I think what I miss about old UC Gundam was that it always had a sort of "Retrofuturism" where it looked back as it looked forward. The original always had a WWII vibe that I loved. Even when it deviated for that aesthetic it still picked another era to look back to, like how 08th looked back at the Vietnam War.

Gwak doesn't look back at anything. I think that's why it bothers me.

What is Stardust Memories looking back towards?

Well, originally in the 70s and 80s shows they were just making the world look like the then present day, aside from the parts strictly necessary for the setting. So, you had all these cities and overall style that seem retro now, but that wasn't the intention at the time.

Like you say there though 08th MS Team seemed to go for deliberate retro aesthetics, but I'd say that was the big exception. Just look at 0080. It clearly left behind any 70s styling aside from reused uniform designs.

Top Gun

Anon it's not retrofuturism, it literally IS futurism, just from the late 70's-early 80's when we though floppy discs were the peak of computer technology.

The MS Era art book is probably the worst thing to happen to the fandom. Fags like OP think it’s canon.

Top Gun wasn’t even 10 years old when Stardust was produced

I didn't realize there was a rule about that, you should complain to the creators that it wasn't 10 years old yet

Americans are always looking to complain about something.

My argument is that I’d hardly call something whose reference is less than 10 years ago retrofuturism. Complain to OP, not me.

OP only mentioned 08th MS Team and 0079 explicitly, and 0080 implicitly by the attached image. Where did he mention 0083?

The WWII aesthetic was never present in the original show, it was retroactively applied in supplementary products.

Gquacks aesthetics suck because the characters look like pokeblobs and the mobile suits all have ridiculous thunder thighs or are way too skinny ugly EVA knockoffs because they are. Horrible choices of artists for Gundam.

It’s quack.

Are you OP? It’s pretty fucking clear it’s supposed to be called Quack.

Why do you think the show has so many duck heads?

My favourite form of futurism that only manages to feel more distant as time goes on.

Blame Star Wars, really Silent Running. This started the "Used Future" aesthetic that unfortunately permeates to this day. Can you imagine SW, Trek, Gundam, really anything if it continued with the classic look?

The curved organic designs of Zeon mobile suits, mobile armor, and ships were my favorite and still are.

All of the Federation stuff looked like crap, well, except maybe the Gundam RX78, mostly because it had a simple design and looked like it had a car engine grille on it's chest.

You want me to learn from a Japanese person, who doesn't know English, trying to badly pronounce English letters? Lmao.

Do you also think Hot Dog is pronounced "Hottu Doggu" ???

You make me laugh.

Star Trek is extremely sleek for a post-SW western sci fi. That goes for every iteration of the show, I can’t think of a single ST example of not-sleek.

When the Japanese show is using English language and letters, then we go by the rules of that English language.

Just because the show is called

"Mighty Mecha Hot Dog"

Does not mean we call it...

"Might Mecha Hottu Doggu"

Only fascists make good mobile suits, which is why all the Titans have drip, and also why feddie mobile suits got better as the federation got more corrupt and authoritarian (Jegan, Re-GZ, Jesta)

If you go back far enough with Katakana, all the G and K sounds were swapped so it was Hot Doc. It's also why so many Muv-Luv romanizations were originally in that style like Professor Kouduki instead of Kouzuki.
