Exactly. It clear the Director had an interesting idea. But his execution was very poor.
If he studied cinematography and lighting, then he would know that objects and dip in and out of darkness. It doesn't make any sense for the characters to be fully lit and visible by the city lights, but the mecha to be shrouded in darkness.
I'm not sure how good modern animation software is at simulating lights and light bounce (seems like something Nvidia Ray Tracing would be helpful at), but the director messed up.
I'm Honestly surprising no one at Bandai told him at test screenings that the battles were just too dark.
