It's not that good as whole but it has some of the coolest action scenes ever.
The Gunbuster should've appeared in episode 2 and the show needed more than three actual fights with it or with the grunt mechs, which we don't even see fight beside episode 1 (and 2 if we are generous).
The character drama stuff is retarded and they should've just showed Gunbuster wreck big alien bugs, or at least do both at the same time.
Also, the way Gainax animates breasts is amazing

Gunbuster had a brief scene of a cyborged dolphin with some ESPers or Monks. Very brief. Blink and you miss it. It just showed the weird tech which had been developed over the years. I thought that was a great touch.

gunbuster is a great example of following through on concept (time dilation in this case)
too often a work of fiction will mention something like that and never really make good on it, often because they want to do everything instead of focusing on doing a few things right

It's okay/mediocre. It's the occasional visual flair and spectacle towards the end you watch it for. Every character is a stereotype/caricature to the very end and the drama doesn't really work well at all.

Most of the characters are really weak though. They just exist. Kazumi, Coach and Jung suck. People act like Noriko and Kazumi are these amazing partners when they barely talk to each other or spend any time together. The only good relationship in the whole show is between Noriko and Kimiko and they barely interact as well. But they show us time dilation in action and the life Noriko would have led if she didn't go into space. Even after all those years Kimiko still considered Noriko her best friend and wanted her to be in her daughter's life. Meanwhile, Kazumi was the biggest disappointment on my rewatch. She and Noriko are not friends. They're coworkers. She was nothing. Jung doesn't even ever do anything. She's the biggest non character in the show thing. Even Smith is a better character than her for at least sparking a change in Noriko.Overall, Gunbuster had too little time to develop the cast. At least Noriko was really good.

It's telling that the only thing people mention is le time dilation plot element. There's not much meat on the bone with this ova series. Everything outside of time dilation is a copy of aim for the ace's melodrama but without any development or build up.

Nailed it. The time dilation plot solely get propped up because its a form of compensating that this ova does not have a lot to it. And oh the sakuga animation is praised a lot too but no one that actually enjoys gunbuster watch it for the cool robot animation...because all of it is very short lived or have very little screen time.

I liked it well enough, but the other big sci-fi OVAs of the time (Bubblegum Crisis, Patlabor, Megazone, Dirty Pair) completely demolish it in terms of characters and stories.
