Hold on I just realised. how did she name him "tank" when she doesnt know what a tank is?
"Tank" comes from WW1 and the British lie of them being water carriers, right? Equestria would have to have their own version of the vehicle and an explanation for why its called that, which they dont, so what the fuck was she talking about?

lauren faust did before she got the axe. she said she didnt want any technology "more modern than a wheelbarrow"
and then in the comics they had a tv and stuff, and gradually they started adding modern technology to Equestria. culminating in EQG with fully 21st century tech and "Pony Life"

She had preferences but she was by no means making sure to avoid modern elements. The whole show was loosey goosey from the start, that was both its appeal and what ultimately made it very hard to maintain the same tone all the way through.

The most important reason for her to break these rules was always "If it's needed to tell a good joke, do it." And it's a good mantra to live by in this industry. Cartoons need to be funny, first and foremost.

In a lot of these cases it's also simply that it's easy to understand for an audience of children. If ponies genuinely lived a pre-industrial revolution lifestyle it would mean regularly including elements that the audience will not understand, they know modernity and thus those elements get included.

I can wrap around the idea that tank is named after water tank instead of it's WW1 definition of the word.
What's more weird is that they also have modern military uniform and use the word "camouflage" in a season 2 episode despite the word itself only added to the English language during WW1.

Then why does Rarity use a sewing machine instead of a loom? Furthermore why does Rarity (and every other fashion pony in Equestria) follow mainly 20th and 21st century fashion trends? Or go to a Spa? Or even have cameras? All of these things happened during Season 1 mind you, you can't handwave these away by saying that they happened because Lauren lost control of the show

Yep, she named him after a tank, a big and secure container with few openings for valuable contents, like water, gas etc.

Nah, she did mention he's slow and hard "like a tank", so yeah it's a reference to armoured vehicle.

The final scen when Rainbow Dash stayed reading close to Tank instead of going to enjoy the winter with her friends was quite touching, especially after all she did to try and stop the winter. The fact that she really didn't want to let go of her buddy and going as far as shitting everything up and going against nature even though in the end it was all useless and nature made it's course anyway. I just found it all really poetical and full of meaning and emphasizes her loyal nature.

>now Luna being devastated over ponies going to sleep
Luna deciding to punish herself by committing to always have nightmares in her sleep is also quite deep.

Oh also I just realised this person made a silly post >>42426172 or rather I totally OWNED them with my screenshot. Lauren Faust cared about the technology level in the show, or moreso she cared that it didn't feel too much like the modern human world, but they didn't care about throw away lines about tanks or naming a pet Tank. Or names like the CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS. Or Spike saying "Fu Manchu beard" or Applebloom saying "French" they really don't care about those kinds of things because it's all just a means to an end of a funny joke, Rarity's tank line rhymed, so, ok we got a rhyme next scene.
And it's obvious where the line is drawn for a joke, well obvious to the original ideas man, but not to the people who take over these things. In the Yakity Pinkie Episode when she just slides from the end of the world back to Ponyville, you can't really do that for a joke it just doesn't fit the show. Rainbow Dash stopping a leaking dam in the Mare-Do-Well episode, it's not really worth it to show a giant power dam which doesn't really fit Ponyville, just for one joke. But a line about tanks is funny.
Think about Spoingebob the episode where they talk about Mr. Krabs's backstory, and they say "After the war, Krabs fell into a deep depression." It's funny because, what war took place in the spongebob universe? But if they actually showed footage of the war it would have not fit at all. You should know what you can and cannot do, it's really basic 101 writing stuff, but a lot of people hired to work on a little girls toy commercial show aren't very bright.
Anonymous No.42427469 [Report]
>>42427362
I know that. What I mean is the interpretation one can gather, that goes beyond what the episode actually shows.
Because that episode is pretty obviously a very clever and light way to touch the thematic of loss.

Just like the episode about Luna cleverly touches the themes of regret and mental disorder.

>Think about Spoingebob the episode where they talk about Mr. Krabs's backstory, and they say "After the war, Krabs fell into a deep depression."
It's heavily implied that the war mentioned is WW2. People forget that the show is set in the 90's. We do see tanks in some of the post movie 2005-2008 episode and the second movie has a WW1 parody.
Anonymous No.42427546 [Report] >>42427566 >>42427745
>>42427525
Yes I know it's a joking reference to WW2. That's the joke. But that's obviously not literal, the cartoon crab known as Mr. Krabs didn't literally partake in WW2. That's why it's funny, what war took place in the spongebob universe. The mention of war is funny. Because it's absurd. But they didn't show B roll of violent war footage. And they shouldn't have, not even jokey war footage wouldn't have worked. They know what to show and what not to.
Some jokes can only be mentioned by name because it leaves it open which only makes it funnier. The joke would actually be LESS funny if they showed anything from "the war" itself during that clip. So no, no one has forgotten obvious things about spongebob.

You can also get into mistakes which they did with Manehatten. Manehatten is a joke, it's kind of funny, I guess. But then they actually showed it and decided to make it just like Manhatten and it didn't fit with the MLP universe at all. It should have just stayed a funny mention.

>Manehatten
Tbf manehattan has been shown in the show since season one back when Ms. Faust was still in charge. Idk why she put it either considering her original vision of equestria is closer to LoTR middle earth.
Anonymous No.42427577 [Report]
And another example, probably the greatest example in the entire show. Starswirl the Bearded, it's funny that Twilight dresses as this magician unicorn that none of the stupid idiots country ponies, none of the plebians know about. And then they completely ruined the joke in the later seasons. But I guess it's just development, character development story development. Oh yes.

It's so confusing that you used to actually have people talk about "character development" I remember people using that term while talking about MLP when it was airing, it was very strange, some people just have no concept no understand of the things they watch. There's no "character development" in FiM, there's no story development. "Oh gee I hope Squidward stops being grouchy someday! And I hope Fluttershy stops being shy. I hope spongebob becomes the owner of the kursty krab and Twilight becomes a princess."
The shows aren't the exact same at all, but the point is, FiM was a show of specific character archetypes that exist in a specific town to make jokes and likeable intereactions.

Manehatten was shown in season 1 differently than when it was introduced properly. The season 1 brief glimpse of it is itself a joke, they have the statue of liberty pony fly across the screen and they have some small buildings some buildings that might look a bit big that fly across the screen in ghost form I don't feel like rewatching the scene. But it was not the same thing, it wasn't in your face it was very much up to interpretation what the city still looked like.
Anonymous No.42427608 [Report]
>>42427585
The one street shot of Manehattan we get does a fun thing where it still has distinctly medieval elements alongside the sort of early 20th century New York feel, but then the interior of Aunt and Uncle Orange's apartment is I'd say late 60s-early 70s.
