Macross / Macross Frontier
I just finished Macross Frontier, it was my first Macross, and I want to know what /m/ anons think of it and of the Macross series in general.
It was a fun ride. Was kind of taken aback by the pop singer/pop idol focus, but it managed to win me over with the fun of what it was doing.

Have some complaints and kind of need to vent, but I want to get the discussion started
What do people think of this series?

Frontier isn't my favorite Macross 7 is my favorite entry but I really think it's probably the best "modern" Macross we could ever possibly see.
Frontier and the original show are obviously pretty different, but I think Frontier is still reminiscent enough of the original show, and it just dials all of that up to 11, so it really feels like a big huge celebration of Macross to me. Shame that the movies are nowhere near as good as the show though.
Delta unfortunately goes too far out of control and is just terrible. I'm not even one of those autists who seethes at the idol stuff, the problem is just that all the idol stuff in Delta is fucking boring and everybody except for Ranka, Mirage, and Hayate are totally uninteresting. I don't even think those three are particularly good either (except for Mirage's big fat ass) but at least they feel like human beings with life in them. Also most of the music in Delta is shit.
Clearly they could have made a show that didn't suck though since Zettai Live is so good; actually exciting plot, great action, and the Yami-Q-Ray songs are some of my favorite Macross songs.

Hahahaha oh man
This is funny
So I feel like my approach to Anime in general started kind of detached from traditional fandoms and fandom cultures.
I knew memes like "best girl/worst girl", I knew about the Asuka vs. Rei debates, but because of the way I approached anime I never *really* participated in any of that culture. Even only until recently, like in the past 6 years, have I started watching seasonal stuff and actively participating in current discussions, and even then I don't tend to feel strongly about characters. If I do I usually focus on characters I strongly like.
So I feel like my approach to anime has been kind of detached. I've accepted most of the stuff I stuck with and watched without feeling very passionate *dislike* about any characters.

Ranka might be the first character to pull visceral and irrational dislike out of me. I cannot explain why: something about her character design drives me up the wall.
Might also be overuse of Aimo in the story - felt like there were at least 5 climactic moments in episodes where Ranka singing Aimo was the crux, and that might contribute to my problem with her.
It's a strange feeling, because I didn't start hating her until about halfway, maybe a little more than halfway into the season. And I can't put my finger on exactly why.
Maybe just "not my type of girl" but I've never come across a character so "not my type" before.
Could get more into this it's just funny that these are the first posts

So is the rest of the Macross series this kind of thing, the singer/performer stories juxtaposed with the mecha?
And where should I start if I wanted to really get into the series (if not just release order)

For all intents and purposes, yes.
>And where should I start if I wanted to really get into the series (if not just release order)
Definitely just go back and watch the original show (and Do You Remember Love?), go in release order from there unless something really strikes your fancy.
>Original Show
If you liked Frontier, and are a true /m/an, you will like it. The show is ugly as fucking sin but I think it still genuinely holds up and is a great watch.
>DYRL?
"Reimagining" of the original show, one of the greatest films ever made. Simple enough.
>Macross Plus
Macross for people who don't like Macross. It's still fantastic mind you, but if all the idol business rubs you the wrong way then this is the entry for you. There's the OVAs and a movie, basically the same story, only major difference is the ending. Watch the OVA first, save the movie for a rewatch.
>Macross 7
One of the best anime ever made. It's a love it or hate it show though, get ready to listen to his song.
>Macross Zero
Shitty Star Wars Prequel lore additions aside, it's fine, quick watch and the 3D in it is stellar.
>Macross Delta
Sucks, if you're really pressed for time just watch the recap movie+Zettai Live

Ok I've got to get this off my chest

Ranka Lee is the first character in over a decade of watching anime who has viscerally bothered me and who I would go as far as to call WORST GIRL in her show
It's hard to pinpoint exactly why, I think it might just be irrational hatred!!
but here are some sticking points
>she's meant to be a plain or average girl next to Sheryl
I can accept this as a story concept, Ranka is an underdog, but I think I have a hard time swallowing the girl-next-door thing when she's also an amnesiac with a mysterious connection to the Vajra. Plain Jane underdog in the pop music world and "mysterious chosen one" of the Vajra refuse to gel in my brain. You're one or the other sister!
>she's meant to be a plain or average girl next to Sheryl
Ok and this ALSO bothers me because of the brutal reality that being a pop idol is like the one career where you simply cannot merely be a Plain Jane.
The whole thing also highlights the issue of Anime as a lie, which I am usually able to accept and enjoy - it's telling a story about an average looking girl, or at least a girl who doesn't have the same kind of overwhelming presence as Sheryl, except Ranka isn't an average girl, she's an idealized cartoon of an average girl - so it's not the story of a real girl making it in the pop world, it's the story of an idealized anime conception of a Plain Jane girl, who is necessarily cleaner, more designed, and "flawless" than even the most attractive women in real life - she's a FAKE!!!
>creepy/cute Vajra pet thing
>overuse of her songs, esp Aimo
Saw her singing at the Vajra at least 5 times in the course of the show; felt like something you do twice
>intestinal problems
They explain this in the last episode, but I think I saw it coming, or felt it coming
Ranka is connected to the Vajra by her V-type infection intestinal bacteria
It was about halfway through the show I started hating her, and it might have been because of that - the sense that she's somehow infested

I think on some level it is just irrational
But it got to a point where I was viscerally cringing at a few times when she was on screen. There's that one shot of her smiling with her fang tooth that you could tell the showrunners thought was really cute: it was like a jumpscare!
I feel a little bad for disliking her because the whole point of her character is the underdog contrast to Sheryl, so it's like I'm irrationally hating on the underdog, but again I feel I could accept that "underdog pop singer" story on its own, if it weren't tied to Ranka being a chosen one.

It's funny to me how much she bothers me xP

Its a great series, although most of the entries are substantially different than each other, which is a good thing when most new anime is just chasing the latest isekai or shonen slop trend. For the rest of the series you just need to try them.
If you especially like the Valkyrie fights, then try Zero or Plus. If you want more music then try 7 or if you are brain dead Delta. If you want a mix or everything watch the original.
Its also worth noting that unlike Gundam it is worth watching both the series and the movies for most of the series. The movies have much larger budgets and different plots than the series.

I've finished Macross Frontier recently too. Currently halfway through Delta.

I think Frontier was pretty damn good. probably my favorite, or at least the one that makes me think about it constantly after I finished it. But I feel it was too short to properly flesh everything out, and the villains were weak. I'm even more baffled by the changes the movies made, and if it wasn't for pushing Sheryl more, I'd downright probably dislike them alot more.

Better argument to make is how Macross 7 decided to push music as a more deliberate force in the world, which trickled down to other entries later on. Sound Force existing, is what led to the other entries massive focus on music affecting the enemy. It's like how they can't not have a love triangle now. It's too ingrained in peoples thoughts of the series.

DYRL placed a bit more emphasis on it than the TV show. Then 7 and plus codified music playing a big part (especially 7). Heck I'd argue 7 took it and ran away with it.
And so Frontier and Delta are just the result of that.
7 was basically a series flanderization already which Delta and Frontier built upon.
Anonymous No.23420025

Yeah, but SDF was because of reigniting 'culture' in the alien races that lost it in their everlasting war. I get it was music that ended it, but it wasn't ALL music. It was also the reintegration of romance, sex, entertainment as well as the reclamation of humanities normalcy AND the bonds formed between them (literally in the case of Max and Milia).

Macross 7 being all about Basara's music working against the enemy and UNS/NUNS running with that in later entries coincides with how strong idol culture is and how pushed it's become. I'm honestly surprised there's not been a current darker take on the idols of Macross paralleling darker takes on idols, such as the inability to have relationships or the control over their lives (disregarding that one bit in 7 Dynamite of Mylene getting assaulted)

I felt that Ranka was given less in the movies and Alto just kinda existed as the male part of the triangle. Not like he was thoroughly explored enough in the series, but boiling down his reasons to being scared of his acting taking over him and that being the last we hear other than the occasional nod about taking over the stage of fighting instead. And whilst I enjoy them doing more with Sheryl, it felt more bloated than the tv show with the spy angle and everything.

Alot of the sub character drama helped Frontiers cast. I think the changes to Michel were for the most part worthless outside of giving him a happy ending (sucks that Klan kinda just exists there, does nothing). I think the reduction in some characters by changing relationships was also dumb. I think Brera got character assassinated with what they did to him. Even something as minor as the president turning from a fine politician into I think 2 lines of dialogue and seemingly a power hungry opportunist.

Honestly, at points I felt that Frontier TV wasn't long enough to detail the world they were in. I do appreciate Alto being more of a person as well rather than angst. The final fight in the movie was pretty awesome as well. I need to find a quality download of the Macross Quarter surfing just to look at every so often.

With Ranka in the tv series a lot of her issues and conflicts stem from the fact that she's immature. When you remove the immaturity you lose a lot of her conflict, and without it her story didn't have much going for it. Tv series very much created her own problems.

With Alto him being afraid of his acting taking over who he is a his issue in the tv series as well. He does still like to perform he's just a fan of acting anymore. (And honestly knowing the roles he played, I don't blame him, the novels go into it too-- and I kinda wish we got Alto's perspective because he's brutally honest). The only thing missing in the movies is the emphasis on his genuine desire to be a pilot.

With Sheryl I think it was simply just a what if based on the drama cd track about Sheryl and Grace.

Frontier TV series had a lot of canon side material to explain things

There was a mission in UX where you have to save Ranka from a vajra (it's from the first movie where alto slashed through the vajra's stomach to save her). The objective is to reduce the vajra's hp to under 10%, however the NPC AI is dumb and if you accidentally summon tobikage, it'll kill ranka and you have to restart the stage.

It's just more hayate-freyja romance and an actual conclusion to the story since the tv series had none.

I get that the hivemind keikaku was to lure the Vajra to Frontier, decode Vajra communication, put implants in the grunts, and then take direct control of the queen with Battle Galaxy and conquer the galaxy.

Sheryl was in on luring the Vajra to Frontier because she thought Frontier were assholes who were somehow cheating in the race to get to the Vajra planet, and she was deliberately singing to lure the Vajra to Frontier... but then she seems surprised when the Vajra show up during her concerts? Ranka always attempted arguably more important things than Sheryl, especially when it came to the Vajra, but she never really tried to win Alto from Sheryl until near the end, especially after the deal with Sheryl's illness that drove it home harder for Alto, and with Ranka leaving it's interesting they even kept up the triangle in the epilogue.

I do too.
From the way people talk about them I get the feeling that a lot of the overall community attitude towards the two shows was influenced by the context of their release. To me, Frontier struck me as playing the hits way too much and cranking up the elements that I found most grating, particularly the godawful love triangle that it doesn't even resolve (I know there's movies shut up). It still had some great stuff and being lower down my Macross rankings is still pretty goddamn high in the grand scheme of things.
Delta had way more of its own identity, is the main thing. The parts I liked weren't struggling to get out from under the weight of being an anniversary show also trying to pay tribute to everything before.
Hayate's great as a lead, he pretty much directly solves a lot of why Alto rubbed me the wrong way and his relationship with Freyja is really well written. They've got a very natural dynamic going on and enough emotional intelligence to navigate it. I love when they find out about Hayate's father and what could so easily become a stupid separation arc is immediately nipped in the bud. Freyja's also great, love her gremlin energy.
Mirage gets a little shafted, but on the whole I think I prefer her having a one-sided crush to scream into a pillow about than the need for a love triangle getting in the way of something that really worked. It's also kind of wild how her entire character arc is about getting out of the shadow of her grandparents and accepting that she's doing damn good on her own merits, and real fans still give her shit for not measuring up to the expectations brought on by her surname.
Exploring the ramifications of NUNS expansion and making friends no matter what was a great angle, too. Wasn't handled perfectly but it was an evolution beyond yet again finding more ayys to fail to stop for a season until we try singing at them.

(2/2 I had more to say here than I expected)
They could've done more with it but I also really liked the super-produced idol group pop against an extremely traditionalist civilisation. You get hints of it but it's a good angle. The very first song we hear from Walkurie after their introduction track and the one that Freyja joins in with is fairly directly sexual and at the end it's basically the power of horny teens that breaks through and saves the day, that plus a few other allusions makes me think it was intentional and just underused.
The music style also feels like a callback all the way to DYRL, and the idea that the title song is just a piece of throwaway pop from eons past that still speaks to something meaningful and true about lived experience. That's something I always really liked and don't think gets talked about enough, that the power of culture was never restrained to just meaningful high art or masterpieces. There's power in any art that speaks to people.
I think there's also some commentary going on in the fact that the only member of Walkurie not given some kind of allusion to or actual romantic relationship is the literal test tube baby perfect idol, the three year old that's tied with if not ahead of Makina for most regularly sexualised. It might not be intentional, but that always struck me as a bit of a swipe at real world idol culture.

Because the stupid creators of Frontier drew the series ending in such a way that it is quite suitable for a threesome.

The Frontier movies are crap, and the authors' attempts to deny the threesome nature of the ending are just verbal garbage (like how the writers/directors were blabbering that Lelouch definitely died, but then he suddenly survived and they started mumbling about parallel worlds and other bullshit).

In the end, there is always the Alto Harem headcanon, which I also adhere to, and "the author's opinion is dead" and has no meaning unless it is clearly and unambiguously expressed in the work itself.

So yes, there are Frontier fans who, based on the series' ending, which is quite conducive to a threesome, made a well-founded conclusion that Alto chose both - after all, they are both his wings (Saotome himself said this in the series, and the director can go to hell with his interpretation).

Ranka was never a real contender and I don't think the show ever treats her as one honestly. Alto treated her like a little sister from beginning to end. The closest thing Ranka gets to an actual romantic moment with Alto is her singing to him in the hospital, and even then Sheryl is there doing the same thing. Every romantic scene was either pure Sheryl or Ranka getting cucked. Alto and Sheryl literally date in the show, are implied to have had sex and Alto tells Sheryl he'll stay with her forever on at least two occasions. People wanted to take Ranka's inability to move on as Alto being open to her; which is never suggested by the show.

Also is an interesting character once you realized what his real deal is.

Alto decided that he wanted to become a pilot however because he was initially rejected by Ozma who thought that he was being dishonest so he decided to use Ranka as an excuse to join the army which Ozma accepted not realizing that Alto was honest the first time around and dishonest when he claimed that he wanted to protect Ranka (to be fair to Ozma though Alto is a complete tsundere when it comes to Frontier). But due to that Alto created a knight role whose purpose was to protect Ranka whom he was using as a stand in for his Frontier but as shown time and time again he's actually quite shit at protecting Ranka as she's not his first priority. This is shown in how Alto consistently puts others before Ranka. He struggles to play the role of her protector and he knows it and those who know him know it as well.

As for his father it's actually in the past. He told his father that he didn't want to inherit the kabuki theater and his father was okay with that but Alto's brother wasn't. Alto left his home and became self sufficient while pursuing a career in aviation as agreed with his father and he stated that he wouldn't return until he was a pilot. Even though to is a pilot the whole thing with Ranka makes him feel like he really isn't one. Hence why Alto's brother says that Alto is playing a role that he's failing at.

It is only after Alto accepts the fact that Ranka isn't a priority in his life and that he actually loves his home and became a pilot to protect it and now also Sheryl whom he loves that he feels like he's become a real pilot.

It's actually confirmed that what Ranka fell in love with wasn't Alto himself but rather the role that he was playing. Alto knew that neither of their feelings were genuine that's why he never really looked at Ranka as a romantic option.

I think that the tv series has its own issues. For how well it handled everything else the main conflict wasn't resolved in a satisfying way.

I think that it in part has a lot to do with the fact that the only character that is there to resolve it is tv series Ranka but she was too immature for that plot. So they had to use Sheryl to better explain the Galaxy's plot, and altered Ranka so that she could explain the whole deal behind the Vajra. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

She's got a crush on Hayate but it's incredibly clear from day one that he's down bad for that middle age Windermerean pussy and she in turn is cradle-robbing humans.
Which to be clear, I prefer. I like that there's a clear romance angle with one and an unrequired crush to angst over with the other, because it lets us focus on where things are actually going versus just trying to keep things in the air as long as possible.

What she "knew all along was that he loves her and Alto is willing to kill Ranka who he sees as his younger sister to protect his home and the woman he loves. Similarly that is what Klan means by what she says that "that is your love".
The "you are my wings" isn't romantic, and in the last Sheryl was humoring Ranka neither he l her nor Alto took Ranka's feelings for Alto seriously.

>Sheryl was humoring Ranka
Amazing imagination you have. You also skipped the scene were Sheryl doesn't want to know Alto's feelings because she won't be able to sing. She still doesn't know by the end and neither does Ranka.

She canonically did at the time she didn't want Alto to say anything because it would show up on her voice in any way. She wanted to save Ranka so she didn't want anything including the joy of being chosen over Ranka to interfere with that which it would have. Hence why when she was dying she never mentioned anything about their love triangle she was just upset about dying. Sheryl knew that that fight was going to be her last that's why she didn't want Alto to confess to her. Also just a reminder Sheryl and Alto became an official couple in episode 22. This isn't even a real debate your interpretation it's canonically wrong.

Just pointing this out but canonically Sheryl and Alto fucked in episode 22 and Ranka heard the whole thing. So Ranka is a cuckquean.

I'd recommend rewatching the full series, there's a lot of context that you won't understand in the first watch that you'll get in the second, especially after seeing the movies. Like for instance Galaxy is space Paris, and Sheryl is part Polynesian and part french.

It feels like we've unearthed a relic of a distant past shipping war here. Time to build transforming planes in case the people that shipped it come back, I suppose.
