Okay anons, over a year after becoming a balefag, I think I'm ready to evolve. My chinkpad is in my lap, my stylus in my hand, krita OPEN. The only thing holding me back? My gloves for drawing are just my regular ol' 5 finger anongloves. But that's no matter. Amazon exists. I'll fix that soon. Starting yesterday, I will be drawing at least one pony a day and showing it to you all. Here's pony #1, once I figure out krita or give up and go back to MSpaint, Pony #2 will rapidly approach. Okay, this program is so alien. What am I or what is it doing? I have no idea who's fault it is or what does what. I can see and choose tools and they do what they are intended to, but krita or my laptop can't seem to decide where my stylus is. At complete random it will stop acting like my stylus is exactly where it is on the screen and just place it elsewhere (still with perfect tracking!), the best way I could describe it is that it's treating the laptops entire screen as a touch surface, but "projecting" where I'm touching on the laptop to about where that may be on the sheet of paper I had given myself. I'm assuming this is how those screenless drawing tablets work. Maybe I should buy one of those and hook it up to my desktop instead of trying to use the wrong tool for the wrong task.
After a short and rather pitiful attempt, I'm going back to mouse and MSpaint for tonight.

aight, the primary beginner folly you made was using the same size circles for constructing the body as the head. for ponies what you mostly want to aim for in terms of proper proportions is the head being the biggest circle, the butt being second largest, then the chest being the smallest. for the body a rough bean shape is what you want for your base. legs on mares are typically one head length long, 1.5 max for a tall or gangly build or unless you are drawing the princesses. you did good on the leg anatomy the shoulder of the leg facing the lines up with the back of the neck as is proper for a pony, and is demonstrated in my sketch. the rear legs hock needs to be a little more protruded. I would recommend a little more shape to the raised leg but it is fine, I usually avoid putting the leg in that position cause it looks a little odd to me but that's just my preference. Id say for raised leg shapes finding show screenshots to use as refs where the characters are moving their legs to copy wouldn't do you any harm, do keep in mind the show is cartoony so they do tend to move their limbs in weird ways and to only use the exaggerated movements when you want your shit to be extra cartoony and you are good. my sketch is entirely for demonstrating proportions, shapes and rough volumes. will try to remember to keep an eye out for you to keep track of your progress, welcome aboard!

Day 3. I still find myself struggling a lot with side profile snoots, so I ended up superimposing an image of a pony's face underneath to trace the chin line. For one, I hope that that actually helped me learn the line and not just handicap my lack of drawing ability. It's a cool concept! But I'm gonna nit-pick all the gun autist things.
I'd like her to lean her body more into the rifle, since the CheyTac M200 fires quite a stout cartridge. I'd make sure the butt-stock is actually in contact with her shoulder, and have her lean her head down and towards the viewer to give her a good cheek-weld as well as line her eye up properly with the scope.
I've drawn an example pose with a line-of-action/recoil path. Now, I opted for a flashy and dramatic pose where she is leaning her stubby pony body way forward into the recoil, but I've drawn a little stick figure in the bottom that might be a more realistic pose, since one would like to get as much of ones body beneath the rifle's center mass as possible to stop ones arms from sagging, since this is a very heavy precision rifle at ~16kg (35lbs), that is meant to be shot prone. Making the pose more dramatic is also the reason why I made the head tilt a little extra exaggerated, to really show her bearing down on the rifle.

Ponies shooting guns built for humans will usually give them a more human, anthropomorphized, pose than one might hope for, but there's not a whole lot one can do about that without redesigning the firearm or using unicorn magic to just hover the gun. There is also the divisive question whether one should give the gun hoof sized trigger-guards and carry handles so the ponies can use the gun at all, or not. It depends how autistically picky you want to be, and if you are ready to sacrifice a gun's cool looks for goofy pony ergonomic realism or not.

clip studio yeah, i use it on pc/samsung and its pretty great imo. ill snag brushes from friends on my pc and mega it to my tablet since the cloud function is a bit quirky. you can also set up your preferred layout on one and carry it over to the other, etc. pretty much the only downside is just the monthly payments but with how often i use it its worth it

Years ago I thought learning to do this was an straight path where you succeed and until then you could only practice and not have fun at all, that bored me even before starting to do anything (also fear to be absolutely bad). My take now is that you have to learn to develop abits that enforce you to do and learn at the same time and look for some motivation having a clear goal. Day 10. Wanted to try and draw a tough angle with zero body shape references to see if I could really draw mare, or if I was just supplementing myself with a shit ton of refs. Biggest challenge ironically enough was the ears. She came out a little filly-sized but here is a throwback to one of my very first practice sesh slopmares from over a year ago that some anons and frens both liked.

instead of using darker or lighter versions of the base colours for shading the opted to use a darker tone of the colour for said shading (example if youre shading blue youd use purple vice versa)

I like how Cherry Berry seems to be consistently fascinated by flight. She owns a hot air balloon, we see her flying in a helicopter, she even dresses up as flying animals for Nightmare Night, a bee and a dragon. I imagine she had a lot of fun with kites as a filly.

It uses very little actually. Known forms, depth cues (things in front otf other things), contur lines, contrast and simple shading (less light/full shadow) to archive its effect.

Like it or not but I think you can actually learn a lot and apply this knowledge to pony.

I just cheated by line extracting and coloring under the layer, I plan to properly do it later today so I can fix some parts that are bothering me. Focusing the eyes a bit and moving the ear are two that immediately come to mind. Didn't plan on posting this since it was just me trying to get a feel for it and took me like 15 minutes to color like a coloring book, but the messiness really grew on me. She still doesn't have a name.

I finished actually digitizing it instead of just a simple line extraction. Second time using something other than just pencil on paper and I think the 6th or 7th time I've drawn pony, hope I can keep motivated and draw lots more mares.
She has the eyes of a mare who will do anything to kidnap anon, he will be forced to work in the banana milk factory with the other monkeys. She will treat her special monkey well.
