I know this is bait but I actually really don't like Armageddon much and enjoyed most of the other Getter anime more.
It had great mecha scenes but everything outside of those didn't do much for me and it is probably my least favorite Imagawa mecha project.

I think it best encapsulated the ideal of what Getter and its experience is (although the same could be argued about New, I like both), I'm going to assume that by least-favourite you did still slightly like it, and that it's just ranked the lowest.
>Giant Robo, Tetsujin, Shin Mazinger, G Gundam
Aside from anyone taking issue with no follow-up to Giant Robo and Shin Mazinger, these are all really heavy hitters in their own right, so I could definitely see that. I genuinely don't know how I'd rank these from 1-5 even if you held me up at gunpoint.
Giant Robo, Shin Mazinger, G Gundam, Getter, Tetsujin? But I really fucking liked Tetsujin as well. Maybe Getter > G Gundam if it was really bothersome having so many wonderful randos and being stuck in the highlands, but I guess Tetsujin doesn't pack as much punch due to it having a lovely series of anthologies that often hammered in the same point.
It's actually a happy annoyance that you worded things that way, because I have absolutely no idea how to rank Imagawa's works.

I started Getter recently with this series and had no clue what was happening but I thought I was awesome. What's the direct prequel to this so I know what happened to Michiru?
Also, I didn't realize how much later mecha ripped this off (not that it didn't rip off other 90s titles)

>What's the direct prequel to this so I know what happened to Michiru?
There's no real "prequel" to it aside from an audio drama as mentioned previously. There's an one-shot taking place during the Moon Wars (that's the event that took place before the series, a war between humans and invaders. The humans won, but the invaders infiltrated them as Cohen and Stinger) but it doesn't really explain anything or lead into the OVAs. It's just mostly an action sequence. But:
What happened to Michiru was that she was infected by invaders, realized this, and intentionally botched the combination sequence to kill herself and the invader with her; for one reason or another she never told anyone about this, leading Ryoma and Hayato to believe it was an accident and Prof. Saotome going insane and blaming it on Ryoma and Hayato. The invaders in Michiru's corpse survived and in turn infected Saotome, who asked Hayato to kill him and frame Ryoma to keep him at bay in fear he might interfere. But, the invaders resurrected Saotome's corpse and that's where the OVA plot begins.

NTA and it's been a while since I've rewatched Armageddon, but there seemed to be an indeterminate amount of time post-infection and getting taken over, and I remember being confused about to what extent Saotome was still following his plan and staying in control vs absolutely gone towards the invaders
Anonymous No.23513771 [Report] >>23513776
>>23513754
I think Saotome was semi-lucid during Armageddon, at points he's completely so, most notably when he dies; he gives some parting words to the Getter Team asking them to finish his plans and holds back the Invaders when they try to escape from his body and the exploding Getter Robo G. Lambert also appears to be lucid after Benkei's team takes him in but is taken over by the Invaders after he dies, but I wouldn't discard the possibility of them using social stealth since they also disguise themselves as puppies in New York to catch them off guard. Meanwhile Cohen and Stinger are obviously completely taken over and the ones in the Alaskan hostage situation seem to be completely lucid despite being assimilated into the Invader. They're all over the place, I wouldn't think much about it.

Yeah, the other ones I could sort of overlook, but Saotome and the Michiru reveal really confused me as a kid. Is it just intense amounts of willpower, the kind that comes with being a hot-blooded main cast member? I mean, it's sort of crucial to know when he's being lucid and when he's grieving and when he's like, literally possessed by aliens.
Anonymous No.23513887 [Report]

Armageddon has more references to Kyomu Senki* than Getter itself and there you find the aliens/invaders among other stuff.
Actually it seems Ishikawa was expanding the main Getter manga with Getter Ark, taking a similar direction of Kyomu Senki, but we'll never know for sure. It's a true pain how the animated Ark series didn't take the opportunity to go further and stopped at a crucial moment of the story.
Back to Armageddon... Imagawa had an approach like he had with Giant Robo and it was amazing. Ryoma like Shinichi Kuruma (Majuu Sensen, same manga where Stinger and Cowen are from) is brilliant, not just fanservice.
When Imagawa was out everything changed; Armageddon is still good after all, but it could have been far better.

* it must have been such a good idea that it was reused for new getter.
Anonymous No.23514134 [Report] >>23518147 >>23519929
It's always weird reading about reception to this series and how people like the three first Imagawa episodes so much, when I honestly feel like they are an aimless mess of weird soap opera twists that contradict themselves within the three episodes themselves, but people shit on the rest of the show, which is the part I actually like.
Shin Getter actually gets to do something besides get it's tomahawk broken by Stinger and Cohen. The OVA version of Black Getter shows up and leaves a giant impression on the franchise that's still felt to this day. The soundtrack introduces those 10/10 jazzy tracks. We get more of a setting resembling the Getter Go manga. Shin Getter 2 gets to do more than it has in pretty much any other Getter media. And while the weird changes made to the Getter Go pilots are definitely a little obtuse, they still manage to feel more stable than how they handled the main cast in the pre time skip episodes.
I'm sure if Imagawa had stuck around, he could have sorted things out in a satisfying way. But as it is, I think his episodes are the weakest.
Anonymous No.23514149 [Report] >>23514294
>>23506167
I never understood this twist. Even if you ignore the lack of communication not really making sense, Saotome got to see Michiru was infected by the invaders. You literally see that within the Imagawa episodes. So he should already be suspicious or clued in on to what actually happened.

Anonymous No.23514294 [Report]

I think in the Imagawa plot the invaders were coming from Getter energy itself, which is why they were just appearing everywhere and taking over people like Michiru and Dr.Saotome, not just aliens that eat Getter.

That explains why they were appearing everywhere and taking over people like Michiru and Saotome. Or the other failed clones unlike Gou that ended up looking monstruous. There's that whole scene with Getter energy -reversing- evolution too, point it's actually taking things to a more primal state, which ends up completely unexplained by the show afterwards since it just doesn't fit with "the invader like eating Getter energy, but are otherwise unrelated to it".

I just love the invaders too much to hate this OVA. Their designs, their function as essentially a militarized version of the monster from The Thing, the way they are animated, the way they keep you guessing as to how much of their victim's psyche is still active post assimilation.
And since they literally aren't from Getter, you can't really get them out of any other Getter content.

I agree, it deserves more credit, I really liked the introduction of Kei and the way she contrasts with the old Getter pilots who are more rugged and ruthless. Its just that Go presents this huge dead weight, he says nothing meaningful and is a completely uninteresting character and yet he keeps wasting screen time by virtue of being the Getter-1 pilot. Its like the new director had no idea what to do with him or what Imagawa had planned for him because the mystery surrounding him is resolved early on and does nothing to change him as a character. I wish they would have had the balls to just make Getter-2 the main form until so Kei got more screentime instead of sharing it with Go.

You guys need to take off the nostalgia goggles and rewatch this shit. The first three episodes barely even establish a tone, it's just nonstop twists and empty allusions to obtuse nonsense (Hayato's UFO!) in a desperate attempt to seem mysterious. The only cool thing is Ryoma fighting mass produced G's and yes a WAY shorter sequence than people remember.

I mean, Imagawa did entire shows like that, and people love those. Armageddon had that alongside great mecha animation (while Shin Mazinger was fairly static, and Giant Robo focus a lot on non-giant robo stuff).

In fact, his next project, another redo of an old Mecha Manga (Getta Robo), will be out in Japan in the fall. This was indeed rugged news! When pressed for general plot or if it was going to work into the Giant Robo story somehow he came close to telling us, but shied away when he thought that his superiors might somehow find out that he told. Yow! And I thought that Mulder was paranoid.

>Imagawa spent a lot of time talking about his dismissal from the Getter Robo project, showing that is still a sore point with him. While Imagawa didn't want the details reproduced on the Internet, it's safe to say that he lost the job because he was late with the project and there was a lot of pressure to finish it on time (It should be noted that Imagawa was a couple of years late finishing Giant Robo.) Also, Imagawa hinted that, if he had stayed on Getter Robo, there would have been some obvious links between that series and Giant Robo.

Giant Robo being powered by nuclear energy was part of the original plot, and retconning that would take away from the original work. If I had to guess, there would have been a shared character or element between the two, like how Murasame in his Tetsujin-28 series is the same as in Giant Robo (albeit subtler, given he wouldn't have the license to any of Yokoyama's works).

Getter Robo Hien and some anthologies touch upon those a tiny bit, and there's also Devolution. None of which are by Ishikawa (afaik) but it's better than nothing... we can only continue speculating, and I know someone way back (backpedaling?) suggested that it was an acceptable ending, because the struggle and fight is something that goes on forever. >it doesn't feel right to not understand
Aside from the premise of Getter Robo with the three pilots, professor, and daughter, there's not really much essential background knowledge you'd need for Armageddon.
>Arc (anime)
There's a few cute easter eggs or bonuses but don't expect any proper resolution or ending.
>Should i go through Mazinger too?
>I don't know what to say about the ancient civilization infinity machine or whatever
Infinity is really drawn-out in SRW whereas the movie itself is actually pretty harmless.
>Mazinger is a short OVA that captures the "feeling" of Mazinger
>Shin Mazinger is a very fun remake but with a sequel never ever
>the original Toei shows aged well but most people probably won't pick it up unless they really love Mazinger
>Infinity in turn is more rewarding having come from the Toei shows because you notice all the loving detail they put in
>Shin Mazinger Zero's a rather unique and fun manga that really appreciates Mazinger and Go Nagai's works in general
I'd say you're not obligated to watch Mazinger but you'd also be missing out if you ignored it. The barebones premise you generally only need to know is
>grampa Juuzou died giving a robot to Koji
>Sayaka pilots a helper robot and is the main professor's daughter (there's three helper professors also)
>fatass tough-guy Boss is a friend and gets his own helper bot later (so does Shiro sometimes, Koji's younger brother)
>Dr Hell has two or three lieutenants as they try to take over the world
>Z gets its shit kicked in against the ancient Greeks/Mycenae with its own cast of villains
>Great debuts, piloted by Tetsuya
>Jun pilots a helper robot, she and Tetsuya were adopted by Kenzo who's Koji's father
>they were trained to properly deal with the Mycenae, eventually Z helps too

Unironically the closest you'll get is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann; Nakashima didn't have access to the Getter Robo IP, but he was Ishikawa's editor and had some idea of where he was going.

If you took the gist of the plot and translated into Getter terms, the answer would be something like Kamui and Saint Dragon reduce Earth to a wasteland and then begin creating a new race of human-Dinosaur hybrids. Small pockets of humanity manage to survive by retreating underground to the Dinosaur Empire's old hideouts, but Kamui (who has been made immortal by BUG) can't bring himself to exterminate harmless villages and mostly just allows his Gettersaurus army to harass them. Then after a few centuries some plucky villagers manage to cobble together some Getters from Gettersaurus parts, but unlike previous Getter Teams their hot-blooded "Ryoma" ends up ceding leadership to their kind-hearted "Musashi", who shakes Kamui's will and defeats him in single combat. A few years later a godlike alien who hates Getter Rays realises that the Andromeda Stellaration's last-ditch plan has failed, and decides to crash the larval Getter Emperor into Earth to destroy both at once. However the new Musashi manages to hijack it and evolve it along a different path, a Super Getter Robo that brings hope instead of ruin. They then fly off to fight the alien, with a remorseful Kamui joining them as a copilot now that he believes fate can be changed. The final shot is a recreation of the Getter Legion's introduction from Ark, revealing that they've installed a limiter on Emperor's power and are now a peaceful organisation similar to the Federation from Star Trek.

I unironically liked Armageddon more when I was less familiar with the series. The mysterious elements actually felt mysterious when I had less context, instead of just feeling like a shotgun blast of ideas to pick up on later and Imagawa re-using ideas from his Giant Robo. At the time I assumed we were seeing characters at the end of their journey being thrust into another world changing event, which made everything seem big and grand. Now I realize everyone's reactions to the two failed clones taking on the appearances of the leaders of the dinosaur and oni empires implies there was no previous encounter with either faction in this continuity. Which just leaves the previous invader attack referred to as the moon wars, which must not have been too involved considering everyone on earth still acts like they are totally unfamiliar with how the invaders work. So in theory these seemingly rugged, jaded versions of our heroes are actually relatively green.
Most importantly, before I knew better I wasn't able to get worked up at how much they screwed over Go (the manga character ) just to repurpose him into more of a plot device than a character.
That said, assuming it's not one of the janky episodes, it's probably my favorite depiction of the Getter technology in motion. Both how it depicts the mechanical aspect of the transformations as a series of independent panels shifting into one fluid shape (you also see this what the getters get danaged) and how it depicts the organic body horror in a way that I actually think does the manga justice. I also liked how the mecha are chunky/cylindrical and a little cartoonish but treated absolutely seriously and still seem scary and dangerous. The Mazinkaizer OVA captures this too, but few other series really capture that look and feel for classic Mecha.
And the in invaders in general are very cool.

Wasn't the brain bug plot actually from an Ishikawa one-off?

Yeah, the Kedora come from "Relic of Terror", a Mazinger one shot from Ishikawa included in the first Getter Arc volume.

I don't think we were supposed to think too hard about the Gore and Burai cameos but this is actually a pretty interesting point. I mean, I guess even one war can fuck you up horribly, so I guess they didn't need to go through, like, three. I agree with your point about Go but it definitely wasn't as bad as me misremembering him just only screaming constantly from when I watched it as a kid.

Not that anon, but the problem with Armageddon Go is that he's Go in name only. Doing that with some minor character like Kei is fine, but Go is a protagonist. It's freaking weird to do that to him.

Yeah, having read the manga after, it was a bit of a shame. Armageddon Go is still pretty reliable and he still is a friend (and I can't not think about him just walking into the Bettermen dimension in SRW 30) but yeah, he's a completely different friend

One thing that makes Mazinger stand out to me conceptually despite Nagai mostly using Z as a "fun/non-serious" work to help himself deal with the pressure of working on Devilman at the time is the God or Devil idea. It's like a grander, heavier way of saying "with great power comes great responsibility" or choosing between being a hero to protect or being a villain to destroy.

This, except it doesn't come up as an extremely heavy thing in the actual Mazinger Z works, which is a bit of a shame

It's not any real sort of closure but Ken Ishikawa did a post-Arc interview sometime before his death and basically says that the future in Arc is a "bad end" where Getter has evolved without human will so presumably Takuma or someone else changes the future to a good end
