There's always something to add. You should definitely use references. Other artists make it textured, add more complex geometry and highlights, so it doesn't look plain and flat.
But for now, I think the cast shadow by her horn is too dark, or there should be some other places as dark as the cast shadow.

the position of the light, the reflections, and the shadows all seem to be in the right place, which in itself is already a good thing if you do it from the start of your pony art learning. so good job on that!

like someone else said above, refs do help when it comes to giving an idea of how to add texture to certain things, or how a specific body part moves, etc.

personally, I have hundreds of brushes I collected throughout the years (I use Photoshop, and yeah, I'm a bit masochistic) and I play around with the highlights and shadows using halftones, random dots of dust reflecting light, cloudy stuff, gritty terrain, so on. I enjoy mixing a bunch of things and seeing how it looks like. sometimes it's simply awful, sometimes it's amazing, but it's def worth trying.there's more advanced stuff, but it's not necessary rn imo

if you allow me, I'll quickly just add some stuff as an example, to the helmet and the bg. I think the current drawing is good, considering how you seem to be learning quite fast, so I wouldn't spend even more time with it, and would move on. but I'd love to try adding some quick stuff to it, just so, maybe, you decide to do similar things in the future.

no need for >>42274217 if you are that helps more but ultimately its down to your discretion. just draw a bald pony on one layer then draw hair styles on another until you hit one you like or alternatively if you have a hair style you like fine references for it then apply to pony how you see fit. the hardest part really is finding a color pallet and finding the perfect balance of design. best thing you can do is Keep It Simple Stupid, limit facial or body markings to one or two more makes them look diseased unless your drawing a straight up irl animal, make the mane easy to reliably draw with a simple 2 or, at max 3 tone pallet. makes it way easier to draw trust me. if you like visible hoofs and fetlocks add them but don't go full tumblr with them. try to keep things clean and easy to remember, If you cannot recall how to draw your oc from memory alone then its to over complicated. at the same time going to simple makes the oc look lazy and derivative, if they look like a clone of a million other ocs then it not going to get interest what so ever. the key is balance and you are going to have to try and fail from experience. try to avoid hard color palettes in favor of pastel colors, you can find pallets on google easily by typing in "pastel color palettes" then find one you like a lot and use that. for cutiemarks take inspiration from the show, for names I cannot help you cause I'm not good with them.

Define why you want one, it can be any reason. Make one on your own based on existing designs-- be it an OC or show character. If you like long hair, give it long hair. If you like mares, make her a mare.
Your OC must have functional digestive systems also that's a rule too, intake and output, etc.
Don't gotta' think about it too hard in most cases.

I'll add on to this that things like clothing or accessories (hats, saddles, glasses, etc.) can go a long way to give an OC a good bit of visual flair without going overboard. Nice use of the pencil, this thread despite the name has a lot of gem that honestly put me on shame.

Want to make some personalized keychains and stickers myself so I tried to make one to experiment with the style. I'm in doubt if the shaky line work has any charm or would it better to use Inkscape and the curve tools instead of the pencil. Kept the check board background because I ended up getting used to.

Tf shit, need to learn how to draw humans and pick tome consistent style.

Shaky lines are nice when it's uniform. You could try increasing the stabilisation to get smoother and more controlled arcs without needing to vectorise it in inkscape.

I'll be real. Anatomy is pretty hard, what you can do in-between getting into is to hard references screenshots and existing art. When you learn the ways anatomy is gonna get almost by instinct. At least you're trying to learn muscles and bones that is not an easy nor funny thing.

Hello fellow leftie, the other anon is right it's mostly repition of circles and curved lines if you are using your whole arm (fingers, wrist, elbow and shoulder) to draw. Be mindful of some of the lines you make and change according to how you want it too look like. I usually do a couple circles, lines and cubes as warmup before I start on my drawings for the day like pic rel (a lot of scribbling today I'm usually a bit more organized). With time your lines will be more confident. Draw a box first couple of lessons are pretty good.

Today's lazy doodles and my various pones for the day. Magma has proven to be really fun, I encourage some of you to join in on the /bale/ channel. I had no energy to clean anything up further today.

How does this pregnant mare look? I'm trying for a size that's quite plump, but not ridiculous. A critique or redline would be awesome if anyone wants to. I'll probably clean up and color sometime this week, maybe adding a background if I can make a bed or pillow look right underneath her.

It looks lovely and very clean. It is going to be saved and look at again later tonight.
A bed would be pretty simple to add in, I did this in a few minutes to show what I mean. I did it in one point, but it's really up to you how you want to tackle it (or just wing it and not bother with perspective points). You've got some real thick contour lines there, so if you do that with the background also, you might have a hard time pushing the soft fabric of the quilt around unless you switch to a softer/pressure sensitive brush. Your linework is wonderful and thick (as is the mare!). I love looking at it and your she is really really pretty. It doesn't necessarily look like she's pregnant, but that's for the because you cannot see the belly at this angle. In terms of redlining the body itself, I would maybe raise where the up a bit more towards her snout. Other than that, I wouldn't fiddle around with much else, get a background in and have fun with colour, then move onto the next pone. Good work anon.

Oh doi, I saw the belly as part of her leg. It took me a little bit of looking away from it to see it for what it was, oops. You may way to avoid your lines kissing at the same angle like that since it does create a bit of visual confusion. Even though the line isn't jutting from the hind, it does create a bit of visual tension when it's too perfectly lined up like that. There's less depth to it, especially when the contours are all the same uniform line weight/size.
You could just shift the figure around a tiny bit so you avoid that from happening. It would make sense here since she's hiking her butt up and her torso is folding down into the bed, so her belly would jut out a tiny bit below the top of the hind anyway. It could be as simple as just hiking her legs up a tiny bit or the barrel of her torso down a bit. You'll help push the form of the belly out since you won't homogenise it with the kissing of the two lines at the top. I'm never really one to give advice so I hope this makes sense and is useful. I really like the drawing and hope the background goes well.

It's a good piece, I like the form of the Zyn can. You could try out doing some pony gestures drawings where you really push the pose. You could also work on your shapes to make em look more 3d when doing the lines. That will help later when oyu introduce shading into the mix, studying values and colour theory are really essential then too.

I think he means the lines around the veins are too thick, almost as if the veins are protuding off of the dick grotesquely instead of being nestled snugly under the skin. Not like the veins need to be smaller, more like they need to be shallower in the skin like the veins on a leaf, not like the vines that wrap around a tree.

I'll chime in and play devils advocate a little since I've done big ol veins in dicks before. Artists like syuro draw pretty massive/hyper veins in his dicks, I would study his art in the past a fair bit. It's stylistic, and very over the top, but it doesn't clash with since he uses tone and careful contouring/linework. I'll upload an example from a psd I have of his, it should show what I mean.

Try synthetic, very low temperature fireable clay. Polymer clay can be fired in a home oven. You'll need to learn how to now have it come out brittle, there's a lot of guides online, but it is possible.
For bigger masses, you'd probably want to vertically slice and scoop the middle out so it doesn't explode in the oven. After, you'd just glue them together once they're all fired and ready. Certainly is possible to make some good results without a kiln.

not bad, competently done, decent lighting, a nice subdued color palette. my only suggestion would be instead of dulling the background character to make the foreground character pop maybe try a blur effect of some kind. a Gaussian blur is what I'd personally would recommend, it creates a better sense of depth without dampening the colors and making the secondary character look flat. I'd also recommend it for the mountains and lava lake in the back too for the same depth reason. if you layer it right and add a mild blur to the guy and then a heavy blur of the farthest portion of the bg it would add depth while drawing the eye towards the pony, think of it like the blurring effect on a camera or how in real life shit that's far away is really blurry if you're not focused on it. my other suggestion would be to motion lines or a blur effect to the pick axe and bandanna ties to add some more weight to it, and a sense of movement.
sorry for the un-requested suggestions, I just wanted to drop my 2 cents on it while giving it a (you). I'll try to keep an eye out on you cause i think it would be neat to see how you progress artistically from here.

the anatomy is overall fine, a bit too fetishy for my tastes but I don't see any glaringly obvious flaws. the only suggestion I have though is for the jawlines on the side of the head. they are pinched in too aggressively, the key to good anthro is balancing out the pony elements with human elements to avoid the uncanny valley effect where the character is simultaneously too human and not human looking enough. If you want to keep the exaggerated cartoony faces and heads you gotta make the bodies match and vice versa. also I'd recommend caution with posting anthro board wide as anthro is outright banned board wide even when censored, you run a high risk of getting banned. /bale/ is kind of an exception as the mods are lenient in moderating the thread so you can kinda get away with shit you wouldn't able to in other threads elsewhere on the board.

To clarify: Your guns look fantastic in the picture, and one can tell that you really bothered to make it very close to your reference; because you made it instantly recognizable as the rifle you were trying to depict, which is something not many artists bother to do. Particularly ones who ACTUALLY "don't know fucking shit about guns".
Just the fact that you included small details such as the single little finger groove in the grip that allowed me to whine about it being an M16A2 shows that you at least very much care about the guns you draw! Like the cool reload pose with a look down into a magazine that's actually filled with cartridges and everything. It's a real treat! (autism ramble over)
