You're leaving out the talented auteur who was so depressed that he literally reinvented the mecha genre by deconstructing it. Before Evangelion it never even occurred to anybody that forcing a teenager to pilot a giant murder robot would be bad for their mental health. That's why in the original gundam series amuro ray is a happy-go-lucky deviant who's always cracking jokes and trying to catch a glimpse of Fraw Bowe's tiddies but then after evangelion came out Yoshiyuki Tomino realized that mecha could be better so he designed gundam wing with the idea that you'd have to be an indoctrinated psycopathic "human weapon" to pilot a gundam at such a young age, and then later created Gundam seed which is a modernized re-imagining of the original series in which amuro ray is replaced by kira yamato, a young man who quickly becomes traumatized upon being forced to pilot the strike gundam then later develops a messiah-complex as he realizes that the only way he could possibly be so awesome at everything is if he's the actual second-coming of the lord jesus christ.

For me it's how before evangelion, everything was just a cheap monster of the week toy commercial where the makers put in unnecessary sex scenes, but evangelion took a critical lens towards it and told them that merchandising and sexuality is disgusting and they shouldn't buy action figures or beat off to anime girls.
