Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

They're fine. They don't airbrush nearly as nicely as lacquers, but they're not even half as bad as this place would have you believe. The only real issue with them is that they don't handle abrasion as well, so areas of a model likely to get lots of friction will probably have paint rubbing off fairly soon compared to if you'd used lacquers

White acrylic are generally really bad. Tamiya flat white and vallejo game color dead white are the only ones who are not total garbage.
Acrylic metal paints can't compete against lacquer.

I use waterbasedacrylics because I handpaint and don't have an airbrush. Vallejo Model Color, Mr Hobby Acrysion and AK 3rd gen are my go to.
I've never airbrushed it but I can tell you that Mecha Color is usually too thin to paint by hand.
On the other hand, the MC Varnish is a very good "brush on" varnish and I use it regularly.

Vallejo mecha color is kinda bad for brush painting. It's too sticky and has bad brush marks because of it. Vallejo game color is great for brushing on though.
Make sure you topcoat your acrylics. Acrylics aren't very durable so a tough clearcoat is very important. I suggest mr. super clear. It's lacquer but it's a top coat so you can apply it to a finished model usually.

I've been trying to get my friend into Gunpla/plamo, but he wasn't too interested until I showed him the Crossbone X-1, after which he bought the RG, an HG F91 to practice on after reading the first manga, and ordered Harrison's F91 MG from P Bandai all without telling me before our build day for his RG. He said it was due to the strong theme vs it just being a pirate Gundam, so I'm looking for more kits in that direction.
I'm thinking some of the Wing and G Gundam kits would be up his alley, but looking for other ideas.
Writing this is making me think that some of the Zeon aquatic suits might be good also.
