So this is a bit of an idea I have for the background and don't feel like I have to keep it close to the chest cause I don't know when I'd tell it.

When Vinyl was starting out as a DJ, she set up her own low range radio station where she found some listenership. The budding DIY radio station in a campus closet ended up being visited by Neon Lights, who was an aspiring DJ on public broadcast channel. He found Vinyl after some investigation and immediately leapt to recruit her as talent. Vinyl knew everything about the radio and music, except how to make money. Neon was there to fill that gap. He didn't care about music, radio, or any of that while he was working as a host, he just wanted money and was willing to work for it. So with Vinyl as his star, he did all the background work to promote her into a mainstream icon and brand. She has no idea what was going for the most part. She did whatever she was put before whether it was gigs, appearances, advertisements, and promotions, she mostly did what she was told to. Though the power couple did raise eyebrows, Vinyl said her only love is for music and Neon's was money, which kept their relationship strictly professional, as they never met outside of work, but they did get into some of the most heated arguments down the road.

It's very self implemented, but it just feels weird for her and she hates how old she is. When her favorite song she remember coming out comes on on the oldies station, it's over. Like people work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and act like that isn't taking up a quarter of their life. Who you are during that time is also worth while to explore who you are. Vinyl has a good temperament for music that makes her both very appealing, while also professional. She knows music, but also likes learning music. She knows enough to bridge gaps, as well as meeting the music where it's at. She is professional enough to dissect meaning from songs, but also knows when music is just fun. This is a generalization, but mostly the saying goes is that unicorns will make up a song for an event and earth ponies will make up an event for a song. Unicorns use magic and music with a lot of intent, while Earth Ponies will use magic and music for fun. A lot of earth pony magic goes unrealized, because there wasn't an intent or notice for it, so there is no one to measure it and all attempts to are bunked, a la Twilight and Pinkie.
Vinyl is very good at realizing both temperaments of music and gels with both, which is both friendly and professional enough.
Vinyl is also easy on the eyes for Tolltavia too.
But unfortunately, Vinyl isn't doing well to adjust Tolltavia to society, but just to her. She thinks she's making progress to help Tolltavia, but doesn't realize that Tolltavia is only adjusting herself to meet Vinyl's expectations around Vinyl, because Tolltavia only cares about Vinyl in Ponyville and some friends. She's not becoming more flexible as a person to work with in an orchestra setting or doing well with strangers, she's just increasing a pool of people she listens to because she likes them.

If Vinyl did formal schooling for music theory and the like which if I remember right she did do some schooling vs Tavi’s innate prodigy talent, then it’d be cool if she did her dissertation on how different races approach music and was pretty knowledgeable about it.

If those long praying mantis arms frequently wrapped around Vinyl’s body are any indication, Tolltavia has become pretty attached to the little DJ, hopefully she’s not getting worse by leaning on Vinyl too much, but then again it is very cute and a lot of prodigies had some eccentricities to go with their talent. Though Octy may be stuck doing solo performances if she can’t integrate just a little.

Well for pegasi, their minds are hyper analytical and tuned to seeing things as they are or what they wan them to be. Pegasi have to do a lot of in real time adjustments when flying to recognize wind patterns, air pockets, and fast pace maneuvering, which grounds their mindset to be the most atheist of the pony species focused on physical sensations, making for decent musicians for an ensemble to adjust to the orchestra or band members.
I like thinking about this sort of stuff and exploring ideas. I think I should try making green of this, because I've been trying to write this out in a novel form, but stall out hard going back and forth making sure there's enough supports for the long standing theories that happen and ensuring nothing is an exposition dump. Just get to the fun parts.

She made music her passion and delved into enjoying it in every way possible (except playing). Which makes it sort of a lack luster cutie mark story of getting a cutie mark for listening to music instead of typical playing an instrument. She did go to college, but it was solely to operating radio and engineering. Her being the host was something of a necessity that turned into something else when she was setting up her DIY radio station in a closet. One of those incidental success stories.
So it's more of Vinyl's life time of untrained experience vs Tolltavia's hyper specific training and prodigy schooling

Well part of the story is centered around her being the head to figure out more about this uncharted territory of Earth Pony magic, because most earth ponies are like Pinkie in how these things "just happen" and are super unintentional. With Octavia, it can be stimulated to happen and apparent in how it's manifesting by using the music as a measurable sort of symptom of what effect is taking place, which makes her not only a musical asset, but a magical anomaly to be studied, if only she wasn't so confusing for layponies to approach. Vinyl can is unique in how she can parse out the meaningful parts of the music and the fun stuff that makes the music flow better and what is creating outcomes in the song that create magic. Some chords by Tolltavia make magic and others are made to make a song good. I have some ideas on how to go about this sort of magic-science part of the story, but it's not fully fleshed out.
And this is the modern story of the current era. There are pieces of this puzzle that are set to the creation of the universe and major events that happened during the mythic era and whole bunch of deep lore schizophrenia.

Certainly an interesting read to come back to. I like when writers put this level of thought into their stories. I can't say I've put nearly as much thought into the mechanics of the races and music and all that jazz when it comes to writing my own little stories. I'm more ingrained in the interpersonal relationships than the wider-society stuff. The most thought I've put into anything is how alcohol affects each of the three races.
I wouldn't worry about derailing the thread. I'd rather a unique in-depth conversation than silent bumping and typical shenanigans. (Part of why I'm sad last thread died when it did.)

I’ll give a quick outline of what’s bouncing in my head so you get the general idea

If you’re not cool with any of that I totally understand and wouldn’t want to write it anyway if it made you uncomfortable.
In general I’d also like to ask how close the two are and how they feel about their relationship romantically as I don’t think it’s been discussed in depth somehow.
Like how overt is it? Do they just fool around, do they pretend like nothing is happening and don’t acknowledge it despite being pretty intimate, or is it fledgling with an awkward touch here or a little too long look there?
Does Vinyl feel some guilt about the age difference or feel like she’s taking advantage of Tolltavia’s lack of social awareness and youthful naivety by doing this with her or does she not care/tries not to think about it, or is she really turned on by it, or is it a combination of things? And is she leading this aspect of their relationship or letting Tolltavia kind of just do what she wants?
Is Tolltavia aware of how she makes Vinyl feel and the implications behind it, does she know it’s a little taboo, or is she acting primarily on instinct and just doing what feels right/good?

For Octavia it's a crush she can't interpret. Boiled down from her perspective, it feels to her like frustration, a desire to find mutual respect, and a desire to get physically close to Vinyl. At first it cute and awkward touch. She'd never had much physical contact with another pony for most her life, so she's pawing at the concept for the first time to initiate it. As time goes on, this game of battleship gets a bit closer each year. Vinyl doesn't really get this quirk, so she just considers it friendly weirdness and just goes along with it. Tolltavia doesn't know where the line is as she continues to probe different hugging feeling contact out, and the further she goes the more uncomfortable Vinyl feels, but doesn't want to call it out. Over time though she just gets used to it and sort of ignores it, which just gives Tolltavia to push boundaries more and more as Tolltavia starts feeling more addicted to being intimately close, which pushes Vinyl to be more deliberately ignorant.

Cute and a little sad how Tolltavia doesn’t even realize how touch starved she is, or even how to process it. Good thing Vinyl is really squeezable and huggable.
I see she’s taking the boiled frog approach, invading Vinyl’s intimate spaces little by little. She can make bigger, riskier gains when Vinyl comes home drunk too.
I can see how Vinyl is making Tolltavia worse by getting her addicted and attached to her, getting possessive of Vinyl as her feelings deepen and get intense.
The switch from a friendly greeting hug to an open mouth kiss with extra tongue must have taken a while for Tolltavia to work up to, along with the transition from innocent couch cuddling to intimate horny spooning and groping.

I think I'll post a little more lore, since I feel like I missed a conversation last thread.
For me, Octavia's Grandfather had three kids: Octavia's Uncle (the eldest), Octavia's Dad (the middle), and (the youngest) Fiddlesticks. Fiddlesticks is almost 15 years younger than Octavia's Dad when her Grandfather remarried a woman from the Apple Family. Symphonia is Octavia's cousin from her uncle. Although the Apple Family is usually very welcoming, Octavia's Grandfather and his side of the family are from a backcountry place called Blackwater, a bayou by a mountainside remote from Equestria where the land is strange and unkind, where only the desperate, resilient, or crazy go. Only bad things come from that place or so the stories go. Originally the county was unclaimed Gryphon territory where trappers and hunters would come seasonally for some game, hunting gators, bears, and deer. However, some earth ponies migrated there looking for land to cultivate which was leased to them by the Gryphons, since they are only interested in seasonal hunting rights and were alright with being catered by ponies who would tend the land for them. After centuries, it was just some boonies area called Boggy Water that was known for very resilient ponies, but there were tall tales of odd sorts of creatures, like the Dancing Lights, the Talking Tiger, and the Timber Mare. Then the Blackroot Cult, a group lead by an earth pony shaman, was at its apex during a doomsday scare which pushed them to doing blood sacrifices to the tree spirits. They were ran out of Equestria proper into Boggy Water. When there was a followed up pursuit of the cult, the locals refused to join in, because for centuries they were neglected by their Equestrian counterparts. The cult simmered down and integrated with the locals after the heat was gone, only adding to the animosity the locals from there suffered. Thus the name Blackwater stuck for another century. However, ten years ago, a blue grass singer from Blackwater got multiple songs to hit the top of the charts using local songs, notably the number one hitfor two weeks, Timber Mare. The hostility was gone, but the prejudice didn't die out. Octavia's Grandfather is the only standout exception for achieving success in Canterlot for his background, but the family still is discouraged from naming its roots. The Apple family readily accepts Fiddlesticks as one of their own, but the rest of the family is usually discouraged from associating with them.

How this plays out for Tolltavia's modern interactions with the Apple family hasn't been decided yet.

Actually, the cult sort of dissipated over time, with a few of their druidic customs surviving, but nothing ritualistic happens much anymore. Just some flavor at the different religious aspects between species. Earth Ponies believe that Faust created the pegasi and unicorns, but Earth Ponies made themselves from the earth to join in. A lot of Earth Ponies believe in spirits that come from below and the natural world, unlike Unicorns who believe in giving themselves to higher power and heaven.
Unicorns have had many mystery cults that gave themselves to higher powers, but the one prevailing religion was one predicated on Faust and Harmony, because it didn't have that much political associations with any one group which made it a big tent, while also having a lot of songs and parties which brought in Earth Ponies and Pegasi to join in.
Earth Pony shamans are more mystical, and Blackroot was an exception for most druid cults. The shamans usually center around consulting natural spirits that have no name and gazing into spirit world for nonlinear answers.
