Original setting rebellious teen underground post war surplus mech fight tournament would have been a good setting for a show (albeit a bit derivative of the last one we had)
Alternative post OYW political intrigue would have been a good setting for a show
Cramming them both together and then also sprinkling it with a bunch of half explored newtype stuff and a multiversal magic show twist at the end just meant nothing had time to develop.

Nothings happening, nothings happening. Something about a rose. Nothings happening, unearned romance tease. Northings happening...it's over. A lot of people in the audience look pissed.

No fucking way Quess has actual pathos as a character and her infatuation with Char and Amuro is actually explained as stemming from her terrible relationship with her father and mother and she has a foil in the form of Hathaway and actually experiences genuine character development at the end.
If your character motivations are only "hormones" and "impulses" and nothing deeper then theyre too flimsy to justify why these would get them to go into life or death situations. Of course Machu could have had a real motivation that is slightly barely implied at the beginning and the end but theyre too busy jerking off with more 0079 references to actually develop that into a full character arc, so all you get is points A and B and Machu is carried between the two by pure retard energy.

And Machu's infautation with Shuji is explained by the her poor relationship with her family and her general apathy to life as a whole. The Newtype bullshit really seems like the first she's actually felt something real in her entire life, but how GquuuuuuX handles Newtypes is an entirely different conversation. I'm not saying Machu's a deep or really interesting character, I'm just saying it was fun following a complete lunatic.

Yeah it honestly drives me fucking insane seeing people say how they wish the nostalgiafaggotry got more screentime. None of what they do with these characters is interesting aside from Challia, but that's because he's not even the same fucking character from 0079 anymore so I don't know why they didn't just make him OC donut steal who happened to Char's best friend/gay lover. The politics of a victorious Zeon aren't interesting at all, Kycilia and Gihren act so preidctably there's really no intrigue in their actions beyong Kycilia building a Cthulu gun. Dozle's still dead, Degwin still gets killed by Gihren, but at least Garma's implied to be out there with Icelina. For some reason the Earth Federation gets no exploration whatsoever. Sayla comes out of fucking nowhere to be Queen of Zeon at the end and the Charwank is the worst it has ever been in this entire franchise. The show's a complete fucking mess, I still liked it but I'd never say it's actually good. I'd say it should have been an entirely new universe but this would never happened if it wasn't an AU for the UC.

I mean, on the pure technicality of the wording, you're not wrong, but she still got less character at the end of G-Witch than Machu had from the very beginning of GQuuuuuuX.

That's unironically more applicable to Suletta. Machu never really tied her worth to anyone and had her own journey, meeting different people, growing her own worldview and challenging those that are close to her.
