The Wing's pointed shield is as iconic to the Wing lineage as the buster rifle, and I'm happy that the WZ EW now has its own shield nowadays, feels like it completes the look in a way that it didn't have previously

I want to like the GP02's shield, since it's big and bulky and intimidating looking. But the fact that they installed a cooling system in it that would compromise the MS itself when damaged, was such a stupid fucking decision that it completely negates the entire point of a shield in the first place. Like, it's a fucking shield, you're supposed to use it to block attacks, the whole point of a shield is that it takes damage instead of the MS so that the MS can continue functioning, why would you put critical components in it?

it's not a mobile suit meant for the frontlines

The entire purpose of the GP02 is to nuke something and not die. The shield needs a cooling system in it so it doesn't melt. That it's a vulnerability in longer MS to MS combat is irrelevant because it's not supposed to be in that situation in the first place.

I'm especially fond of those with built-in beam cannons

kou being able to poke a hole in it is stupid contrivance to end the duel, the shield should also be slathered in beam-resistant coating at a minimum so a beam saber tip can't critically damage it with a single quick poke

that said you might also say that the GP02A was only meant for zoom in and deliver the nuke with its massive thrusters. if it had to stop and duel an enemy MS, either the nuke mission was already complete or failed\aborted already. the GP02A needing to defend itself during its own theft is not something that was planned for in the project and is therefore an edge case.

It would be quite reasonable for it to have been and also for that to have boiled off from all the hard radiation it just absorbed.

The blast probably stripped away any possible beam coating on the shield.

Herp, the shield stab's in episode 2. Disregard.

Could've just stuck it in the vents and it would've been reasonable. A lot of gundam's sillier "that worked?" moments would be fine if they just slightly tweaked where things get hit or what with.
