I use the patented 3-cut into glass file true combo.

Use nippers to cut piece from the runner far from the gates.
Cut off all but a little bit of the remaining gate with nippers.
Shave off the remainder of the gate using a hobby knife.
File down surface with a glass file.

I want to do an MG. I think I'm ready. I have only done HGs and and 30MM kits to date, but wanna start going into higher grades. What is a good first MG? My local hobby store has a bunch of MG God Gundams, but that's an older kit that might not be the most newbie-friendly even though I am a G Gundam fan.

The mg god gundam isn’t very good. It’s pretty old, for your first mg you’re gonna want something that’s come out within the last 10-15 years for the best build experience. Most of the ver kas and 2.0s are really good. The mg 00 line, the more recent mg seed stuff, origin gundam, and barbatos are good too.

Please get a newer MG and not an older one. The MG God Gundam came out in 2001. You're going to miss out on so many of the advancements that have been made since then. Just get anything relatively modern that you like the look of.

I leave a bit of the nub behind then file it down flat with a glass file. If you're not painting, it's the best finish you'll be able to get without having to waste a bunch of time progressively sanding with higher grits.

Anon, the mustard gold injection is what kills the plastic. Vapor plating is actually more healthy for the kits since they don't have to care what the plastic below looks like, thus no injection.

Griefen has been equipped with a walking walking exoskeleton to handle the recoil of a customized handheld howitzer. She is also equipped with the standard tool for digging trenches. She is specialized in direct rear support via long range bombardments and fortification of lines. The spade decals denote her role in entrenching soldiers to hold ground. The exoskeleton is also great for picking up babes in her free time.

The Unification Defence Force's workhorse Kuster Mech chassis long range missile variant, the Archimedes variant is intended as a standoff platform. Carrying a pair of 5-shot "Javelin" Artillery Missile Systems, as well as a brace of back-mounted "Iscariot" Short Range Multi Role Ballistic Missiles, the Archimedes platform is able to engage targets at a range of 50 - 200 miles from the relative safety of its own rear lines, although direct fire targeting systems for the Javelins are included for a worst case scenario. The Mechs only other armament is a 5" mortar that is typically used to launch rocket-assisted drone carrier shells. These shells are a hollow shell that fall away at a preset distance to deploy the targeting/spotter drone inside.

Although the Archimedes variant is as heavily armoured as other Kuster chassis, and sports an impressive EM suite, it is vulnerable up close as its lack of secondary weapons or proper arms mean it cannot defend itself. Shown is Red 1 "Kinky Tina", from an unknown unit around the Swarbian Delta.

The Hyper Fighting platform, Penetrator G, was built by MSG Valiant Force to effectively engage in combat no matter the range or terrain utilising a mysterious lost technology, the Life Generator. Her Hyper AI allows for Governor-less operation, and feeds back directly to VF HQ. Despite Valiant Force Command's wishes, she believes herself to be a "Real Super Robot!", fighting to "Protect this Beautiful Earth!" She is blissfully unaware of MSG Valiant Force's true goals to subjugate mankind.

The Tactical Sword mounted to her bracer can be launched with her "Penetrate Crash!" attack, while the Life Generator in her chest powers her incredible "Breast Bunker!" long range missiles.

For when she needs even more firepower, her secret weapon, the "Bulk-Leg Buster Cannon!" can be deployed. A customized Woodpecker has been build to deliver this weapon to her, and a brave member of her maintenance team has been trained to fly it through enemy lines, against his wishes.

Once deployed, Penetrator G must "Cast Off!" her Tactical Sword and Breast Bunkers to generate the proper power load, and interface directly with the cannon via her arm and cable linking to her Life Generator.

A modified Zaku II, used for backline support while sieging enemy fortifications in a desert setting. Skirting has been replaced with enhanced cooling, missiles and rockets mounted to the legs and arms, and a shoulder mounted bazooka. The legs have been equipped with deployable skids to for improved stability on sandy terrain and to absorb recoil of the bazooka.

XM-X0 Crossbone Gundam X-0 Full Cloth [Plan A] The original 3rd unit of SNRI's F97 series, the Ghost. Like its siblings, it was developed to operate around Jupiter. Assembled after the X-1 and X-2 in U.C.0132, it did not reach the Crossbone Vanguard's flagship, the Mother Vanguard, as its transport ship was destroyed in an unknown accident. The [Plan A] was the original planned specs for the final operation to destroy the Angel Call and lieutenant general Kizo's forces. It was equipped with the [Ikazuchi], an orbital artillery cannon modified from the confiscated Phantom's nuclear shot lance. The launcher was a railgun with a Minovsky craft system equipped in the sensors to "clear" the shot from Minovsky interference moments before it was shot, and the ammunition was modified from a confiscated Divinidad's nuclear warheads. These warheads would separate into 2 blocks before arriving the target area. Each block would generate an I-field, containing the explosion for long enough to incinerate the Angel Call inside the radius. The idea was to shoot the warheads from outside the combat range of lieutenant general Kizo's forces, but the plan was rejected because of an objection by the unit's pilot, that cited 2 points: 1 - If the projectiles miss or are destroyed, they are going to be too far to intercept Kizo's forces 2 - "You guys are too cruel, making a blind man aim a gun from this far away"

An experimental suit planned in secret by Axis and Anaheim, the oversized Mortarleg design was a dedicated planetary ground attack suit. Armed with 60 long range missiles, twin 90mm gatling cannon in a torso mount and of course a 2000mm mortar built into the right knee. The backpack could hold ten 2000mm bombs for the mortar. Dependant on frequent resupply for extended missions, the Mortarleg was still a frightening sight on the battlefield. A strange quirk of it's pre-colored light green ceramic armor was its inablity to retain paint for any length of time.

Doomed to extermination, a country greenlit the deployment of an anomalous AI and integrated it to their last remaining Eclectic Vanguard unit, foregoing all ethics and safety measures in this final act of spite. Smuggled deep into the heart of the enemy's megalopolis, Noroi embodies the vengeance of its massacred creators. A global threat anywhere else, in the city it is but a lone antibody within an ever growing tumor, its crusade contained and turned into entertainment by the corporate authorities. Steered from low impact operations to the occasional ambush, sometimes even used as punishment against underperforming facilities, its disruption efforts can't seem to escape the script written for the apathetic viewers' amusement. Or so is everyone led to believe...

Love the Battletech inspirations

Piloted by the leader of the Drake Pirates, Captain Benjamin Drake, the Blackbeard Hugo is a high-performance machine outfitted with weaponry salvaged from Calamity War era wrecks. Pirates view such treasures as obscenely valuable, and battles over them can be fierce. To that end, this variant of the IPP-66305 carries two pairs of sub-arms. The first pair holds the Highway Powered Missile Launcher, while the second wields the Brigand Powered Gatling. The Hugo's Shot Anchor Claws have been relocated to a second pair of sub-arms, for greater flexibility in combat. In addition, the Hugo's Head Missile's have been replaced with nanolaminate chaff emitters, for quick getaways. At his crew's insistence, the captain fights from the edge of the battlefield, gradually picking off enemies weakened by the vanguard of the Drake Pirates. With their superior teamwork, the group has carved a name for themselves amongst the pirates of the Mars Sphere.

Inspired by the Spartan Laser for the gun section, the Laser Revolver Zaku's fuel cell carrier has a revolving cylinder through the middle and a pair of Zeon-inspired antennas.The Zaku and it's weapon have a desert-themed paint job with lots of weathering applied.

The O Xamel Cannon contains a kitbashed + repainted Xamel cannon from a Robot Damashii Zaku Gunner, a scratch built head to resemble that of a Xamel, customized metal spike shoulders, and various bits from scale armor kits.

The cursed YMS-16M Xamel unit found in the depths of Africa. Any person that comes in contact with it becomes violently ill within 24 hours. After 7 days of pure agony and sickness, the victim finally dies.

There's three main types
AB1/2, AB4/5, and AB6/7/8
The first styles use hex + square attachment for a form of square tiling using hexes, they are the most stable. AB1 is for larger kits, 2 for smaller.

AB4/5 still uses hexes but ditch the square attachment and are designed to interlink as a proper hexboard. They use a self-supporting design and are generally pretty great for all but the heavier MGs. 4 is for larger, 5 for smaller.

AB6/7/8 use rectangle bases. 6/7 just use friction locks and are only good for light things/ 8 uses plastic "bolts" and is a decent larger stand for lighter things, but it's not really not very secure and I wouldn't put a lot of MGs on it.

also anecdotally the AB6/7 are kinda shit. I bought them when they first came out so maybe they're making them better now, but the pegs to attach to the model and stand have a tendency to snap - not the peg part but the cylinder to attach to the main body of the stand. It's happened to like 3 of mine. I just glued them in place and it's not the end of the world but it's been annoying and consistent. Haven't had any issues with my 8 but I just don't trust the thing to hold up more than my big HGs.

I can understand and even agree with that but I will also point out that due to the scale of basically half the kits involved, placing a single normal sized missile or cannon of even (comparatively) insignificant size to the MS is pretty much artillery. Personally as battletech is concerned it's the difference between something shooting at you in a playspace vs something that could shoot you from off the map. The difference between an LRM is that an LRM hits out to 20~40 (if Extended LRM) hexes on a map while the actual artillery long tom hits out to 20-30 ENTIRE maps. The Arrow IV is also measured in a handful of maps instead of grids. That's the difference of Artillery.
