You're almost there. Gundam fans are familiar with the overarching story and HF's place in it while people who aren't familiar are rating it as a standalone experience. For what it's worth, i wasn't a fan of it either but maybe part 2 and 3 can turn things around for me.

I liked the fights, but I may have been wowed by the good HDR work on an OLED. It made the beams and explosions pop in a good way.

The main character is lame, and the story is strange for a standalone movie. The only good point is the mecha battle, but it's too dark and the audience can't fully see the CGI models. So it's annoying to mecha fans. Not sure why the director wants the battle shrouded in darkness.

Hathaway fights a little bit more, but then the Feds use an electric NET and Hathaway crashes into it and gets tangled. Then he gets captured. Then he gets executed by a firing squad.

Nothing changes. He accomplishes nothing.

Even the captured Xi Gundam doesn't matter because mobile suit technology is all about getting smaller and miniaturization. Xi gets analyzed, quickly outdated, shoved in some storage container, and forgotten forever. Xi was a new Gundam but the Feds literally had the predecessor Penelope which already has the same tech, just slightly bulkier because it was the previous month's model. They never even had a need to analyze it.

Even Tomino said in an interview he doesn't want to direct Hathaway's Flash because it's too dark and depressing. He wrote the novel when he wanted Gundam to end and he was depressed.

There's no good ending to this story. Nothing to look forward to. Hathaway doesn't get anymore epic fights. It's all downhill and a train wreck now.

Years later, the F90FF manga and Monthly MS Magazine articles shows a bunch of resistance groups implying Hathaway being martyred did successfully spark tons of rebellion. Pic's Rue Rahvata rose up shortly after Mafty's Rebellion, have a similar modus operandi and their example MS incorporates a bunch of Messer parts so there's an implication that they're at least linked somehow. However Rue Rahvata was also noted to operated in the colonies so even if there's a direct connection they're unlikely to be straight up just Mafty remnants. Still, the long term effects seem to divide the Feds enough to eventually lead into the Warring States period of UC.
