It’s a loud, flashy shōnen power fantasy that plays with themes of willpower and identity, but only as far as the audience gets to insert themselves into Simon’s shoes and go “wow I too can start weak and still be the biggest, strongest hero if I say Kamina Sama's quirky catchphrases loud enough!”

But Simon’s “arc” is paper-thin to anyone with a reading age

Nia gets fridged later so Simon can get wanked off and see himself as wise and emotionally mature like the buddha after an entire series of being the complete opposite (more hollow power fantasy with no real internal growth—just empty gestures scripted to look meaningful. You’ll find this is a recurring theme).

And Simon still worships Kamina's ghost who still gives him the cocky thumbs up and instagram quotes for mimicking Kamina in everything he does while Yoko and Nia continue to suck Kamina's spiritual cock.

Simon is a wish fulfillment character, but worse than most because he’s sold to you as a subversion. The story says: “Look, he’s not Kamina, he’s his own man!” But everything he does is filtered through Kamina’s ghost. His growth is only accepted and rewarded when he becomes Kamina 2.0.

That’s Burger King Individualism: “Be yourself—but only if you’re just like Kamina and let your girlfriend worship Kamina.”

It’s the same energy as Rey Skywalker, where the story insists “Rey is unique, she makes her own choices!” while giving her all of Luke’s milestones, lightsaber, friends, and name. It’s cosplay as growth. He has no willpower, he's just a wimpy spineless cuck who watches from a bush while Kamina cucks him.

I'm talking all time. While what you say is true it doesn't mean the quality of every anime I would put above Gunbuster has to necessarily be high. There are plenty of actual good anime, though, even if they're not masterpieces. Gunbuster itself doesn't rise above mediocrity. I tried rewatching it the other day and the first episode is god awful. And yes, I've seen Aim for the Ace.
