/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General
-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.
START - 8/12/25
END - 11/30/25

it is pretty expensive that is true, but even the golden warrior and every other 3rd party has an acceptable price range between 50 to 70 bucks

the latter seems like a good deal considering it comes with the metal frame, leds and a ton of weapons

Thinking of doing something with the side skirts. Since this unit won't be using the SMG, the ammo is pointless. Right skirt might be a power pack for the right arm cannon, but I'm thinking of turning the left skirt into a big putty armor piece that would better sit over the beefed up left thigh.

Still waiting on the decals to finish the MG Vidar I started over a month ago. In the meantime, this Chinese Messer kit has been interesting. Some things are very well thought out but other parts are questionable like the waist. While fitment is not as good as Bandai's kits, is much better than I expected. I'm making some alterations to the armor in an attempt to make it a bit closer to the Bandai version, but there are some things that are just too different.

the wash free airbrush just switch the needle nozzle to the mixing bottle/premade paint bottle/acrylic markers instead of the airbrush itself, so if the needle breaks, you just simply replace the needle instead of repairing or replacing the whole airbrush itself

its good to paint and the only time you need accuracy is when you have to paint very small areas, which in that case, paint brush or markers will do the job

I'm sorry anon, was it the threading on the needle cap that broke or you being a retard with the needle? Because actually a nicer airbrush will be made out of better quality components. That's actually the whole point, you know, not using the shittiest quality metal or manufacturing possible to drop the price as low as possible. This means you get nice features like threading that doesn't break from simple reassembly.

replacing and cleaning an airbrush should not be hard and tedious, its easy for a beginner to make mistake, and it is costly mistake specially if you buy like an iwata

the maintenance for a standard airbrush is insane tedious work just to keep it in working order

wash free airbrush just pushes the tediousness and the possibility of breaking the airbrush to just replacing the needle of the mixing bottle, which is just like pennies to replace.

you guys are just defensive because you all have a misplaced sense of idea that standard airbrush are better

It's actually really easy to break those tiny nozzles when you're wrenching them on. There's no way to make anything that small very tough. You probably don't paint very much if you haven't snapped a nozzle at some point.
It's such a common thing that there's specific tools made just to get the threaded part out after it happens. Even iwata makes one because they know that it happens.

So I haven't built gunpla since like 2017, and am looking to get back into the hobby. I have a bunch of MG kits in my backlog I wanna work on, but the main reason I stopped was because my eyes had some issues and I'm pretty visually impaired now. I have tools now though that should let me work on gunpla again though and I wanna get back into it so I grabbed myself the HG Wing Zero for $18 to get my feet wet again. I built mainly MGs back in the day. My question though is, do I need to buy new Gundam Markers or should the ones I already still be fine? They were stored safely with the cap on in a temperature controlled environment. I guess I could just rest them out but I'm waiting for the kit to come in before I dig out all my gear. Also, I've been using my nippers for random shit over the years, they're Tamiya, one of their nicer ones, and they still work well. Are God Hands still the go to nippers though if I do end up wanting to replace them?

It's an intentional choice of design. It does go together in two parts joined in the center, but it has a recess on one of them to create a panel line. There's actually pretty much no seams or mold lines on this thing. Nub marks are also very well hidden. I intentionally did not clean them super well to show that off.
I will go back to it and do that before I paint it and everything though.

The nozzle needs to be softer than the airbrush. I don't care what metal it is, it being that small makes it not very tough. Tiny, hollow, things are delicate. It's kind of pointless to tell this guy he needs to but a new airbrush over this tiny incident instead of helping him fix the one he has that will work fine afterwards.

I only have very basic tools but ended up buying an old HG of Dendrobium at a vintage shop which I've got to assemble now without ruining it too much, so I wanted to ask for pointers.

Is there some method to getting rid of nubs without leaving behind stressmarks that Im not aware of? I try cutting it away with the hobby knife and sanding it down with sanding sponges but it always leaves behind stressmarks. Is my knife not sharp enough and am I doing something wrong with the sanding?

Also, is there some trick to applying stickers? I put together this SD Gundam EX Standard kit of Nu-Gundam and it was hellish because I cant line them up properly.

Use the back edge of a hobby knife or toothpicks to apply them. Tweezers could work too but stickers tend to stick to it or you risk crushing the part you clip if you're not careful.
For smaller stickers like eyes and camera, you can slide them a bit into position before it starts to stick.

So I'm going to probably fuck this up but here's how I'm currently doing it. I start with tamayo panel lining, if it doesn't stick the way i want it to work, I use enamel thinner to just get rid of it. Then i swap to the 250 gundam marker to just put the raw dark lines on the kit. you have about 10s to use a cue tip to remove the gundam marker, after that you need erasers or enamel thinner. But if there are areas that you think should be lined and the "panel liner" doesn't work the marker panel liner will force it.

COPYPASTE of previous version:

KK/kuku model - Ground Gundam and Ground GM. they fixed the waist issues on these kits. great quality, but balljoints need some sanding. ADDENDUM: They recently released a Ground Gundam with all the extra accessories

Baobao model - rx78f00 hmt, jesta, jesta cannon. fantastic quality, borderline official bandai tier. ADDENDUM: Released jesta cannon, shezarr, etc.

JMS - schwarzette, mkii gundam, g-line normal armor, gm spartan as i said, zeta gundam, hyaku shiki in both shiny and champagne gold, gto dom, transient gundam, sandrock, and acguy. quality is very good, their versions of these kits often add extra detail like panel lines on the mkii or a part separated crotch v on the g-line. they also did a SD nightingale but it's pretty bad. i think they did a FM Aerial that was pretty good. ADDENDUNM: Ded. WMH has the molds for their hyakushiki now.

XFS - honestly besides the GM Spartan they haven't done many things of note. Their Windam has issues but is ok.

weimei/warmodel - sucks. typical bootleg shit. bad fitment, flashing, etc. can be fixed with work but don't buy unless it's some kit you can't get otherwise.

AK model - only did GM Spartan. high quality, but pricier.

WMH/XYS - producers of the recent wave of bootleg Efreet kits. you might see claims these are JMS and XFS respectively but they're not. quality is pretty bad same as weimei.

kurofuneco - their only product is a 3rd party ez8 based on some modeler's 3d print files. i've heard good things, don't have mine yet.

changlong - only product is a bootleg RG 2.0 RX78, under the number 5501. heard very good things.

fat cat - 1/100 rg 2.0 rx78, god tier

others -
>Pale Rider bootleg series. good bootleg, but they are copying very meh kits to begin with.
>Recent wave of 00 bootlegs (Plutone, Astraea, etc) - I only have the Plutone, but it's good.

Cool kit. On a tangentially related note, the Gunraid made me realize why I hate a lot of late-UC Gundams. They have too many soft curves. We need more chunkers like the F80
Anonymous No.23449246 [Report]
IS IT REALLY THAT BAD? NO.

This kit is the definition of overhated, its just a mid kit, bandai has created a super well engineering to the 1/144 scale gunpla model kit
This kit isnt perfect but the major downside of the kit such as the waist joint can be easily tighten using super glue, also the transformation. Its pretty hard at first but after a while you'll got used to it, for me this rg is better than rg aile atrike and build strike and is an underrated kit to be bought. But its still not beginner friendly tho, its not because of anything its just the parts are too small for beginners untrained hands. Overall this kit is a pretty solid kit and has an average amount of articulation and a lot of gimmick that ill rate it a 7.6/10

Working through my first build in like 7 years and it's going pretty well. I'm the guy who has eye problems and am pretty much legally blind, i Have magnifiers and what not to help but it's still not really where I'd like it to be. However, the build is going much better than I thought it would. I'm nearly done, finished the main unit and just have his wings and weapons to go. I had some trouble with some of the stickers and the panel lining I've done already is a little rough, but I chalk that up to it being 1/144, I usually built MGs so I'm more used to the 1/100 scale. I think I'll have less issues with an MG since the parts aren't quite as tiny as they are on HGs. What do you guys think of my progress so far? This is like 2 or so hours of work.

Anyone here tried painting the backside of the Unicorn's psycho frame chrome silver and then gloss coat it to make it pop a little better? On paper the idea sounds good but in practice I think because of all the sliding around the pieces do when you attach them and transform the kit the paint would scratch right off.

Also I'm thinking of trying out a third party metal inner frame for the MG but I don't like that the feet are made of metal. Anyone ever try painting a metal surface? Hitting it with primer and then lacquers should do just fine right

It's the terminology Bandai uses for the black and blue color scheme that the Mk II started with and other MS with that same colorscheme (Official stuff like the GM Quel and what-if stuff like the Titans Zeta from Gundam vs Zeta Gundam)
>B-B-B-But what about these other Titans MS like the Marasai or Hizack
It's to sell toys in the 80s, simple as that. Little Nobuo might not remember the name of a mobile suit that shows up for like two episodes but if he goes "I want the green and orange one!" the guy at the store will know that he wants an Asshimar

>Generic 30MS/FAG faces with very little difference between each kit
>Proportions are basically the same even between different brands
>99% of builds follow the same formula of tacking on shit below the thigh, with lower torso, arms and thighs unchanged, with some kind of wings/jets slapped on the back.
Honestly the best builds of these I have seen here was the Hexa Gear from Melee and the Sanitizer maid. These were the only builds that broke free of the monotony of commercialized mecha musume kit designs.

You just described general traits of mecha musume. Of course they will have same female proportions, that's what sells them. Their equipment will be either located on thighs, back, some sort of sub-arms/hover weaponry since these are the locations that can hold even heavy equipment without breaking mentioned female lines.

As someone that is buying an item from china that was designed in japan, it's based on origin. The Japanese tablet I want that is manufactured in china gets hit with Chinese tariffs. any bandai kits are made in japan so they are 15% currently (with deminus exceptions under $800 so no taxes) on the 29th it will be a flat fee of $80 on international shipping from japan. the claim is deminus goes away on the 29th were assuming, it's hard to know what it's going to be. Finished my first painted build. Not sure if it was the humidity or just the end of my top coat can (decided to finish that before getting airbrushable stuff), but I ended up with a frosted effect on a top of parts with the top of the gun and the feet being the worst.
Left a few other paint defects as "learning points" like a number of pieces with uneven coats as I got lazy and painted them on the runner. Some of the white pieces are also light gray as I didn't mix the white paint enough and I left that for the same reason as the uneven coats.
Also it was interesting just how much tighter a little paint on joints makes a kit. I might mask off all the joints next time.
