I liked Unicorn, why do people here seem to hate it?
Banagher is a good MC, he gets a lot of shit done and he isn't too whiny, Marida and Audrey are cute and also get a lot of shit done, and Riddhe is a fun schadenfreude victim. I don't care much about the UC retcons it presents or the implications of Char's ghost or whatever the fuck, those scenes of Zeon remnants activating all over the world for one last job were really cool and the OVAs are full of cool moments, that's all I ask from the franchise.

Serious question. What makes a protagonist too whiny?

Because different people have different opinions, and this board is not a hivemind. There are people that like and enjoy the OVA, and others that hate it. Just form your own damn opinion and ignore what other people think.

People are too stupid for it, dead ass. Which is rather dire when it really isn't some intelligence test or anything.

The secret is that there are no whiny protagonists, only viewers who are precious snowflakes and get offended because a dude expresses his feelings or struggles with emotions. It's weird.

unicorn is one of my favourite entries in UC, and Marida Cruz is my favourite character in gundam.

I liked it and it was my first UC Gundam, so I didn't even have the context for a lot of it, but it still told its own story well enough to be enjoyable. And it made me go back and watch previous Gundams and now I appreciate it more.

I dislike it because I think the story is shallow and relies too heavily on retcons to make its story work which in my opinion results in the story not really fitting organically into the wider setting which wouldn't really be a problem for me if the show worked as a stand alone product and didn't rely on the viewer on having watched previous UC shows to understand what's going on.

I liked the animation, the designs, and all the cool action scenes but without a good story to tie it all together it just kind of falls flat for me. It's too bad really because I liked the characters and most of them got good moments. However outside of those moments the story is just go from point a to point b then it ends with a twist that doesn't really make sense when put in the context of the other series. It just makes rewatching it outside of certain character and action scenes boring for me.

Banager is a pacifist to the bone. I really don't like this populist trope. If you're so soft, then don't get into war mech.

Unicorn is a prime example of the whole is less than the sum of it's parts. It's got great art, great music, honestly great characters overall, and great individual episode plots. But the overarching mystery and chase for Laplace's Box ends up just being a wet fart, and the resolution to the conflict with Full Frontal just kind of fucking sucks. It does have some of the stuff I love the most out of the whole franchise though. The entire fight at high altitude with the Garuda is one of my all time favorites, the entire sub plot with Marida and Zinnerman was really great as well, Captain Otto was also a gem, I wish he got a few more scenes sprinkled around.

It kinda contradicts the timelines set in other works like F91, and people who were already invested in that obviously aren't going to like it too much. And it is set immediately after CCA, which brings in a ton of lore issues that were raised in that movie.
And, as others have pointed out, it's conclusion was very underwhelming. The whole thing they were chasing around was the original charter of the Federation, but it really isnt that relevant after 100 bloody years of people not knowing about it, including decisive moments like the OYW. From a legal point of view, it just doesnt make any sense.
Anonymous No.23602700 [Report]
Unless it's your introduction to the timeline, it just kind of feels like a cliffsnotes review of the Tomino directer UC entries that take place before it. Very much a 'continuity eating itself' situation. Except with characters and plot lines that aren't nearly as fleshed out, and this weird conspiracy theory angle that honestly feels wholly unneeded.

Banagher is really boring as a protagonist. He's just there to get ping ponged around by the various factions and his final takeaway is soredemo. He can't even conjure up a good argument as to why Spacenoids shouldn't tell the Federation to fuck off and refuse to trade with the Earth. It's even worse in the novels where the Federation are raping and pillaging the colonies uncontested but that's fine because soredemo.
Marida and Mineva are fine, though again Mineva doesn't really have a good argument why Full Frontal isn't right except that he's not muh Char. Marida dying felt like an unnecessary fuck you.
The action looks cool, at least.

No it's bad and boring because Universal Century Charter having a clause giving space-adapted human priority in government literally comes out of no where as the Universal Century Charter wasn't a thing before Unicorn.

Also as >>23602688 said it isn't even relevant as a threat to the federation by the end of the story.

you only say that because you are trying to have it fit in the UC

Wouldn't say poorly written but it's more that the plot and characters stroke his dick too much. He'd be inoffensive if it wasn't for that.
Anonymous No.23605197 [Report] >>23605215
>>23602086 (OP)
It's great on the surface level but if you turn your brain on for it and especially think about it in terms of the UC as a whole it's got major problems
Shitty dull MC, MORE Charwank, builds off a non-canon trash timeline, reason for the whole conflict and "world-changing revelation" is an absolute nothingburger, tech that is 10 generations more advanced than UC series that take place after it and most importantly of all the newtype magic bullshit taken to the umpteeth degree

It could be something more concrete, like proof that elections are rigged, that anaheim pulls the strings, that the zabis were a federation inside job, I dont know. Being a weapon would be stupid as well.
Having it be a piece of law that was passed in an international congress that was somehow secret is just stupid on many levels. Legislation is public, so it only makes sense that it is an original draft or something.
Now think about it, what do you think would happen if they found the original draft of the US constitution that never got approved and it stated that 50% of all land in the country belonged to indians?
>>23604136
I think the Universal Century Charter being a thing makes a ton of sense, given that the Federation is, well, a Federation and it needs a founding legislation.
Anonymous No.23605490 [Report]
>>23605387
The idea is that the federation is fickle and something as small as forgotten 100 year old treaty could shake the balance of power and provide spacenoids a more firm ground to stand onto when it comes to negotiations and legislation, it's really not that deep so I don't understand why everyone misses the point so hard.

I say it's the writer, but Fukui was restrained when working on this adaptation compared to the original novel source material, if you want to know the real damage this guy could had caused, just look at the Yamato 2199 sequels...
