Bat ponies only exist in isolated enclaves anymore. A thousand years ago, shen the Lunar Rebellion occurred, many bat ponies supported Princess Luna. Of course as we know, the conflict did not end in their favor, and bat ponies were ostracized and banished as a result, their numbers decimated by the vengeful.
They managed to survive, primarily by hiding. There are small communities here and there. As with their ancestors, they tend to build in large caverns, and as a result of their past, they are highly resentful and distrustful of outsiders.

Quick reminder on bat pony reproduction:
Bat ponies can reproduce with most intelligent species. Batness is extremely dominant and the result is nearly 100% bat pony. Only bats are coming out of that thing. Bat pony DNA is so dominant, the offspring is 90% skewed to the gender of the parent, it being hard to 'donate' your x/y chromosome.
They were potentially created by Luna in hopes that all ponies would become nocternal eventually. However, bat ponies tend to be low-iq coom-brains so it didn't work. The other ponies, basically no other intelligent species are dumb enough to fuck the bats.
Instead, bat ponies are a very small minority in Equestria, living in small colonies in remote locations.
When two bats mate, the result is obviously a bat pony. The gender ratio is 50-50.
Young bat mares leave home in search of a mate. 90% of the time this ends up being a male bat pony. She'll live in the shadows, choosing a mate, slowly stalking her future husband... until eventually she makes her move, barging in, attempting to rape him and loudly declaring that she's his new wife now.
Historically, only male bat ponies have ever been into this. If a bat mare tries this with a pegasus stallion (it happens sometimes) she'll get shut down hard. Her instincts won't let her leave her new house, but typically her new pegasus (or whatever) family will keep her around as a friend-zoned 'crazy aunt' who lives in the attic. She will die a virgin.
Bat stallions have no idea why everypony else doesn't like having a crazed mare barge in and immediately get pregnant. They see flirting with, dating, trying to seduce, etc, girls as pathetic and comical. If you're a real stallion, one will come to you!
Enter humans. Due to recent shifts in their society, human females 'choose the bear'. Their males are downtroden and desperate. So when a bat pony girl flies in, declares she's his wife... he's often desperate enough to just go along with it.
Bat girls rarely get to interspecies-breed so this excites her reproductive urge and she often produces 6-12 foals. Again, bat pony genes are intensely dominant so the kids are all bat ponies and 90% female. It's an accomplishment to even put a kid of your own gender in her womb.
Because bat pony females massively outcompete human females at reproduction, human cities tend to become bat pony cities very quickly. This is compounded by bat fillies tending to 'groom' human boys but that's another story.
There's a period where the bat population is massively skewed female, but once bats are the vast majority in an area, they go back to bat x bat breeding and the gender ratio becomes 50/50 again.
Fearing a bat takeover, various governments have implimented polices that accidentally made the situation 'worse'.
It's possible for a bat stallion to have kids with a human woman, but they see talking to girls are demeaning, prefering to just wait at home for one, so this very rarely happens.

Bat girls generally don't like places where they might be found. In cities they tend to stay in back alleys and abandoned buildings. But more often they live in less travled parts of forests and wildeerness.
It's best to avoid these places altogether to avoid 'picking up bats'.

It does happen. The main thing is that bat stallions won't approach females. They see it as demeaning, that one should come to them so that rules out 90% of women.
The ones who really want families though will likely be able to get one by approaching a bat stallion. They are incredibly 'easy'.
Buuuuut the woman in question will only give birth to bat ponies so this only takes the family-oriented women out of the gene pool.
