I don’t like the Gundam’s V fin and think mobile suits should look more like military machines than giant knights or samurai

I do like GM types for having more "realistic" headpieces but I think that if you're optimizing for "practical military" your machines end up looking more like battlemechs or VOTOMs
"Suit of armor" mecha is what Gundam is built on, it's like saying you think Macross mechs should be less like planes

But there's plenty of other media that has what you want, why not go for those? What other things do you want out of mecha besides the suit style? What does Gundam have, but those other titles don't, that is keeping you from switching?

It would be more fitting if they actually looked like military machines and Gundam has many militaristic designs for their mecha, the Zaku was a good start, but you can obviously tell which ones were aimed at selling toys

Tbh i love it when silly robots are portrayed as real killing machines. That's what made Zeta so damn good in my eyes, the ms turned the goofy factor to 100 but the maturity scaled with it. People saying we need our robits slathered with reactive armor and drab if they want to be taken seriously are idiots. Look at 40k, tons of silly bullshit all over the shop but it's all so compelling because it takes ITSELF seriously. I doesn't need the space marines in camo and using guided rockets to let you know shit's going down. that netflix show with the cg Zakus was probably the most atrocious gundam stories in a long ass time because it soooo wanted you to take the damn thing seriously. Gundam is pretty good actually and there has not been a bad anime series set in Universal Century so far.
