I’d take him under myself, but that would never be allowed.” Spike mumbled something and chuckled, but she was ignoring him.

I found out recently that most anons haven't even read the book for The Last Unicorn, some don't even know it was a book. This is a bad thing because I love that book and think it is much better than the movie. More people need to read it and give me book reports so I can hear how they feel about my favorite characters and the symbolism offered in the story.

The movie has grown on me a little, but it just bothers me that specific lines that I loved ended up getting cut, or how everyone seems to touch the unicorn all the time despite that being a major device for showing schmendrick's insecurities and distain. The themes on mortality were mostly cut and the little bit they left just felt obligatory and held no weight. I loved the dream meetings at the end of the book and the conversation with Lir but those got cut and replaced in a weird way. It also bothered me how towards the end before Lir's sacrifice, they rushed through his conversation with schmendrick and took away his good lines while attributing the final push towards his heroism onto Lir despite it having originally been egged on by schmendrick. I'm less bothered by how they cut the scenes where they traveled before running into the band of thieves, though I would've liked the scene of the unicorn in the field with the animals. The movie cutting Hagsgate and the curse out only mildly made things weird but they got it to work out even if I'd have rather they kept it in to further the character of Lir as well as showing off schmendrick's behavior with the money.
The movie did have one thing over the book, Christopher Lee was perfect as Haggard and I loved his monologue better than the one in the book that focused too much on Lir, would've loved if they kept the conversation he had with Lir while they were standing guard at the gate.

It also had fantastic music and very fitting visual style. Rest is just differences. I think movies are more than their plot, a combination of multiple arts equally important in their contribution to the enjoyment of the film, so story differences don't affect my enjoyment of printed work adaptations as much as they used to. Books are good supplementary reading if you wanna get in depth with characters and such. But the movie stands perfectly well on its own, as confident adapted retellings usually do. I wouldn't lament people not reading the book when the film is just that good.

I agree, the art is nice, colors are all very dark, even the bright forest has a very cool pallette, the music is amazing when it's adding atmosphere but a couple of the tracks like the duet are a bit jarring. While the movie has grown on me as it's own thing it just saddens me how it could've been better if it really tried to match the themes. I always hear people say they hate schmendrick because they only know him from the movie that ruined his character. The prose of the book is also very beautiful so I would agree that that isn't really a better/worse comparison and is just two different forms. I do think the movie would be more enjoyable if you watch it before you read the book, I just went the other way around and couldn't help but notice every time part of a conversation was missing or the body language didn't match the scene.

I've read a version translated to my native language and even then noticed how enchanting the prose is, something that is sadly barely adaptable to a movie. It could've been better, yes, but as it is it's pretty unique too which I appreciate. Sometimes these loose adaptations have a distinct, overwhelming language of their own, visual and acoustical.

That's the case with most adaptations I think, I often postpone reading something when there's a movie I haven't seen based on it just to not be disappointed. Same with anime based on manga/LNs. I came to realize that the same effect can even be reached by books based on movies, for example Star Wars. The books based off of OT movies often touched on stuff left behind the curtains, something that'd be too clumsy to add to the movies but you can't help but want to see it and end up thinking it's more interesting because of all the additional details packed into the book.

I understand why a lot of adaptations aren't that good: too much content to adapt, abstracts that can't really make it in any other medium, the presumed difference in audience that makes production think nobody would be interested in a perfect adaptation, and the urge of directors to make the story their own or unpredictable to fans of the original. In context of adaptations, The Last Unicorn had the author working on the movie and it is maybe the most faithful I've seen an adaptation. It definitely helps to have oversight from the one who made it and keeping the majority of the dialogue 1-to-1 from the book. I just wish we got more unicorn and horse media that isn't blatantly for kids or trying too hard to not be.

Author working on the movie usually has nothing to do with how faithful the movie is, and especially with how good it is. You'll always be disappointed in adaptations if you expect 1:1 translation. Instead I think that in movies it's better to look for things only a movie can do instead of just the plot. That's like double satisfaction, first you enjoy the movie for the actors, the cinematography, the score, and then you enjoy the book even more for the advanced takes on characters and writing. Though to be honest some books that got hyped up by the movies have been a bit disappointing for me personally. Some directors just know better how to make something worth watching.

Just because of FiM? Nobody in the industry gets why FiM was a success, I think it's impossible to replicate now, horses or no horses. For good horse-based media in general, well, Steel Ball Run is coming out whenever soon.

Considering the Sandman series on netflix is terrible and has the creator of the comic series in charge of basically everything, it's true that having them work on it isn't a guarantee of it turning out good.
That one older live action disney movie Horse Sense barely has any horses in it but it really had a lot of soul when it came to the parts about horses. It's really rare to have it work and not be "this is a unicorn it acts like rainbows and glitter and sells toys exclusively!" I hope to get more of any type of media that is horse/unicorn focused that doesn't just rely solely on that fact for the characters. FiM of course falls into a lot of archetypes and tropes but that's because it had to be, the fact that it got more was just because it actually had spirit despite being made for toys and children. It really found a good place between being about ponies and being able to have characters that don't rely heavily on being ponies. I've never read the warrior cats books but I feel something similar, in the sense that it is a thing that goes beyond just "these are cats" and is able to exist as a world and story, could be a push in the right direction. Horse books feel a lot like ranch romance for old women or little girl books about a girl and her horse, not enough that can capture the heart of what it is to love horses and how they each have their own personality and lives beyond sugar cubes and running.

I've been really disappointed in the quality of nendos lately, they've just been worse and have less options. I love twilight and will likely preorder when they open, but the fact it will most likely have almost no customizable options beyond maybe one extra leg to put her front hoof down is not at all fit for the original idea of nendos.
