>I was told it still has limits
It does, but it has improved drastically thanks to Valve pouring a lot of development time, resources, and money into making it better for the Steam Deck (which runs on GNU/Linux). Nowadays when something doesn't work on Wine it tends to be the exception rather than the norm. In any case you can always dual-boot GNU/Linux with any Windows version you'd like, which would let you reduce your dependency on Windows to a bare minimum. That's what I do in theory, but in practice I haven't booted up my Windows 10 install in over a year, I just don't need it really.
>oh no it's very well known, I know exactly what can happen. My files is all I've got, man. 25 years of uninterrupted internetting, parts of history that are super gone.
As an archivist myself data loss is one of the greatest fears I have, so yeah, I understand. I'd recommend you already have a 3-2-1 backup system in place already though, which would be more than overkill for safely switching OSes. If you can't go all out like that, then I'd recommend at least backing up your entire hard drive to another one before doing anything else. If you decide to boot off of a GNU/Linux USB, you can use GNOME Disks (a GUI app) to copy your existing drive exactly onto another one, literally on the level of bits.As for Windows, I honestly have no idea what backup software is good these days so my only advice there would be to do thorough research.
>twice as scary as the aforementioned lobotomy
I've moved around a ton also and I know it's a massive pain in the ass but good lord anon, I'd take a move any day over a lobotomy.
>It's more new hardware that scares me, that's where I'm told the hard-rooted spyware shit is now.
Unfortunately there's nothing we can really do about that right now other than using GNU Boot-ed Thinkpads from 2007. On the plus side if the unironic glowies aren't actively chasing you down you probably don't have anything to really worry about on that front. I'd personally be exponentially more worried about the spyware shit even in an LTSC version of Windows 11, it's impossible to fully remove the garbage from Windows.
>haha I'm not that old
For what it's worth I have my GNU/Linux systems configured to play the Win95 startup chime every time I boot up my computer ^:) It's those little things from back when the world wasn't absolute shite that make the difference.
>got on 7 a couple years ago
Pretty late to that bandwagon huh? 7 was the last great version of Windows, I ran it for a while.
>what's left of life and hopefully eithop wanting to.
Damn, I really hope you feel better soon anon. I've been there before many times, it's not fun.
It's hard to do anything without having the motivation to do it, I highly recommend watching this talk to gain that motivation. It's such a refreshing view on things in today's "you will own nothing and be happy" corpo hellscape. And he's right about everything.
