/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General
-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Expensive? Who cares about expense, I'm pointing out that no matter what you use you are going to have a giant "stick out like a sore thumb" thing in the middle of nowhere. It would probably be even worse if it's a robot. Thermal's only counter is getting enough layers between you and the thermal. Giant robots probably hand wave thermal away with some half hearted explanation but IRL they would be giant walking heat signatures no matter what.

It's more expensive than a normal high grade because it's really big.
The build is also really fast and easy. It took me a few hours to get it painted and put together. It's great for learning to cement parts since it's mostly clamshells. There's no difficult seams to work on but there's plenty of easy ones.
Pic related, next to a normal sized master grade. I wish there was a master grade zock.

The machine spirit agreed with me when I asked it to justify using camo
> “Camouflage is pointless — everyone knows where the battle is happening anyway.”
Even when both sides know the general battlefield, concealment provides *tactical ambiguity* — the enemy may not know *where* or *when* a mobile suit will strike. In real-world warfare, stealth and camouflage are used precisely for this reason: to delay detection, gain the first strike advantage, and survive longer. Knowing the battle zone doesn’t make visual concealment irrelevant.
> “It’s too much work to paint them or add camouflage systems.”
The cost of camouflage is negligible compared to the benefit of reduced detection and improved survivability. Even simple adaptive coatings or environmental patterns can drastically decrease visual and sensor visibility, buying precious seconds that can mean mission success or failure. Modern militaries already employ adaptive camouflage; scaling it up for mobile suits is a rational evolution.
> “Camouflage won’t help because mobile suits are huge — you can’t hide something that big.”
While total invisibility isn’t feasible, *disruption* of visual and sensor signatures is. Camouflage doesn’t make a unit disappear; it breaks recognition patterns and delays targeting. Advanced cloaking technologies, sensor jamming, or optical refraction fields could blend large silhouettes into complex terrains or electronic noise, making detection difficult until it’s too late.
> “Camouflage won’t matter because radar and sensors will pick them up anyway.”
Camouflage extends beyond visual disguise. Stealth-oriented mobile suits can incorporate radar-absorbent materials, heat-dissipating armor, or ECM (Electronic Countermeasures) systems to reduce infrared and radar signatures. The same logic behind stealth aircraft (like the F-35 or B-2 Spirit) applies — not total invisibility, but *detection delay*, which is tactically invaluable.

The first, and easiest to make, should be Dragonar-1's Cavalier-0, which should also come with weapons missing from the loadouts of the other High Grade Dragonars (D-2 is missing the double-barrel gatling gun and leg missile launchers and there's no way some insane people will take off said missile launchers off their assembled old kit D-2's legs since they're glued in place, and D-3 is only missing the 3-muzzle hand rail cannon).

But I think the other bit of changpla seethers are snapshitters who struggle to build the shifty recasts, because it requires 0.0001% more effort or ability than a bandaislop HG. I have a friend who's a snapshitter (love'em like a brother but he can't build and seethes at those who can), and he built one HG Changpla RX-78 and fucking threw it away before finishing because the forearm didn't fit well. Modeling and greebleslop are 2 sides of the same coin. There is no such thing as "building a car model from raw plastic", they always use existing parts to speed up the workflow and then lie. Even big budget Hollywood production like Starwars used bunch of Tamiya kits to detail up the model they made from scratch. And keep in mind, Starwars was what ignited the love for modeling in Japan and indirectly gave up to Gunpla.

Started working again on my Ordine Moderoid after a long pause. The wings took a lot of time as I had to strip the paint and primer 3 times like a retard. Made plenty of mistakes with this kit but I'm happy to be basically done.

You're right, there isn't really anything desirable here. Maybe the Strike Freedom or Destiny wings, or the G-Line. The HG G-Self Movie is also stupidly expensive, even for coming with two backpacks.

A bunch of my F91 2.0's joints developed fractures. I bought this around release and haven't really changed poses with it, it's just been standing in a neutral pose. Both ends of the knee joint on both legs and one of the VSBR joints have all gotten the same style fracture. I've got two new F91 kits so I guess I'll see how they hold up, definitely going to give a little light sanding to these connectors this time.

By the way, my F91 1.0 from its release is still "fine" by comparison, though it's lived in a plastic bag for several years now.

What do you mean by engineering? If it's detailing, they are pretty good. Some kits have fully modeled engines and all sorts of acessories. They obviously aren't articulated (unless you buy the RC kits, which I have never tried) so their parts won't be moving around.
And what kills me about Bandai of that era is that the problems seem to be actual mistakes in the project. I was assembling a Thunderbolt Ver Ka the other day and had to look up a guide for some unrelated steps and the guidemaker had fitting issues in the same spots as me.
And then you randomly have shit like my HG Asshimar from 2006, which has great fittings while having little wobble despite being a weird transforming kit.

Yeah I'm part of the local IPMS, and have been graced with many "blessings" of kits and their like 300 dollars worth of aftermarket parts which really is bruteforcing through purchasing more intent based products. I don't see a huge difference between buying tons of aftermarket PE, metal barrels, tread replacement, decal sheets, wheels, accessory pieces, soldiers etc and buying a Pbandai version of this or that or the MGEX instead of one of the 4 MGs or whatever. Sometimes though, the armor way tends to lead to being happy with being ABLE to build X specific thing and having acquired the ability to do thing, without ever doing the thing. Covid got me so much free plastic I didn't want and have to sit on for a while before selling to not seem ungrateful.

Guy remarked about not just building what's in the box, and some people buy aftermarket or in the case of boomers, nearly all do. This isn't a shock or strange, a lot do the same in gunpla, generic MSG accessories from Koto, all the minus molds or decal sheets, photoetch. None of that's wrong or bad but sometimes the way the boomers do it is so much like the Premium Bandai consooooooomers where it's buying something predone by someone else, and a very small minority do work themselves with pla plate, plastic rods to scratch build even things as simple as shovels, tow chains, etc.
