Make it a tank-type mobile armor, instead of a glorified pseudo-MS with larger armaments.

1. At the minimum double its size, and plate it with capital ship tier armor, so that it's at least as durable as a MS-sized tank. Then when you put it up against overwhelming firepower, the Gundam and Guncannon can use it as mobile cover. Hell, even add a vehicle compartment to the back so that it can carry troop transports, assault teams, and the like.

2. Mount multiple point-defense vulcans all over, so that it can shrug off missile attacks with ease. I would also say I-Field generator to protect it against beam attacks, but that may be going over the top, especially since Zeon didn't actually adopt beam weapons until well late into the war.

3. Upgrade the back cannons to capital ship style beam cannons with the same firepower as a Salamis' beam turrets. This way when the enemy brings ships like Gaws and Gallops into the fight, the Guntank can shoot them down.

If it's going to be called a Guntank, then sure as hell it'd better be as powerful as a tank upscaled to MS proportions.

You can’t. Tank type mobile suits like the Guntank and Hildolfr were obsolete the minute they rolled off the production line.
There’s a reason the Zaku tank is more of a field modified stopgap than a production model.

What makes Guntank idea so resilient in universe?
It would be understandable if it was just a one off, but you have:
>RX-75 Guntank
>RMV-1 Guntank II
>RMV-3 Guntank III
>RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Type
>RX-75 Berge Guntank
>RX-75E Local Type Guntank
>RTX-440 Ground Assault Type Guntank
>RTX-440-B Ground Assault Type Guntank Type B
>RMV-3M Local Control Type Guntank
And then there were Loto and its descendants GF-Tank and Guntank R-44.
Honestly, it feels like there are way more direct descendants of Guntank than Guncannon and Guncannon actually got an active niche in MS combat.

I expect basic literacy from people that reply to my posts. I know what tanks do and done historically, my question was about tank-ish robots in a universe, where giant humanoid two-legged robots on battlefield isn't a retarded idea, but a main way to wage a war.
If you'd ask me, I'd say that the real reason why Tomino hated G-Fighter isn't because it is toyetic, but because G-Sky and G-Bull undermine the giant robot premise by being actually good traditional weapons on a supposedly changed battlefield.

>G-Sky and G-Bull undermine the giant robot premise by being actually good traditional weapons on a supposedly changed battlefield.
>G-Sky
A gimmicky machine that replaces cockpit and twin beam cannons of a large fighter-bomber with a smaller docked aircraft and the legs and lower torso of a mobile suit. IIRC the G-sky has the Core Fighters missiles and whatever weaponry the G-fighter has, minus the turret. So the G-fighter now has to carry the mass of the Gundams legs internally (for no apparent purpose) AND it loses the G-fighter's primary weapon
>G-Bull
brother this thing is retarded. It has the exposed engines of the Core Fighter facing the enemy. These cannot be armored. It has TWO cockpits. It has the torso of, head, and arms of the Gundam that has to lug around which serve no purpose in this configuration other than to hold the Gundam's shields, which if it were in G-fighter configuration it wouldn't need because it would be an agile aerospaceplane. It lacks the mobility of the Gundam, it lacks the armor of Guntank, and is overly complex for no apparent reason.

They were right to replace the G-fighter with the Core Booster in the movies. The Core Booster is a much more effective mobile weapon, has beam weapons, and makes doesn't have to lug around mobile suit parts for to be a stupid tank or a shitty plane.

He doesn't die in the draft. He makes out of the Gundam's wreckage, gets through some Zeon soldiers then personally kills Gihren with a gun, and then makes it back to the White Base crew in a scene similar to the actual ending of the tv show.

There's a reason for it though, see that lower drawing, which shows the arms can be lifted by the cannons, giving them a higher firing angle (which could be combined with cover).

>Translator's note: For some reason, many Japanese fans seem to interpret this version of the story as ending with Amuro's death, like Tomino's novels. I've tried to translate the key passages as faithfully as possible, and to me it seems at best ambiguous. After finishing off the Gigan, the wrecked Gundam flies out of A Baoa Qu before it explodes, and is greeted by cheers from the White Base crew. As Amuro loses consciousness, he says he will play with Lalah "tomorrow," which seems tonally similar to his last line in the animation.

It could go either way. As >>23584891 says, Amuro physically escapes A Baoa Qu in the Core Fighter to safety with the rest of the White Base crew. He loses consciousness, which you could interpret as just being completely exhausted from the battle and everything else that has happened. You could also interpret Amuro's thoughts with Lalah to imply that (Amuro thinks) he's dying and willingly submits himself to the afterlife with Lalah. You could interpret "tomorrow" as being any indefinite length of time if you also believe ghosts persist indefinitely and therefore any normal descriptive unit of time is meaningless to a consciousness living in purgatory\between planes of existence who will never age and could wait forever to reunite with Amuro.

In other words, it's exactly as open an ending as it needs to be. Don't explicitly kill off the main character in case they get offered to create a sequel, and the ambiguous fade out drives fan discussion, at least for a while.

That's not meant to be a higher firing angle, it's meant to use the arms as a makeshift crane, which is dumb.

this is gundam, they will invent scenarios to take advantage of this, for some stupid fucking reason all buildings are perfect height to use as cover and forests are always tall enough to hide mobile suits yet never dense enough to prevent a mobile suit from walking through it

a guntank using the cannons to raise the gun arms higher to fire at an enemy from behind cover isn't even the weirdest scenario in animation

Much like the kajillion Zaku variants I think it's the EF equivalent of trying to solve certain problems and as such only making a tiny handful of particular prototypical units, only to abandon them for reasons related to performance, cost, complexity, or mounting evidence of obsolescence. The EF is run by old farts, so it'd also make some sense that they'd try to keep the idea alive even if evidence was mounting that it wasn't salvageable.

For land based battles it makes more sense than any guncannon variant, much more stable firing platform, it doesn't have to engage against attacks from every angle and at the desired engagement range it's lack of any close combat ability is just fine. It should never have been allowed into space.

The swordfight? Nah, not in there. They'd have had a mobile suit battle in ep 50, with Char protecting the Solar Ray long enough for it to be fired on the Federation fleet. He then limps back to Side 3 and gets promoted to Admiral for his troubles in ep 51, then finally ends up helping Amuro take out Gihren in ep 52
