What did /m/ think of it? I just finished watching it earlier today.
I thought it was a lot of wasted potential. The basic premise and the fact that the conflict was based around Japanese religion was a really interesting angle. The mecha designs were also very solid, not necessarily the greatest designs ever but much better than you'd expect from a series that seemed to focus more on the budding romance between two girls. The mecha action was great too, very well animated and they were the highlights of each episode. Most of the cast was great outside of Himeko and Chikane as well, particularly the male MC Souma and his rival Tsubasa. If the show had just been a standard mecha show and removed the yuri aspect I think it would be an above average show, probably not the most memorable mecha show out there but certainly in the upper tier of mecha shows.
What fails for me is that Himeko is incredibly annoying and her romance with Chikane is forced and unbelievable because they don't really have great chemistry. Since the show deals mostly with their romance, it's quite unbearable watching their scenes when everything else is so much better.

Oh and I forgot to mention in my post but the soundtrack was pretty good. The opening in particular is fantastic, as are the visuals in it. The mecha fight music was pretty good too, outside of that it was kind of forgettable but still. Props for having an amazing OP.

But yeah I agree, the robots are pretty solid and the character design is pretty great for the most part. Soundtrack is good, the rape was hot. Himeko is kinda annoying and the male MC is just kinda bleh.

I mean yeah, yurislop will be yurislop, but the protagonist was hotblooded as fuck and his arc with his brother was really cool. I am just trying to imagine what the show would be like without the yurislop, and it would be way better.

Most shoujo manga follow a simple formula
>protagonist is a normal uninteresting girl
>primary love interest is an abusive rapist
>secondary love interest is a selfless protector
>protagonist is torn between logic and lust
>she eventually chooses the primary love interest because he makes her heart go doki doki
Kannazuki no Miko follows the shoujo story structure except the primary love interest is female. And there are cool mechs.

I meant by removing Himeko, who is objectively dead weight until the last two episodes and is a completely uninteresting character that just hinders the plot from progressing, and just making it a standard love story between Souma and Chikane. You'd need to make some serious edits to the story obviously.
Honestly even keeping Himeko and just removing the yurishit ending by making them sisters or something would be better. I know the manga apparently reincarnates them as sisters and they go on some incestuous yuri shit fantasy but I meant from the get go, they would become two sisters forced to kill each other much like how Souma and Tsubasa had to kill each other, would be a cool thematic parrallel. Chikane might just not like Souma because he's a simp in that reality rather than wanting to cuck him and rape his osananajimi.
I understand its following yuri/shoujo manga conventions but the mecha stuff attracts a shounen audience. MAL lists it as a shounen series, probably because of that. I know a lot of /m/en who have watched it because it was a robot show primarily, that's the only reason I watched it because otherwise I'm not too interested in yuri as a genre.

Nobody wants a story about Souma's boring ass. It's always funny to me how people complain about one thing and then want something far worse. No one cares about the show beyond the yuri because with it you just have a generic mech show with a generic protagonist. If you took out the yuri you'd get Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora which was boring as hell. You'd also have to completely change Chikane's character and she's the most memorable part of the show. You just want a different show at that point.

I'm gonna come in with the opposite opinion. I think it should have fully and completely committed to insane toxic yurislop, not because I think it would have made it "better" but because there would have been more to talk about if they cut out the parts that had to appeal to non-yuri watchers and just went insane with it.
As it stands, the show is just pretty damn boring for most of it.

Out of the three main character he was easily the most endearing and likeable, and if he was given more development and focus with his tragic backstory and his rivalry with his brother then I am sure you could turn him into a much more interesting character. I must admit that I just love hotblooded characters in general, and Souma is far from the worst example of such a character. It's hard to believe his seiyuu barely worked on any other robot shit, he did a great job.

I don't think I do, I just think the mecha should have been the focus of the show more than the really crappy and forced romance between Chikane and Himeko. Despite being the focus of the series it still felt rushed and unbelievable. Himeko genuinely had better chemistry with Souma anyway, and that's even pre-rape scene.

I don't think it's the opposite opinion at all, what you are saying is that it should have chosen its focus audience better which is also what I'm saying. I am simply arguing it should have been more of a mecha show than a yuri show because the mecha part was much better than the yuri part. I mean look at pic rel, a design that good deserves better than being a sideplot in a really shitty romdrama.

He was generic as hell. He even looks generic. Like he climbed out of a harem anime. Just compare him to his brother. He has the blandest character design in the entire show. He has no motivation beyond he and Himeko's bland romance. There are way better hotblooded mecha protagonists than what we saw of him. Chikane was the most interesting character and moved the plot. If she wasn't around, no one would remember the show at all.

Yes but that doesn't mean he's a bad character and not worth paying attention to, the glimpses we got of his actual character beyond "me protect Himeko" were enough to get me endeared towards him. A lot of my friends who watched this show were pissed off that he got dumped at the end, you wouldn't care if he was completely devoid of character. And yes his design is generic compared to his brother and even the other male characters on the show like his adoptive family, but I still find it more than serviceable.

Meanwhile Souma and Himeko have a much better connection to each other.
I guess my issue is that I can easily imagine a few aspects of this show being changed and the show becoming much better for it. I have no issues with romance, or even lesbian romance, I just think this show failed to make it believeable and failed to make me want that outcome. I hated Himeko and didn't particularly like Chikane, ironically I liked her more after she went evil because it made her more interesting than just being a boring semi-rapey nepobaby.

He's a bad character because he has nothing going for him. He's generic as hell. He has no grand plans. He's not pushing the plot forward.

I didn't want to root for them. I didn't find it endearing. It didn't spark anything because both Souma and Himeko are bad characters. They're both bland. I don't feel emotion for them. It was the same boring shit you see in most self insert anime. Himeko was basically a shoujo protagonist but instead of 2 men fighting over her it's a man and a woman. How does Souma have a better connection to Himeko when the entire backbone of the plot is about Himeko and Chikane's connection? The whole plot falls apart without them.

That's what I wonder as well. The scenes with Himeko and Chikane fail to meaningfully develop any chemistry or bond between the two, yet at least in my opinion Souma and Himeko's relationship felt like it developed naturally through their shared history. It's a major flaw that despite spending 75% of most episodes detailing Himeko and Chikane's relationship, I still couldn't believe Himeko fell for Chikane over Souma. And furthermore I found myself really enjoying the 25% of each episode not dealing with Himeko and Chikane's terrible relationship.
