Gundam Origin
Holy fuck, this was bad.
I had low expectations regarding the writing, but even the visuals were mediocre compared to Unicorn which came out prior to this.
Atleast Loum Battle was nice.

Either you're rage baiting people into talking about Gundam the Origin which is fake

or

you actually hated it and now you are looking for people to validate your opinion which is gay

OP is fake and gay

What specifically did you dislike about the writing?

The retcons where the feddies had mechs prior to the war, except they're garbage and jobbed to the zeon aces?
Char written to be a Mary Sue piloting the proto-guntank (exist cause of retcon lol) and taking out multiple other guntanks while in diapers?
The lack of tension since the feds just get clubbed endlessly and the zeeks face no challenge whatsoever? Therefore making the series depend on nostalgia alone for entertainment?

I think its great how Chars secretly the most important person in the UC. Him and the students effectively initiating the hostilities that are used as the casus belli for the war, him being the one to allow revil to escape, etc. He really didn't get to do much that effected the world in 0079 except kill kycilia. So it was a much needed boost to his character. They made Garma too gay tho. No way Origin Garma ever touched pussy.

I just wanted to know why it looked so shit.

>guntanks
They had guntanks which were basically just bigger tanks, not on the same level as a mobile suit. Minor retcon that really doesn't mean much, they could've easily been swapped out for regular tanks.
Zeon gets a new type of weapon (zakus) so of course they can mop the floor with feddies now because this exact same thing happens in 0079 with the Gundam on the feddie side
>Char taking out multiple guntanks
He's a newtype so of course he can do this while in diapers. Amuro does this to hundreds of enemies in the original as a 14 year old with no military training hopping in a mobile suit for the first time.
You could say it's because the Gundam is just so good but then it comes back to the
>zekes just get clubbed endlessly and the feds face no challenge whatsover?
Sounds like "it's okay when the original old thing does it, I can look past it, but this new thing? bad writing"

Someone post Char's spicy shoulder please
Anonymous No.23560698 [Report] >>23560768

>Amuro does this to hundreds of enemies
Amuro got carried by the Gundam being able to tank any damage up until he met a Gouf. He barely knew what to do and had to flip through the manual in his first sorties. It wasn't until after weeks of constant battles that he started being a one man army.
Char just got into something he should have no experience with and started blasting soldiers who kept missing the gigantic target all at the same time.

>when the original old thing does it
The original old thing did not do it. Feds didn't have much of a presence (as a standing army) in the original until they got GMs and after that they traded rather evenly with Zeon suits.
Anonymous No.23560768 [Report] >>23560784
>>23560698
So the Gundam can just tank anything, even the Red Comet, but then the Gouf for some reason gives it trouble because it has an electric whip? But it doesn't matter because he wins anyway and continues to steamroll everything. A single 14 year old in a giant robot. But a kid taking out 3 other guntanks crosses the line? Most of its not very believable, but we suspend our disbelief because it's fiction and these are the protagonists
Anonymous No.23560784 [Report]

Yes the point was that the Gundam was a near superweapon when it was deployed, also Amuro was a teenager, and a mechanical autists, not some snot nosed brat who hasn't gone through puberty and whose legs shouldn't be able to reach the peddles.

I don't care much about mech retcons.
Origin feels goofy. A bit of humour and slapstick is fine and even enhances the experience, but the OVA just doesn't stop making Dozle look like an idiot.
Sayla, Ral and Hamon were the saving grace, they prevent it from being completely unwatchable.
Episode 1 is probably the worst episode to start on, the recap at the start of next episode is unironically better. There's so much stuff that feels like a pulpy action movie instead of Gundam, which isn't necessarily bad, but it baffles me to see people unironically treat it as some serious political thriller or something.
Origin, like most prequels and spin offs, tries to do callbacks, references and unnecessary connections that makes the world feel smaller. Yashima helping Mass move to Texas colony, Char going to work at Jaburo and meeting Lalah, WB crew being in the same class, Hitler line etc.
Charma academy episode was great, except for the rebellion that is framed as the starting point of OYW, that was retarded.
Somewhere in the middle I had a thought that Yas might be doing LOGH instead of Gundam and being really bad at it.
Newtypism is barely focused upon, this in turn ends up hurting Kycilia 's character. The story frames her as a schemer who wants to prolong the war and might have been the reason for Sasro's death (poor dude barely got any screen time). Her role should have been given to Gihren, it makes more sense and gives a more compelling narrative.
Operation British was devastating, the little segment of a couple in the colony enhanced it.
I enjoyed the friendly rivalry between Tri stars and Char.

Because bandai has been looking to replace drawn mecha with 3d for a while(for a number of reasons, including costs and the dwindling number of 2d animators who can into mecha.) And whatever studios japan uses for their 3d animation suck balls. Still better looking than hathaway's 3d though.

Regarding Char, he is such a non character for first two episodes. I would have liked more to see more of little Casval.
I didn't mind original Char and Casval resemblance, but it should either have been a small plot point or explained in detail. It ends up in the middle where Char seems like a psychopath for screwing over a boy he knew and lived with for some time.
Char here is just so bland, he doesn't screw up much, barely gives any intresting quotes and is less introspective.
The attempts to make him feel threatening falls flat on face and ends up feeling like some parody.
Somebody described Origin as a fabricated story with some truth narrated by Quattro to Kamille on one long day at Argama. I would agree, it's the only way to make sense of this mess.

char is a decently strong newtype, he's always been able to do things like operate the zeong and psycoframe at a high degree, and sense others like kamille and scirocco

it's his piloting skills that are questionable, he was completely lackluster in zeta since just about any named character gave him trouble and the only enemies he could consistently kill were grunts. then in the manga that takes place in between periods like CDA and MSV-R and moon gundam, they keep glazing char's combat abilities to no end

Char was genuinely cool for most of 0079, and towards the end when he was losing his shit you had to respect his tenacity for getting that run back against Amuro when every other Zeon officer got clapped within three encounters.
Origin Char feels like some chuuni tryhard's idea of cool, and I think part of the problem is that he doesn't have a rival character to keep him in check, so to speak.

I wouldn't mind seeing some fighters and tanks getting clubbed cause mobile suits being superior is the premise of the entire series, but the author invented shitty versions of guncannons just for them to get massacred 0-12.

The series ends with Revil giving his "Zeon is exhausted" speech but it was really tone deaf compared to the entire series where Zeon took almost 0 losses getting to that point.

I too have been watching it over the past couple of days and I really don't see qhat the fuss is about. It seems fine to me. The mobile suit development is a bit retconned but that's really it. Dozle is a bit goofy and the animations seem a tad dramatic but it's pretty solid overall.

that moon battle was too much Zeon wankery.
It'd be one thing if Zakus and Bugu were able to show the difference between a mobile suit and a bipedal tank/artillery like the guncannon.
but no they didn't, instead of using human-like agility to avoid the guncannons, they just straight up made a beeline and used brute-force.
no finesse, no nadda.

I never even thought of it as newtype shit, just them taking the Charwank to the next level because that's what the Origin anime seemed to have been made for.
They may have taken it a bit too far there since the guy had that very vague resemblance to Amuro and they were desperate to give him a "win" over him after Char has been his bitch for 50 years

Yeah, Yas’ take on Char in the Origin is far more of a conniving sociopath than Tomino’s. Tomino Char is prideful and pretends to be conniving "all according to keikaku" guy but ultimately acts upon his emotional impulses more often he’d like.

Did anyone read the Manga? Origin is an alternative telling of 0079 written by Yas. He changed some stuff like the Federation having Guntanks and Guncannons before the OYW. Besides the ending, it mostly follows the plot points of 0079.

I would like a more original timeline accurate version of the early events of the war.
>The simultaneous attacks on Side 1 and 2
>Operation British shown as a tough battle but where Zeon dropped the colony Iffish on earth
>The battle of Loum being a cataclysmic fight for survival for the EFF and showing the Side 5 being destroyed in the crossfire.
>Nukes being used indiscriminately
A lot of the supplementary material made the opening of the One Uear War seem apocalyptic.

Origin is based on the flashback arc of the Origin manga and the problem persists there even with Amuro around. As much as I like Yas, his version of Char is simply too lame, one-dimensional, and cartoonish compared to Tomino'sl

the animation adaptation changed some of the stuff around so that it could be inserted as a prologue to the original TV series similar to how Hathaway had changed some things to be a sequel to the CCA animation instead of Beltorchika's children. So, the guntanks and guncannons that were in the Origin Manga became Precursor/Prototypes to the ones in the TV series.

That almost made me drop it. I could accept it if it was really primitive and slow but it's almost the same as the og version except the guns do no damage to Zakus. Same for the Guntanks. They should have used mobile workers or Zanny variants as fodder mecha before Project V.

Even in the Origin manga, Guncannons with beam rifles are somehow considered inferior to Zakus with bazookas.

Hard disagree about Ral. The OVA makes him look too much like some noble-hearted knight instead of just a charismatic solider doing his job. Too much of the myth, not enough of the man.
Which reminds me: they managed to fuck up Kai too. Kai Shiden, a cowardly, sniveling little shit at the start of 0079, is somehow the leader of a band of delinquents and has enough balls to break into a secret research facility with a hotwired bulldozer. Bullshit.

I think that was the whole point, to make him seem like a psychopath. It fits the whole character arc, basically his innocence died as a child and he's now willing to kill anyone in his way on his path to revenge.
>>23560403
He wasn't piloting the tank, he was firing the gun right? I thought those dudes on the bottom were the ones actually driving it. And it's possible it has some sort of auto target or lock on system. I think the point of the scene was not so much that this kid is an ace pilot, and more so this kid is willing to pull the trigger and kill people. Again representing that death of innocence and birth of a man who will do anything to achieve his goal of revenge.
A mary sue is a character with no flaws, being a sociopath is a pretty glaring character flaw.
