The fic is great, one of the best... except for one thing; Lyra pretty much gets a hamfisted get-out-of-jail card at the end. So, she gets re-united with her human family, and she pretends to have forgotten what she did the past 16 years. But instead of going the difficult way, the plot invents Discord and he stomps around the human world and turns Lyra back into a pony; this allows her to tell her father the truth, get back to Equestria and enlist the Elements of Harmony to save the day, and Celestia turns her back into a human. So there's no real consequence here. It would've been more interesting if Discord put a seal on her, so Celestia couldn't turn her back, so only the Elements can, and she has to convince her friends to go along - earn her ending. Alternatively, the ending itself; so the USA's east cost got decimated, the world economy ruined by an extradimensional being but all is dandy? No? The glow-in-the-darks would hunt down any lead. What's this? This group of people who trashed a barrier and were with those ponies are tied to a girl who was the long-lost daughter of an author? Who suddenly came back out of nowhere and whose paternity test had a significant margin of error? Oh, look, another world! Ever watched GATE? Time to give Equestria democratic freeedooom!!!! So... uh... Chloe, would you like to be a pony too before we sever the connection to Earth forever?

Added, why didn't her human dad hire a private investigator to find out what happened to his daughter the past 16 years, only for the PI to have a really strange cold trail in Des Moines? i mean, look at it from her parent's perspective; daughter you thought was dead reappears out of nowhere with punk-style green hair and golden eyes, and pretends she can't remember a thing. Wouldn't that ring alarm bells? That would add character to the human characters, too. But instead they just shrug it off until the Discord plot convenience happens

Here's a rewrite for Anthropology: After Lyra finds her human family, her father hires an expensive private investigator to figure out what happened to his daughter. (Assuming the worst, like trafficking). The PI talks to Lyra, goes into her past, and comes to a complete dead end in Des Moines, gives up after a few months. Tells father this, but notices that Lyra has a very bright inhuman eye color and that her 'dyed' green hair has been growing.

Noticing something is very wrong and going off a hunch, he asks the family to do another parentage test; now it returns 98% certainty of parenthood, which is a really weird figure. Meanwhile, Lyra has been having vivid dreams about Equestria and turning back into a pony as she did in the original fic. Noticing something is off, the PI asks a friend to do a test on Lyra's DNA, and figures out that there are autosome paires which should not be there; equine.

Confronting Lyra about this, her parents don't believe it, but she admits to have been a pony for 16 years, showing off her journal. Not that there's much to deny, as her tail started growing back (magic fixing the body) and the pony part of her is taking over her human part. So Lyra now has to find a way back to Equestria (once turned back into a pony) and hope Celestia can fix it, while finding peace with her human family in case she can't.

Meaning; Lyra has to sacrifice her humanity to save humanity. She does it. After Discord gets stoned again, everyone is confused why Lyra is still a pony, and the gang decide to take her shell-shocked self back to Equestria. Unfortunately, very pissed off glowniggers show up as they are about to go to Equestria, and they decide to rescue her little sister with her. It really doesn't do a great job exploring or dissecting humanity as a collective, to a complete outsider, someone who is functionally extraterrestrial. I reread it recently and I always felt like it could've done so much more to explore both Equestrian society and American society, because it never really touches on the rest of the world and it seems like Lyra's perception is mostly America, which is fine really. There's so much potential it's hard to approach so I get it. But Lyra being so shocked by meat eating is dumb as fuck. War was glanced over, but meat eating was treated like it was completely foreign despite all the predators in Equestria. That's like the one thing ponies probably would understand. I feel like it should've explored human creativity and artistic things, since that's something ponies also appreciate. He wrote a lot of Lyra in the band but doesn't really explore how a pony would appreciate or find similarities in human music.

Yeah really good. It took me around 8-9 months to work through it. I think most people try to read it through quickly like with most books and get burned out (taking year long breaks reading isn't unusual), but the book is too long and heavy for that imo. Read it when you are in the spirit, and don't feel like you need to finish a chapter in one go (one of the chapters is quite literally a quarter the length of the Fellowship of the Ring).
