There's other improvements, e.g. integrated magnetic coating, presumably a better ractor, beam rifle, thruster output, etc. The Chobham armor presumably would not impair the suit with its improved characteristics; like the normal RX-78-2 it'd be intended to rely on its beam rifle, bazooka, etc. with the head vulcans usually acting as a backup/utility tool. The wrist gatlings aren't meant to necessarily be a primary weapon in this sense, they're a reserve/secondary weapon for if shit gets hairy. Chris was not Amuro or a newtype or anything and in 0080 we never really see the Alex use its beam rifle in actual combat, so ultimately none of this potential was fully realized.

The gatlings make a lot of sense in-universe too. If you're reviewing real world data from both Amuro and GM pilots, you're going to be finding that the head vulcans can barely scratch the paint on a Zaku and they're tossing away/losing their handheld equipment all the time. So if you have the room and the weight, it makes sense to try giving a mobile suit a beefier integrated weapon than the head vulcans. Those are still fine for anti-infantry or light vehicles, missile interception or exploiting an exposed sensor or something but the arm cannons offer actual anti-MS firepower even when the suit is 'disarmed' of all other equipment. No time spent reaching for them either, a pilot could easily say, create an opening with their beam sabre then immediately unload with the same arm's cannon to catch their enemy by surprise.
Later on, stuff like the Jegan's shield missiles or the Nu's secondary beam sabre mount would show others looking at the same problem from different directions.

With the attempted secrecy around it, seems like it was for physically safer transportation and storage while still allowing it to be piloted. Maybe they also figured they wouldn't have a Newtype fed pilot assigned to it. If it's burdened, could mean an Oldtype would be able to cope with the extreme sensitivity of the controls

Wasn't the kampfer described as having paper thin armor? For all we know the jump from 60mm to 90mm really just increases damage by 50%.

The NT-1 was originally supposed to be the G3. Look at the insignia on the rocket that takes it off earth in episode 1. The Zaku II “Kai,” GM Command, all of these were originally just revamps or redesigns of the classic suits. That is, they were just stick Zaku and GM. Gunpla division forced them to change things.

While they may not be the same size cartridge, 90mm is what the zeeks switched to later in the war as well over their default 120mm machine gun, so you can assume its got acceptable penetration against the weaker zeon MS armour.

That's just the number 63, and it's on the shuttle fuel tank, not even the cargo shuttle itself.

When you say "originally" it was maybe true at the very beginning of production, but partway through they axed that idea but fandom bullshit kept the idea alive like a zombie. All of the MS designs in 0080 were already decided to be variant models before the the OVA even premiered. Concept art from 1988 December 23rd shows the Gundam already being labeled NT1.

The Federation didn’t have Zeons newtype knowhow so they just threw a bunch of stuff at the wall to see what made a better mobile suit. There were some misses, but a lot of hits and it worked out well enough in the rnd

The NT-1 wasn't really a newtype project until they got data from Amuro sometime after the white base landed on earth. It started under the G-4 Project earlier in august before the original gundam show started. The G-4 project was just the four branches of the federation armed forces developing new MS technologies. The space force was working with Augusta Labs to make a next-gen gundam, and when they saw Amuro's data they changed the project to make a newtype MS. The air force made the transforming Gundam GT-FOUR, the army was making a heavy weapons unit, and the navy was making an underwater MS.

It probably wasnt the full thing though, or like a pseudo movable frame. Either way it set the direction of all future MS. It seems to get new features every time a new toy comes out.

Nah, it was originally the 4th gundam. That's what the 4 emblem on its shoulder stood for until it was retconned into a reference to the G-4 project. The old 1/144 gunpla manual called it the 4th Gundam developed during the OYW because the Gundam Unit 4 and 5 weren't introduced until the next year and displaced the NT-1 as the 4th unit.

This is somewhere that Macross has an advantage for worldbuilding, I think. Anybody wanting to stick their dick in the well planned out tech progression has to do battle with Kawamori's autism and so far nobody has dared since Macross 2. Hell the hero fighters from both Frontier and Delta owe most of their new shit to the unseen YF-24 that pioneered a bunch of innovations but was also a complete fucking mess and never made it to serial production as a result.

MS Era also uses the 0080 designs, though in that case at least it seems reasonable that a team made from 0080 people just knew the designs better and felt more comfortable working with them.
In SD Gundam's case, maybe just because that's what they were already tooled up to animate. Easier to ask for a bit more 0080-like footage than anything else if they're already in production.
