Zeon remnants on Axis in partnership with Anaheim Electronics created Gundarium Gamma alloy. The Rick Dias was the first mobile suit to have its structure and armor built out of Gundarium Gamma, so Zeon being Zeon called it the Gamma Gundam.

Really all they have is the feet, but for Zeta it was clearly supposed to be some kind of offshoot of the Dom before they retconned in it being some weird failed Gundam.

There's two vague possible lineages for the Rick Dias, and it's not impossible for it to be a mix of both.

First off is the Dowas, which is generally considered the "final" version of the OYW-era Dom, turned into a next generation grunt MS. According to some lore somewhere, Axis sent some mobile suits on a convoy to deliver a finished model of the Dowas to Anaheim Electronics as part of some secret deal. The Titans find out and attempt to intercept the delivery, but fail. The implication is that the Dowas ends up being dissected by AE and becomes the basis for the further improved Rick Dias.

In a flashback chapter of Zeta Define, they go a little more crazy. Char meets with Anaheim Electronics in maybe UC 0085 or 0086, finalizing their plans for their new equipment. Char and friends are satisfied with how the Argama is taking shape, but are now asking about new mobile suits, specifically Dom-style MS. AE just so happens to have a spare GP02 on hand that's been modified with newer parts, and Char takes it for a test flight. He's not really happy with the basic design, and has further requests.

Anyway, the rest of the chapter plays out by having a newer younger employee take over the reins of the project from the old guy, and she develops the Gamma Gundam prototype based on the changes and feedback.

Serious answer? They don't exist. The "gamma" refers to gundarium gamma, which is what it was made with. After the oyw AE was experimenting with luna titanium alloy and developed 3 versions of their own. Gundarium alpha was basically just the same luna titanium that the RX-78-2 was made of, Gundarium Gamma was a light weight version that retained like 90% of Alpha's durability at a lower cost, and Gundarium beta was a test version made while developing gamma that wasn't considered good enough for whatever reason.

When Zeta was made, none of these side story Gundams existed. The Greek Alphabet is an AE specific system anyway so more likely than not Alpha is Grandpa Gundam and Beta is The MK-II which the AE was aware of.

I mean let's face it Anaheim are a bunch of shady bastards there's no way they'd actually purge the GP project data in any meaningful way, they definitely made a show of doing so for the Federation but kept plenty of backups and hidden caches of leftover parts and whatnot, and then once the Federation weren't looking just hauled it all back out and did what they did previously with the GP04/Gerbera Tetra and just create new exteriors for anything using the GP project data

Theyve done a good amount over the recent years of trying to show that designs don't just always get shitbagged instantly and some good ones receive upgrade packages to keep them relevant. The oldest and probably most notable example of this is the Jegans in F91. Even though they got mogged by manley MS, they were still vastly upgraded Jegans from when they first rolled out around CCA. The Barzam is a more modern example of them rewriting it so this ostensibly good machine didn't just get completely forgotten and remained relevant into the early F91 era with upgrades.

I think Tomino's idea was that(he needed to sell more toys) engineering tools would have advanced so far that once you understand some basic techniques for MS design then you can easily just come up with a design over the course of a couple days and then push it into production for at least a complete prototype in a month or two. Both the design process and production process would become much more intuitive with alot of tools to help you along, sorta like how AI is used to write emails for you rn. That's how I rationalize it at least, but you also can't let the Gryps conflict mess up your perspective to much as that era is MEANT to be an explosion of MS development. Before this it took at least months for the federation and Zeon to make designs and setup production lines and afterwards new mainline MS production slowed down a bit, while prototype designs were still shat out

I agree, and in another thread someone shared images from a manga that went over what were basically Zeon's 3D printers that they used to churn out new designs in the OYW. Can't remember what it was called though.

I juts like my personal headcannon setting where the OYW was the One Decade War and Zaku IIs are the equivalent of T72 shitboxes used by all sorts of remnant factions

AE code named the proto-Rick Dias the Gamma Gundam because of the alloy and then went into the Zeta project and I guess just started giving MS that derived from the "Gamma Gundam" greek letters and it stuck with the rest of Anaheim's various Gundam lines up to the Xi Gundam. Penelope is Greek adjacent since it's named after a character from The Odyssey
