Finished a run with the best schizophrenic utopian a few days back. When every major griffon power left on the continent goes to war with you after beating the Empire an Riverlands made for a great finale.

The best way to start playing HoI4 is WITHOUT the DLCs. When you're just starting out, you don't want a plane, or tank, or ship designer. Get them when you figure out the basics.
After this, boot up the vanilla game (so, no EAW) and play the tutorial. Play it until you can beat Ethiopia with ease.

After that, it's time for EAW. Use this for help with divisions. It will lead you to victory.

Wingbardy is the best country to start with. After you finish it, I'd suggest Equestria - the Great War (and preparing for it) will be a difficult experience, but one that will make you into a proper general.

Remember - preparation bonus is your friend, supplies are your friends, encirclement is how you win battles, motorization and "upgrade bottlenecks" button are how you win wars. Infantry is for defending, tanks are for attacking. The mobilization and conscription buttons are clickable.

Watch a couple of tutorials, nothing in depth just basic ones. Avoid the DLCs until you're comfortable, all of them are just adding extra mechanics to manage. Play a smaller country the first time so you have things less to deal with. Play a landlocked country so you don't have to deal with navy until you're comfortable with land and air. Even when you are playing a country with a coast just spam submarines and naval bombers and never even bother to get actually comfortable with navy.
t. 500 hours of playtime, less than 5 of them in the base game

EAW plays basically identically to the base game so you don't need to play the base game first, you can just dive right into the Ponies, BUT Equestria itself is a difficult nation to play for beginners because you are going to get invaded very hard by a very strong nation (but it is insanely fun and if worst comes to worst you can get the communists to bail you out)
all you need to win is infantry with artillery in them (40 width, so in the infantry division designer fill the last column with artillery and then put everything else as infantry until the thing that says "Combat Width" is 40) and fighter planes and close air support planes
give your infantry recon, artillery, engineer and anti air support companies, you can mix in anti tank if you want but anti air kills most tanks and your close air support will take care of the rest

40 width infantry can survive against anything and with their artillery they can push against anything
the AI barely builds fighters or air bases so if you just build fighters you can very easily win the air war, and then with close air support you can buff your infantry so they just roll over everything and win every fight EZ
close air support can also murder boats so you don't need naval bombers, just build more close air support

if you fight an enemy you can't just push against, do one or both of two things:
>1. just let them attack you, defending is way stronger than attacking and this will wear down their units until they're weak enough that you can just walk over their divisions, the AI is retarded and will literally just send millions of its ponies to their deaths against your frontlines while you barely lose a few thousand. This is especially powerful with close air support
>2. (this one is more risky because you risk losing your units if things don't go well) move your units manually to cut off enemies on the map, walking behind them so the troops are no longer connected back to their capital. Troops that are encircled (see picrel) cannot be supplied or reinforced, so they just melt when attacked. This should go without saying but try not to let your own units get encircled, so when you try to encircle your enemies make sure to reinforce the flanks of the units that are pushing into enemy lines to encircle them.

Other things to keep in mind:
As soon as possible, upgrade your Economy Law. Certain countries may take a while to do this, but you want to mobilize your economy to Partial Mobilization and then War Economy as soon as possible because it massively buffs your factory output, eg how many guns you can make and how quickly you can build new factories to make new guns with.
On the topic of factories, for most nations you want to focus on building Civilian Factories for the first few years, then after about 2 or 3 years start building Military Factories instead - Civilian Factories build other factories, Military Factories make guns

continuing this, it could be worth it to start out with a minor nation that is allied to Equestria like The Crystal Empire or New Mareland
that way you don't have to worry about moving large amounts of troops or managing massive frontlines because the Equestrian AI will handle most of that for you, you're basically just there to support it
even if you fuck up really badly, the AI will probably still win so there's not much pressure
but you still get to fight the really big war and have fun with Hoi4 combat, plus you get to play as a nation with characters from the show like Shining Armor and Cadence

couple other things i forgot to mention
in your Focus Tree, it is generally a good idea to rush for the Focuses that increase your research slots because that will allow you to research more shit faster, so you can get really good economy buffs and really good weapons and planes before anyone else so you can roll over them easier
also, its a good idea to take any tile you see with a Railroad in it because supplies for soldiers have to actually pass through them. so if you cut off an enemy's railroad behind their troops, it will have a much harder time actually supplying them and their troops will weaken due to the lack of supplies, making them much easier to kill
similarly, you need to actually supply your own troops but its not very hard, you can just put one military factory each on Civilian Trains and Trucks and then you'll have all the logistics supplies you need for the rest of the game
when you click on a division you can click on a button labelled "supply priority" or something like that, you can click it until it becomes a picture of a truck which just means that it will use all the trucks and trains it can to be as supplied as possible so your divisions will be at full fighting strength as much as possible
if you ever notice a yellow or red crate on the icons of your units, that means that they're having supply troubles, if you've done the above then all you'd need to do to fix it is build or upgrade railroads leading from your capital to the frontlines, or to build Supply Hubs at the front lines so they can supply the troops near them easier

Congrats, OP! What was your favorite nation so far?

Haven't done this in a long time, but I did another nation in my EAW A-Z thing, This time it was Katerin Principality.

I decided to go harmonist for this one and strangely enough, its probably one of the harder Herzland runs. I actually tried this twice and both times, there was a crazy huge alliance against me. First time it was Wingbardy's faction allying with Aquileia, who had the Republican Pact and this time it was Prywhen, who pretty much owned all the south attacking me with the Republic, with of course pacted Aquileia and Skyfall declaring on me soon after. This led to a pretty challenging war that took a few tries to beat. Was pretty fun though.

Pros:
>Fun gameplay.
>Nice story.
>Good path variety.

Cons:
>If you played other Herzland nations, it can feel a bit same-y.
>Not as focused on conquest, so it can be boring unless you get into a situation like me.

I had a lot of fun with this, though that might be due to that big defensive war. If that doesn't happen, you will have an easy time since this nation doesn't get any wargoals. All the non-Herzland territories I have in the pic is from that one big war. I had to fight all of that at once. I'm not sure if I'd be as happy with it if something like that didn't happen though, so a non-harmonist route might be more consistently good.

Tobuck is really outside of my comfort zone. It's a failed african warlord state, so fittingly it doesn't seem to get any focuses to get good at medium tanks, and medium tanks are the only way I know how to play this game. I guess I'll try out this motorized infantry thing, see how drugged up zebras on technicals can carry me.
At least there are some solid plane focuses. That's nice.

Alesia's Tobuck gets a light tank focus. They're not going to be able to walk directly through the frontlines like whatever crack-fuelled rapewagen you might have used over on Equus, but any tanks are better than no tanks, especially in Zebrica. Just try to get them on the board as quickly as possible so they don't get completely outmoded by things like infantry AT.

Assuming you're getting spit-roasted by the Republic and Aquilea, spam infantry out to hold the wide front with the Republic and put all of your good divisions on Aquilea. The Republic is by far the weaker half of the faction, but their territory is too big for a quick capitulation, and turning your back on Aquilea is liable to get you overrun by them. In my Grover II run, I managed Aquilea by holding along rivers and sniping choice encirclements with my tanks - yeah, real creative, I know.

As a leader? No, not really. You get him too late, and he doesn't get any focus trees (or even Beakolini's focus tree), and by the time you switch parties you probably have 100% unaligned support and 0% fascist support, which you'll have to reverse.
I'm yet to compare the subtle differences in their focus trees, but monarchy does get slightly more interesting content. Beakolini does get some events, but none of them are interesting.
