/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General
-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

got a kit from Cheng, 3 days ago. i have been building it for some time and i think i am...
not regretful of it. somehow.

i saw this 00 shia quant in edgelord colors, it was paired with a boy and a neat looking transgender recolor. it was cheap, even with tax and shipping, like less that 18 usd, so i got it.
surprisingly the box art was a thirst trap.

the manual was a copy that was marvelously well done and professionally forged very skillfully and noticeably at 50% zoom. still serviceable.
the center transparent piece for the chest cracked when placed but surprisingly didnt fell apart when removed, i still used plastic cement to attempt to fill in the cracks but to no avail.
there are 3 shades of red, one of them is noticeably purpler that the other, potentially thanks to the purple detail runners the kit has, asides one of the reds being made of a plastic that simply shrunk far more that it should, the sword had one of the guard parts glued together.
the binder thruster link is incredibly tight, while having gaps somehow. the gaps were filled with plastic cement and carefully cut pla pieces to link them.
a policap broke in a surprising way, most specially because it was of the correct type of plastic. the cap was not fixed thanks to how the binder squeezes it together.
2 of the GN binder would not sit in the GN shield. upon closer inspection i noticed the peg on the shield was deformed. after shaving+cut it in shape, they now snap together rather nicely.
the hips are terrible. the side skirts pop off easily. i shaved off the pegs until they fit neatly on the hip housing. the rear skirt was such a tight fit (thanks to the wrong shade of red) it now has stretch marks, although i could do nothing about that.
the head piece has 2 red parts that are in such tension im sure they will snap with time. the rear GN drive lacks the correct colored sticker but i dont blame Cheng for this one.

very tight shit bootleg, had fun making it, 3/10 would buy again

You can convert that kit back into the Warrior parts because I'm pretty sure it reuses the parts from the standard green version (which the Yzak and Rey version plates cut the Warrior parts off, though it relies on color-correcting duplicate plates like with Rey's version).

No

The material for this one is a bit strange
Especially for the backpack
I tried to spray paint the black lines. The arms and the legs are fine but the material and matted surface for the backpack prevented me to really clean up any extra paint that went over the line.
The black paint ended up smeared into the plastic with the thinner and paint remover.

Also due to the design the backpack is heavy but the rest of the body is really light.

I got a better time playing the old MSIA dunbine toy than handling this. And that thing is like almost 20 years old

I would say go with the stickers but looking at some of the Japanese review pictures you can clearly see the stickers are peeling.

So hand brush the thing?

I've seen some people here swear by premixing paint in bottles and I have a few questions for you guys
Is there any particular type of dropper/bottle cap that works best or are any of them fine?
Won't lacquer paint melt the plastic bottle?
Does the paint separate or dry out over time?
What size steel balls do you put in the bottles?
I mostly want to do this to save time when priming or top coating since I won't be mixing colors with those anyway

Built the Red Gundam last night, it's weird how much less stable this is than the GQux, even before mounting the bits. The kit was much less sticker intense than the GQux, but they want you to put a Zeon sticker on top of the 3D cross on the shield and it looks bad even if you attach it there first so you can fit it tight.
It also should have come with arms for the bits. No idea why it expects you to buy 3 ABs for 1 HG.

i think the sticker thing was unavoidable. there are 3rd party waterslides already anyways. as for the bits, i imagine they justified it with how it had 6 in one scene, 2 in another, and then none for most of the series. The EF star is basically completely covered, if they made it flat it would look nearly the same and work better with stickers (and decals). But I suppose it is a separate part as didn't they sell an OG Gundam colored variant?
What I meant for the bits is just to get AB arms for them in the box, not full ABs. Then you could just use it on an AB4/5 with the bits not on the kit.
I actually thought the included parts for mounting the bits where you wanted were smart.

The flow type panel liners can crack ABS. If PS is under stress (read - assembled), it can also crack from them, but Bandai's KPS on newer kits largely avoids this (but still panel line early as it's easier).
This is because flow panel liner has a ton of enamel thinner in it.

If it’s shallow and the lines are erased too easily, then scribing is the main way to fix it, especially when using tamiya panel liner that needs a crevice to flow. Other option could be to use a marker pen (e.g. GM01 or micron pen) and carefully erase into edge with thumb or pencil eraser. In the same vein, picking a “stronger” erasing can help with reducing smudging as it’ll clean up more. What works varies with what ink you use and how long ink’s been sat on part (30sec too soon for ink to dry, 3-5min ink’s dry and only excess gets cleaned off, 3 months will need more scrubbing)

As for the topcoat, if there isn’t any frosting (white spots from excess humidity) and simply a lack of matte, it’s probably not coated enough. Blind spots that airbrush/spray might’ve missed, not enough topcoat (part should look damp but not drenched), or first layer didn’t dry long enough before putting on second layer (30min+ between imo)

I’d say stay away from bootlegs of IBO kits or any older stuff like Seed, 00, or Wing. Unicorn is hard to call because there are so many releases from different companies, so it’s basically gambling. I’d say anything from GTO or the HG Revive line is a safe bet, even if it’s dirt cheap. Overall, anything made around 2018–2019 and later is usually solid. For example, the recent Ground Gundam, GM Spartan Black Dog, or the gold HG Hyaku Shiki (props to JMS for the undergating) are all great with no complaints. But at the same time, the HG Gusion that dropped this year is trash. So yeah, even the newew IBO kits still suck.

Sanding is to smooth down the surface as much as possible, particularly for gates. You don't want the nubs to be popping up underneath your paint job, so you cut and sand them down so that you have a flush surface to apply the primer and paint to.
Anonymous No.23501866 >>23501878

Sanding has not been smoothing surfaces very well, I lack either the tools or the skills for that, possibly both. There's various metal files and sandpaper and all they've done is just make scratches wider and worse, or otherwise causing new problems. I've been grinding nubs away into oblivion with my fingernails with relatively no issue, and the nub marks have been fine just as long as panel-liner or marker never ever ever gets anywhere near a nub mark.

That's what higher grit sandpaper and/or tools are for. The higher the grit, the smoother the finish but the less effective it is. The way it's usually done is, you start with low grit (AKA rough) sandpaper that can quickly and efficiently clear lots of nub material, then progressively swap to higher grit (AKA finer) sandpaper to buff out the more obvious scratches left by the previous sandpaper jobs. Usually I cut off as much of the nub as I can with a hobby knife first, that leaves less for the sandpaper to do and I can switch to higher grits earlier.

Depending on your preference you could also go for a glass file (not a name brand one, just a generic Chinesium one from Amazon, maybe even nail salon grade ones). I bought a set of three from Amazon when I first started out, approximately 2,000 grit and can clear nubs super nicely.

I prefer 1/100 scale to 1/144, I just think 1/144 kits clutter a shelf too quickly and they're too small to really have the presence I want, but most MGs are too complex, especially the more recent ones, those complex inner frames are pointless for me since I glue up my kits when completed, and the over detailed exteriors lock you into a specific look when a less detailed kit is like a blank canvas I get to play around on with my own details.

I really only care enough about UC to buy an MG.

At most I'll pick up an HG of a MS that I think looks cool from one of those series, because an HG represents like maybe a week long commitment, but I'm unlikely to have the attachment to them to commit to an MG build of them. Maybe if I just snapfit straight build my kits I'd buy more varied MGs, but an MG is like a month long project and I have to really care about the subject if I want to finish. That's not going to happen with anything from G, Wing, Seed, 00, Greco, IBO, Gwitch, Gcucks, ECT.

I like OG Gundam, Char's Gelgoog, Zeong, Alex, Kampfer, Zeta, Hyaku Shiki, MK-II/Super Gundam, Rick Dias, The O, ZZ, Qubeley, Nu Gundam, Sazabi, F91, Victory and maybe a handful of other MS mostly from UC. I have a soft spot for the Tallgeese despite not being a fan of most Wing suits for example, that's my only Non-UC MG. So those are pretty much the only MS I'll ever buy MGs for. There are a few MSVs I like which are like the bastard children of one or more of these I'd be interested in like the Delta Gundam or the Gundam MK-III but I'm more than happy with a RE/100 for stuff like that.

I do. I prefer 1/100 just because I like that size better and think the simpler builds and sturdier construction of glorified HGs is preferable for most kits. MGs are reserved for my absolute favorites, they take so much time to paint and detail I'm not buying MGs of anything I don't love. I like fixed hands too, and I don't need to display the intricately detailed inner frame of every kit I build so why waste a week of my life on something I'm just going to cover up?

Yeah, when I want to go all out on something I love like the Zeta, no HG would ever satisfy me so I have to get the MG, but for most stuff I just want 1/100, and I'd be happy with a glorified HG of it, I can detail the exterior as much as I want, and the simpler design gives me more freedom to experiment on. So as long as the kit has the articulation and looks good from the outside I don't care. I glue up my kits once I get them into a pose I want prior to painting anyway. So much of the extra detail of an MG will never be seen.

I don't really want to play with my Gunpla after I build it. I find the enjoyment in adding detail to the kit. I want good articulation so I can get it into an interesting pose, I want it to look good on the outside because that's what everyone is going to see. What I don't need (most of the time) is a ton of overengineered innerframes and gimmicks with weak fiddly hands. Sometimes that's exactly what I want, again for the handful of MS I really care about and I want to display with open hatches or something like that MG is the clear option, but again for most kits I don't need that and I'd be happy with 1/100 HGs.

The familiar with a new coat of paint, its why the RX-78-2 has about 100 kits and they always sell well. So again like the Tiger II fan the RX-78-2 fan just wants to build RX-78-2s, the Zaku fan just wants to build Zakus, and the Zeta fan just wants to build Zetas, and a Zeta 3.0 4.0 5.0 ect just represents another excuse to buy their favorite thing again in a new form and then they get to compare and contrast all the little improvements bandai has made over the years. I mean haven't you bought one of those ancient MGs from 1999 only to buy the new one from 2014 or whatever and enjoyed seeing how far they've come?

I don't see the problem with offering a cheaper alternative to the MG in 1/100 scale. I like 1/100 but most of the time I don't want an $80 kit when half the parts will never be seen once I build it. I'd often take a $40 kit, with the same level of articulation that looks just as good on the outside. If they expanded out the RE100 line to include things that aren't obscure I'd welcome it. Its also just so much faster to build and paint a kit without those super complex innerframes.

there are multiple factors for that. the reason why the Tamiya LFA was that detailed is because Toyota gave them full schematics of the whole car to work on. other cars Tamiya designers are just eyeballing them from photo references. you see this mostly on their recent motorsport models. sometimes they're just cutting corners by omitting engine detail for example since most modelers build them closed anyway.

The only thing I don’t like is how glossy the plastic is. I’ll probably just hit it with a matte topcoat, throw on some decals, and leave it unpainted, except for the eyes. Nice kit, but the joints are all very tight outside of the hip swing out, which makes the legs kind of annoying to pose, and there are a few seam lines that would be tough to weld without locking other parts in there (but they're pretty small so you could probably get away with ignoring them)
Lots of tiny parts like the yellow bits all over the suit, felt like I was building a koto kit at times
On the equipment, I don't care much for the arm blades being asymmetrical and the big cannon is a bit weird: it has a swing out handle and a chainsaw handle-looking bit at the back but there's nothing in the manual that suggests how it's supposed to be held, there's only images of it being used like a shoulder cannon (but it can't do that from the way its posed on all the other images, you'd have to take it off and put it back on the other way around)

That is correct, you can just glass file a nub from the start without using increasing grits of sandpaper. It's just recommended to try to cut the nub down as much as possible so that there's less work to do afterward.

And no, to my knowledge you don't want to rough up a Gunpla surface with sandpaper before priming it. That sounds stupid as fucking hell and a recipe for your pieces having uneven coats of paint. At the most you want to wash down the pieces with very diluted detergent to get rid of residual mold release (mostly a problem with non-Bandai kits since Bandai are super good about this stuff) and the oil from your fingerprints from handling the pieces.

Here's the ultimate lesson though: It's okay to make mistakes, because learning is part of the fun. Your very first paint attempt is rarely ever going to be perfect, and you should expect to make mistakes going in. That's perfectly fine, that's just how life works, but if you don't want it to cost you then you do your paint job to a super cheap kit so that if you accidentally "ruin" it then you aren't out an expensive MG.

>It's okay to make mistakes, because learning is part of the fun.
I know technically all mistakes are theoretically correctable, but I get fucking inconsolable if I mess up a kit I care about. Inversely, I've been having a blast from start to finish getting fun kits I got at a bargain or was indifferent to. I think it's a legitimate autism thing.
I don't really feel the need to paint every kit apart from minor color correction, although I was told that even just applying finish makes them look nicer, but I thought it'd be nice to have a cheap red Gundam that doesn't look like ass. I think I got used to the plastic swirls and default unpainted plastic from western toys, and I'm just happy to have these robots standing around.

I am speaking from experience, because I have made this mistake. Frosted glass files have a very low grit and are comparable to the red handled metal files you can get for very cheap. They produce a rough surface that needs a lot of sanding to smooth out.
Manicure "nanofiles" are also very cheap but they produce a mirror-like surface that needs a bit of sanding to make it less reflective so it matches the rest of the plastic.

It's not marketing bullshit, these two types of files cost about the same, they just have different use cases.
