No that's Cosmic Era. Wing is 10/10 stuff but I don't put it in the top ten in the franchise overall, especially in the last year we had Seed Kino, Requiem For Vengeance, and G-Quacks Gunduck, all having 10/10s since Build Divers and the first half of Re:Rise. Being a Gundam entry and getting at least an 8/10 or higher is pretty standard.

I can respect a lot of people considering SEED to be the best AU. It has the following, sales, and numbers to back it up. With how ridiculously popular was and still is in Japan its hard to deny.

It amazes me how the generations with the most heavily damaged attention spans (Y and Z) flock to Wing in spite of the fact that it is the most boring piece of shit of an AU with not a single original concept and moves at a glacial pace in the middle half. Wing has it's moments. It's first 10 episodes manages to be more engaging and entertaining and thought provoking than the entirety of 00 S1. Some of the shannanigans that happen between then and the ending arc are pretty fun but it does get a little to melodramatic and loses focus a bit, so I don't blame people who say they can't remember what happened. The point of the in between section of Wing is literally to be a clusterfuck until the final arc where the clusterfuck reaches its peak and we can finally get a coherent message and ending with Treize trying to create a conflict to end the series of conflicts. 00's reasoning for everyone linking arms together and singing kumbaya is childish and retarded. Everyone in the world really needed to link up to kill 5 assholes in a spaceship? Whereas Wing has a much more mature and thoughtful resolution where everyone can finally agree on peace and cooperation after an escalating global and space conflict that comes to a head with everyone finally having a moment of clarity through the violence to call for peace together

It's definitely a soap opera with Gundam veneer, but I think it really works. Everyone beyond the alliance military old guard and the few rebel leaders we've seen are very young or literal children, and people like zechs and treize are actual aristocrats in a world where royalty still exists, so their honor driven worldview and grandiose ideologies seem more grounded. Finally seen the wing movie, couldn't force myself into it for over a month. It felt a bit unnecessary as a sequel. The bits about the past and how operation meteor was supposed to go were nice but it was awkward to explore this in a sequel and not the show. The animation was good but I didn't like the fights much, dogshit directing I guess? and the wings were retarded.

Anyway since the thread I was posting with died before I finished the show - as for the OG, people were right about the pacing - it was okay up until nearly EP 30 or so, but then it fucking DRAGS so bad. It did feel necessary to have all of it for character development but still.. And the ending somehow still completely lacked impact despite all that dev? Really dropped the ball. I think I had a gripe or two more with the end but I forgot.
At least it was very solid thematically - I've still AU that aired after wing to go through but so far this was a high point of the series (kind of? very unpolished gem vibe and enjoyment was lower [in second half due to pacing] than show's quality, reverse to what g reco was like), felt very 'gundam' thanks to the philosophy/theme stuff.

He talks about the sanctity of soldier's lives and then goes full Hitler on civilians, assigning war criminals like Sally and Une to brutally massacre the colonies to make an example of them. He routinely executes or assassinates pacifists, and extends the war for long periods, and only doesn't kill Relena as a favor to Zechs.
What exactly is his end goal of "make war so disgusting no one wants to start one"? Because he seems to be the one starting the wars and enjoying them, until they get outsourced to AI and he seethes that it's robots mass-murdering civilians instead of real soldiers mass-murdering civilians.

I wanted to like Wing, because I like a lot of its visuals and I think the OP is one of Gundam's finests.
I just recently started it, but so far I'm not liking it all that much. The way the backstory is being revealed is very annoying compared to how Tomino-san does it, a lot so far seems like secrets for the sake of reveals.
Gundam never had hard logistics but this show really pushes it. Why did Trowa get the HeavyArms Gundam when he's the one in the worst position to actually supply it? He's literally living in a Circus. Why not have Duo or Quatre, the ones with actual supply bases, and teams, have it instead. Why not switch the Sandrock and Heavyarms?
The enemy MS designs are also pretty lackluster so far, but I guess they were trying hard to differentiate it from UC.
Relena is hilarious, her design is cute but she's peak female self-insert. Like the type to stand in the middle of warring factions and stopping a conflict solely because the leaders of such factions are madly in love with her but also want to kill her/consume her. But it doesn't bother me all that much. Heero surviving that fall bothered me more (I'm still open to the idea that his body has been altered in some way). I was also expecting more shenanigans with Heero in school, so far him fake-enrolling doesn't make THAT much sense.
To put it simply, I'm not enjoying how things are being revealed to the viewer. None of the characters has really had a grasp on me (Duo would be the closest but is too much of a chump. Heero, the 2nd closest, is an asshole to the other boys and now is acting a fag towards Relena). The enemy MSs are boring. And the strategies implemented are lackluster and asspully.
I still have hope for the series, but I cannot lie that so far I'm disappointed.

It pisses me off that Treize keeps surviving deadly encounters through sheer aura alone

A good chance to test my understanding so far...

1. Mankind built colonies in space and some migrated there.
2. The UN aka Alliance is a totalitarian control freaks which subjugated the Earth through military force, and now they're trying to do the same to the colonies. They're doing this through military assistance of Oz, which is a military division of (((Romfeller Foundation))), a group of (((elites))) who instigated everything for dominance
3. Colonies started getting invaded and oppressed by Alliance/Oz, made and sent 5 Gundams to Earth to destroy Oz's military force
4. Oz military force got too big and started a coup to overthrow Alliance and succeeded. Oz claimed that they dindu nuffin, that everything was the barbaric Alliance's fault and started to subvert Colonies into becoming their god goys. Great, now everyone hates Gundams.
5. Gundams aren't buying that Oz dindu nuffin, so they infiltrated Colonies, trying to get intel, Gundam upgrades and whatever in effort to oppose Oz
6. Oz is trying to subjugate Earth once and for all through 6 gorillion Mobile Dolls aka unmanned AI mech. Some Oz members (Treize faction) opposes the plan because Treize believes that humans must fight and kill with their own hands. OZ INFIGHTING.
7. by Episode 34 where I'm at, we now have multiple opposing factions:
- Romfeller, Oz and their Colony goys: want to subjugate Earth with Mobile Dolls and gain total control of the universe
- Treize Faction: oppose Oz's plan to use Mobile Dolls, I don't know what Treize's actual endgame is
- Sanc Kingdom: nation that preaches total anti-war pacifism, supported by numerous earth nations, our Gundam boys are with this faction
- Zech Faction: only got introduced, but seems to be opposing Oz

There's no invasion or hostile takeover. Before the start of the story, the colonies were already ruled by the Alliance. The Gundams were sent to Earth by the 5 scientists to destroy OZ because they wanted revenge, OZ assassinated a popular politician 20 years before the start of the show who was campaigning for colonist rights who would have made the colonists' lives better if he succeeded.

OZ is the Alliance's own special forces. Romefeller is a rich European men's club. Treize is a member of Romefeller, and plotted with the leaders of Romefeller to take over the world by having OZ betray and overthrow the Alliance from inside, and then after the Alliance dies, OZ officially became Romefeller's private army.

Imagine if the rich Rockefeller family (now you know where the Romefeller name came from) had a relative who commanded the US marines and they convinced that guy to help the family take over the country by overthrowing the US government and rest of the US military. They successfully shatter the government into pieces and now the family wants to deploy drones to occupy and take over all 50 states now that the government is dead, but the guy in charge of the marines is like "fuck no that's pussy shit, let's get real boots on the ground, it ain't a real war unless somebody's bleeding" and the rest of the Rockefeller family is like "oh no fuck that shit" and exile him to the shed in the backyard.

Each Gundam was designed specifically by 1 of the 5 scientists without any contact from the others. Trowa has Heavyarms because that's what the scientist in his colony came up with even if it doesn't fit him that well. There's a lot going on with Operation Meteor that'd be a spoiler to talk about but in the form you see it in the show, Operation Meteor is essentially treated as a suicide mission. Trowa doesn't give a fuck about using up all his ammo ASAP because he's resigned to die right after, Heero believes his mission failed before he even landed and so he tries to destroy the Gundam and kill himself, Wu-Fei was ready to die after he blew up that base and was caught, he calls Noin naive for not shooting him down instantly, etc.

Hating Wing seems contrarian, because the oldfags grew up with it. It was the USA and the West's introduction to Gundam, without it, most people would have never gotten into it.

So it's popularity has a lot to do the feelings of introduction. Into "wow, this world is really cool with all these giant robots and space colonies"... Wing hooks you into the franchise...

So of course everyone under 25 naturally contrarian swings away from it because they had some other introduction (Like SEED, I haven't watched it.)

Then I'll go even further contrarian - Wing really does suck on account of mostly being incomprehensible aura farming, and if anything its "apparent popularity" is actually the albatross that prevented the west from caring about Gundam all the way up until IBO (maybe inclusive of Suletta Splatta) reminded people that we've been doing gory warcrimes since '79. The timing of the 90's Gundam malaise also suggests that even though Wing's own numbers were decent, it may have been the catalyst that started the decline - a la Synder vs Gunn Superman discourse.
Inversely, every region that started with SEED has had a steady and growing Gundam fandom for decades - because SEED's literally 0079 reworked for the mid-00's melodramatic palate. And the even more brutal truth is that one of those regions was Japan itself.

Finally done with Wing + EW

What I like the most about it is that everyone is so casual about using random mech that aren’t their own, like Wing Zero was whored out to almost every character, even some Oz mobs lol. Overall it’s enjoyable but kinda fell off in the last 10 episodes.

Treize sucks. He didn’t do shit and then got himself killed by fucking Wu Fei. His plan was stupid anyway. He wanted start a big ass war so people would get tired and sick of war and lay down their weapon? The war lasted like 1 day lol and the colonists weren’t even involved since it was all mobile dolls. The people barely experienced the war! The only way to do total peace is by having a global ruling class that has the monopoly over military weaponry. I guess this is what they did at the end of EW with the Preventer stuff, so the (((Romefeller))) won in the end. Great.

Other than the conclusion, there are some weird stuff throughout the series
1. Only Shenlong-Altron got a noticeable visual upgrade. Sandrock & Heavyarms got no upgrade and Deathscythe Hell & Wing Zero ARR ROOK SAME.
2. Too many convenient plot armor where important characters just tanked and magically survived close range giant explosion.
3. Logistics don’t make sense for Heero & Trowa. Heero did everything solo without assistance and Trowa was part of a fucking circus. How did they resupply? At least we saw Wu Fei did some arms deals with some military
4. The world feels so small. It’s like everyone always coincidentally encountered each other, even in outer space.

All right it’s time to move on. I’ll watch 00 next and then maybe G-Reco.
No plan to actually finish X & Victory since they’re total dogshit.

War bad, but war still has to be fought with your own hands to keep the sanctity and the honor of it because Treize believes that battle reveals the hearts of men and using Mobile Dolls to subtitute soldiers means it becomes even more of a numbers game than it already is.
For why Treize changed his mind and starts becoming a loser is because as Oz’s greatest general he went all in on these brutal massacres is because for him he believed it was necessary for peace in a sense that “the masses were culled they’d never rise again.” Which did happen, but what he didn’t expect was that Romefeller would still stir shit up even with the tenuous peace which led to his resignation and the Treize faction.
Ultimately it gave him the conclusion that what was needed isn’t subjugation, but having all sides of a war to get so blown the fuck out that the only way to move forward was to stop fighting or risk total extinction.
It’s why he himself had to die in the first place because if didn’t, then other war hawks would want to use his name as a rallying call to start more wars (which was what happened in Endless Waltz) especially when pretty much every war guy at the time died during the final battle of Wing.
