Sunrise really missed a great opportunity to English dub this mofo and have him go "ZOINKS, OLBA"

Correct. It undoubtedly would've been a hit in the US.

Aside from Rustal I can't think of Gundam villains who won as hard as they did.

Cope about how people would watch it expecting Gundam Wing and find out it's a boring retread of a show they haven't seen with some of Okawara's worst designs.

Apparently there was talk about airing After War Gundam X in America (since part of the series takes place there,) but Bandai insisted on Wing and 0079.
https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/After_War_Gundam_X
>After the success of Gundam Wing, the staff who worked on Toonami approached Sunrise for another series, having their eyes on this series (as well as Turn A Gundam), likely due to a combination of factors (similar animation and production staff as Wing, taking place in the United States). However, for whatever reason, Sunrise instead insisted that they start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam. It's widely believed that had X aired after Wing instead of the original MSG, it would've been far more successful, as it was a more recently-animated series by comparison and shared many series and design themes with Wing.
No source attached to this statement, so it might be bunk.

That is an interest 'what if?', it would make UC's introduction to the west harder since up until then, I believe we only had the VHS releases of War and the Pocket and Stardust memory. But on the other hand, would X get sandbagged as hard as 0079 did after 9/11.

I actually don't think it would have. 0079 was already on an uphill struggle given how ancient its animation looked even at the time.

True that, the older animation and QUALITY, didn't mesh well with a lot of kids.
But that creates another 'what if' of if 0079 was as popular as wing, would it have still gotten sandbagged after 9/11.

The smart play would've been to dub the movies of 0079 and broadcast them as an "event". 3 movies is a much easier proposition than 40-something episodes

That would have been better with getting viewers acclimated to older gundam series, but since this is still broadcast TV, they most likely would have gone with the TV series anyway since the show fills over 2 months worth of time for that slot.

When you're trying to break into an (at the time) unestablished market, you don't want to be showing off your older wares, you want to be showing off your newer ones. Stuff like Wing and 8th MS Team ran circles around the older animation.
I would also like to add that Dragon Ball was straight up just not anywhere as popular as Z or even GT in America, which is a notable outlier in the popularity of that franchise. Take that as you will.

GT didn't even get its full run lmao
Anonymous No.23445658
>>23445433
That was preemptive though. GT's first arc was so notoriously bad that when they brought it over to the US they just started airing it from the second arc with a single voice over saying "Goku and friends flew around in space for a bit and did some stuff that's not important, now here's the new villain". That's completely different from 0079 getting cancelled for bad ratings (9/11 was just the excuse).
Anonymous No.23445661

Agreed it would have been a slam dunk. After Wing and G were big hits completing the "90's AU trilogy" was just common sense. Though doing so might have given American audiences the impression that Gundam was like, I dunno, Final Fantasy, where every entry is its own thing. Which Sunrise may have feared would make it harder to get westerners into UC stuff if they were "too used" to Gundams being standalone. Regardless airing 0079 instead of X was a massive blunder.
