymore.

Your headcanon makes no sense, it's more logical to think Caking sees more use simply because the staff and the audience like it, because in-universe it's the upgrade he should avoid using the most.
