I've seen so many arguements and shitposts about deconstructions and I still don't know what the fuck a deconstruction is.

Deconstruction is what assholes call whatever juvenile crap they like mixed with cynicism and/or self awareness because they're embarrassed about their hobby.

Jacques Derrida is like an actual guy who wrote papers.

Its stripping an idea or a story down to its bare essentials, and then asking yourself how much of these bare essentials can you change or rearrange before you lose the core identity of the idea.

/m/ has been REALLY dumb lately.
Anonymous No.23560689 [Report] >>23560701
>>23560678
That's not how it's used in modern parlance and even if it was you couldn't prove that definition of the idea was behind literally any /m/ work

Evangelion deconstructs the mecha genere when they ask what if the giant robots weren't mechanical at all. It is breaking down a core premise of the genre and asking yourself without this can we still make a mecha show.

Shinji getting into the robot and then not acting heroic and his conflicts with his father is breaking down and rebuilding a lot of Amuro's character arc imo.

That is a kinda okay intro to genre deconstruction. I get why people assume deconstructions are usually cynical, because post-modernism is usually associated with cynicism for some reason, but you can make a sincere deconstruction of something. A good deconstruction usually done out of love for the genre they are trying to examine.

The robot in Astroganger isn’t mechanical either. He even merges with his little boy buddy.

I never watched it but that seems to be a super robot show, played straight, and not post-modern. Evangelion is a post-modern show and the fact that the robot is actually his mother and that isnt revealed until later is like the entire crux of the story.

>at all

Robocop/androids are still partly mechanical. Anno was just inspired by Ultraman, Thunderbirds, UFO, Gundam and more. Nothing was broken down and built up or whatever.

>Shinji getting into the robot and then not acting heroic and his conflicts with his father is breaking down and rebuilding a lot of Amuro's character arc imo.

Again its just inspired and his own take on Amuro and probably a bunch of other stuff.

It's like saying pineapples on pizza deconstruction of pizza. No its just a weird take on pizza. It was built upon preexisting works like we have seen since human history and probably even before recorded history.

No, you're not getting it. Its like saying we have cheese, dough, and sauce, if we take away or rearrange or replace any of these things, then is it still a pizza.

Mecha isn't even a genre to begin with. There's no "premise," it's simply indicates the presence of something mechanical in a story

Deconstruction means a critical analysis of a work minus context and how much context you can remove before the work loses its inherent meaning, but stupids have co-opted the term to mean, "Anything that points out that this genre does this thing a lot."

Madoka is a deconstruction of magical girl.
Akibaranger is a deconstruction of sentai.
Evangelion is a deconstruction of super robot/Ultraman.

They actually aren't, but that's what stupids say they are.

Yeah, dude, lets call Jacques Derrida a fucking idiot instead of trying to interpret what he meant.

I can't stand that people think all post-modernism is just edgy made up bullshit instead of admitting that they themselves might be ignorant about something.

Post-modernism serves to only destroy the believes our forefathers told us that hard work equals truth. Now, you can just spew whatever the fuck "deconstruction" means because you believe what you say is correct without referring to what it actually mean.

For real, the more I watch/ read / delve deeper into a thing, the more I don't think 'deconstruction' as pop culture puts it is actually a thing at all. At the end of the day, trends/ ideas are cyclical. You'll have a period where people just want simple good guys beat bad guys hot blooded robots, then people get bored and what edgy morally grey world, then people get bored and what something else while still having some core aspects of giant robots etc. Then at some point people just want simple hot blooded people shouting while piloting giant robots again.

Furthermore, in the context of eva at least, Anno was also very notably influenced by Nausica - the god warriors are very much biomechanical entities, right down to them causing the big calamity event in their story (7 days of fire) vs the evas and the whole third impact thing. So it's like, analytically speaking, Anno wasn't even attempting some kind of literary statement on the nature of mecha, he just thought it was a cool concept and made something that was just a background in nausica into the main plot of his work.

Largely correct, with the addendum that the unwashed masses left to their own devices naturally gravitate toward heroics. It's only with the influence of the academic and intellectual class that things ever are pushed toward the gray(said influence isn't always malicious either, as it trends this way even in healthy societies). However said influence can only last so long before that natural tendency supersedes any artificially created demand. Lemmings can only be pushed one way for so long and so they turn back toward heroics again. Once their thirst for heroics is sated the masses become easy to influence again. Hence cycles.
