>It's literally the greatest story ever told through Video Game media
Unique yes, better than average yes, greatest no.
"Here's some lampshading exposition! Well, aren't you intrigued by the word salad?"
"And then, a disaster happened!"
"Here's some more lampshading exposition! This will turn out to be a huge nothingburger by the way!"
"Actually, the latest plot so far was just a build up for this cool anime moment"
"And then, a disaster happened! Man I love a sense of urgency kicking status quo in the nuts. Hopefully you're not bored of this!"
"Hey, about these teammates. Remember they had some story around them during their recruiting arc? We neither, but at least we'll have characters related to them appear for exposition and plot device reasons once in a while"
"And then, a disaster happened! But this time I'm going to wrap it up in a small text dump with a few animations. Just don't ask how come that's enough to cover what normally be 1/5th of the gameplay plot"
"Someone we didn't flesh out just died, isn't that impactful?"
"It'd be much more dramatic if you weren't stopped from eating from this tin can. :)"
"No, Lacan, you don't need therapy. Here, I have some brain nanomachines just for your case"
"I think this was supposed to be a mystic or Jungian reference, but I'm not sure if I got it right so I'll at least make it look like it's awe-inspiring"
If we don't count VNs as games, then, off the top of my head, even SRW originals and most of Deus Ex entries had more coherent, engaging, unexpected stuff going on.
Takahashi should've doubled down on reincarnation romance instead of piles of grandiose drama. Now then it could've been sweet and the greatest.
