Watched this a few months ago and it really was up there in terms of absurdly lazy writing. Literally ALL of all the drama shit that dragged out the entire series could've been resolved if the main dude just spoke for like 5 fucking seconds. But every single goddamn scene just had him stammering and then closing his mouth until the scene changed to something else

Also that final stretch was all time retarded
>military empire enemy shows video of girl dying and reviving during treaty signing between school and trade guys
>"THEY'RE ALL IMMORTAL MONSTERS"
>trade guy leader immediately says "oh okay I'll take your word for it, we hereby are now allies with the empire instead and everyone is this school is designated an evil monster enemy of mankind that shall be exterminated"
>proceeds to shoot up the school for the next few days and the show never bothers to address the fact that not a single one of the hundreds of kids got up again
I could MAYBE have given them a fraction of a pass if it turned out the trade guy leader was part of the evil overlords, except they showed him being brought into their fold the next ep

I could go on and on about how much the second half of this show infuriated me so much. Just nothing but wasted potential, with a hero who never moved past his martyr complex.

At least it gave me one of my all time favorite heroines in mecha. So of course the writers tried to screw her over in the second half as well.

Insulting is the word I'd use to describe it. They consistently just made people act in the most nonsensical ways in order to brute force the plot along the way they wanted it to go, which wasn't even good to make it worth it. If that school massacre stuff had happened 5-10 eps sooner it would've been the first anime in decades that I'd have just dropped, but with only 3-4 eps left I just powered through

That is a good word to describe the second half.

Heck, the treatment of Saki and Haruto’s relationship I found to be extremely insulting. Their interactions were some of the best parts of the show, and the writers just separated them for a majority of the second half.

Which is sadly a hallmark of the writing of Ichirou Okouchi, given that he did that same thing to Kallen in Code Geass R2.

>Heck, the theater date in episode 11 honestly had more chemistry than all the scenes between him and Shouko.
Nope, that was Haruto trying to talk about it and Saki ignoring him to focus on her wants. There was nothing there, the entire reason Haruto hung out with her in the first place is because he felt she didn't care about him and would beat him up if he went berserk, when she showed she couldn't he moved on to L-Elf.
Anonymous No.23576110 [Report] >>23576134 >>23577266
>>23575823
Man, the fact that he only went to L-Elf because he would beat him up when he went berserk after Saki decided not to is unbelievably infuriating. She shows that she truly cares for you, but you don’t want that cause you don’t want the curse to hurt anyone, even though she’s not being forced to shoulder your burden, but is willingly allowing herself to. Talk about making your protagonist ungrateful.

Saki finally realized just how much the curse actually affects him, and decided to shoulder his burden. Heck, the whole reason she turned him down in episode 12 is because she didn’t want him to be burdened by guilt and be with her based solely on that. Also that’s why she didn’t want him to apologize.

There was a lot of potential for them both to grow through their relationship, as the seeds where there in the first half. Heck, it ant the very least led to Saki growing as a character And again, they all get dropped in the second half, which angers me to no end.
Anonymous No.23576134 [Report] >>23576174 >>23576238
>>23576110
There aren't, because Haruto never cared about saki at all. And saki only liked the idea of Haruto but not actually him, it's why she was fine with him losing all his memories, the things that make him him.
Anonymous No.23576174 [Report]
>>23576134
I mean, he did at the very least care enough to make that promise with her at the end. And the fact that Saki was willing to shoulder his burden and didn’t want him to be with her based on guilt says a lot.

Really, it was a wasted opportunity to not have those two grow into having a relationship. The fact that he kept holding onto Shouko, despite all the evidence showing that he and her would be better able to grow via moving on from their childhood crush was very frustrating.
Anonymous No.23576238 [Report] >>23576279
>>23576134
Also, the manga pretty much states that Saki’s feelings for him grew to become genuine. Heck, even after hundreds of years, she still held onto her love for him.

Again, the potential for great character interaction and relationship growth was right there, but Okouchi dropped it for the sake of melodrama.

At the very least, the manga gives a bit of a glimpse as to what the anime was sorely missing.

Well hey, I’ll take what the manga had over what the show had, given that, like I said, the former fleshes out and expands on something the latter failed to capitalize on.
Anonymous No.23577049 [Report] >>23577170
Man, the more I think about, the more melancholy I get.

Once more, melodrama was prioritized over everything else. I get the sense that the reason they didn’t do anything with Saki and Haruto’s relationship is because it would cause the latter to grow past his self-loathing martyr complex, which was driven in part due to his feelings for Shouko (him not feeling worthy of her love due to the curse).

And again, I have to stress that it’s not as though he didn’t care for Saki at all, or that the latter only saw him as a way to get fame. By the end, the latter grew to truly love him and the former did care enough to make a promise with her.

Little bits like that I think showed was more chemistry compared to him with Shouko and the like.

But heaven forbid stuff like this gets in the way of melodrama.

I don’t see why you think that. He was the only one to show concern for her when they were back on the module while she was still behind enemy lines. And that’s also not mentioning everything else I brought up.

If he really didn’t give two rips about her, he wouldn’t have made that promise with her and the like.

>>23577266
Heh, yeah it seemed like they were trying to go for the fujoshi crowd there.

Thing is though, I honestly think it prevented him from growing as a character. Having him so reliant on L-Elf, just because he’s the only one he trusts to knock him out of his curse and the like, kept him from actually becoming more independent.

Heck, once L-Elf became emotionally compromised following Lieselotte’s death, he was little more than a piece of fabric in the wind, not pushing anything forward.

And heck, that’s one reason why I felt him having a stronger relationship with Saki could’ve helped. Imagine if he decided to go and save her himself after seeing her execution, given everything that they shared and the like. Now we have someone who doesn’t just wait around for the next plan, but who is actually making an honest effort to save his friends.

But that would get in the way of the melodrama, wouldn’t it. Especially when you can instead have him angst over Shouko some more.

You're not being very convincing. Plus, if that was all the promise was for, then holy crap does that make Haruto even more unlikeable.

I'm just going by what I saw in the show btw. Which, granted, wasted a lot of potential moments the two could've had by separating them for a lot of the second half.

Course, it could also be because the two growing their relationship together would've finally let Haruto move past his self-loathing martyr complex.

The reality is that Haruto didn't care about saki. You can pretend all you want but you are making the mistake that what you feel exists in the show when it clearly doesn't.

I'm looking a bit deeper into what I saw, granted. But it just means that I see potential that was lost on the writers.

And all it does is also make Haruto look like even more of an self-loathing idiot for not seeing all the obvious signs.

And I still contend that he did care for her, if only just a little. For you to say that he didn't care about her at all is to ignore many of the scenes they shared together. Maybe not romantically, but at the very least, they considered each other friends.
Anonymous No.23578035 [Report] >>23578600
>>23577443
Heck, during the scene in the theater, Haruto was able to see straight past Saki’s comments that she was just reciting her lines, telling her that she wasn’t alone anymore.

So I don’t understand where you got the idea that he didn’t care at all for her. Again, maybe not romantically, but at the very least, he sees her as a friend.

Now if only the show could’ve actually made use of the potential that was there between the two of them.

That was a huge problem with it. Especially given how well the two connected. Heck, even when he returned, he was the only one to show concern for her.

It all comes back to him being too reliant on L-Elf to come up with the plans of attack. L-Elf was so focused on saving Lieselotte that he only did the bare minimum when it came to Saki. And as a result, Haruto completely folded when L-Elf became emotionally compromised.

I know that the fujoshis love to ship him with L-Elf (Coffee x Milk as they call it). The thing is though, is that I honestly think it prevented Haruto from actually growing as a character, as he remained dependent on L-Elf the whole way through.

It's way I feel him having a stronger relationship with Saki could've helped him actually develop.

But heaven forbid Okouchi does something that doesn't allow for melodrama right?
