>i know what a system32 folder is
And I guarantee you've never ever actually gone mucking about in there, and on the astronomically low chance you actually did go mucking about in there at some point, I guarantee it broke your system if you made any changes. You can't mess with system files on Windows and have it result in a functioning Windows. On GNU/Linux you can, though you don't have to.

>I know how to go to c program files..
On Windows, Program Files is important since it's fairly common to manually install software there. On GNU/Linux you almost never manually install software since everything pretty much already exists in your package manager or Flatpak (the equivalent of an App Store for Free Software). That being said, you can run Wine, which lets you run Windows programs on GNU/Linux, and you get your file hierarchy just like you like it, with system32, Program Files, and all that jazz. You can navigate to Program Files and double click on your exe files to run them and all that.

>I'm too old to start over.
Bullshit, it's never too late to learn something new, and it's never too late to liberate your computing. Installing GNU/Linux has never been easier than it is now, since a lot of versions of it ("distros") have worked hard on making the install and introduction very user friendly. Besides, it's not starting over, it's a new chapter in your computing.

>I would also like to install in place
You can install GNU/Linux on a USB and boot from it without changing your existing Windows install. That's what I'd recommend if you want to try it out. The easiest way of doing this is to use two USBs: one for the installer, another as the target drive. If you do this however make absolutely sure you're choosing to install on your USB and NOT your Windows hard drive to not overwrite your files. Again this shouldn't be scary, most installers have a GUI that shows you the list of drives and the sizes of each. It's almost certain your USB would be smaller than your hard disk so it should be pretty easy to pick out.

>reformatting feels like lobotomizing myself and just relying on a backup brain.
That reads a lot like fear of the unknown to me, which is totally understandable, but honestly, it's not scary or difficult. Instead of viewing it as a lobotomy why don't you view it under the much more accurate metaphor of moving homes to a much nicer, roomier house that has the added perk that there aren't hidden surveillance cameras installed in every room (including your bedrooms and bathrooms), and where you control the locks to your house instead of simply renting them from a landlord who can evict you for any bullshit reason he cooks up that morning?

>i just want it to be like my old computers. i'm very attached to how windows used to work.
I already answered the technical points, but in terms of look and feel you can configure GNU/Linux to look identical to any Windows version you'd like, this is called "ricing".
Here's an example for XP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2FmeHCw75Q

Here's Windows 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFFk875sI-E

You can find others for 10, 11, even Windows 95 if you're a boomer and proud of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5UeSj2F-yc

>fear of the unknown
oh no it's very well known, I know exactly what can happen. My files is all I've got, man. 25 years of uninterrupted internetting, parts of history that are super gone.
>moving homes
twice as scary as the aforementioned lobotomy. I'm two moves past "my last move" and I don't have it in me to do another. Not without massive riches to pay for movers to do everything for me.
>surveillance cameras
man i'm not using win10, and if I ever do get 11 it'll be LTSC (maybe one of these retraux versions like MillenniumSV (not that one, but one LIKE it)), so I'm less worried there. It's more new hardware that scares me, that's where I'm told the hard-rooted spyware shit is now.
>>42467981

>95
haha I'm not that old. but I do have nostalgia for '98, and it pisses me off that XP removed the ability to customize folders. I was still usin' XP til I finally got on 7 a couple years ago.

anyway thank you for talking to me about this, I hope it makes more sense now. I'm just going to stumble my way through what's left of life and hopefully either die soon or stop wanting to. I doubt I'm going to regret not learning linux, i'm just going to be ~broadly sad~ that everything's gone.
Anonymous No.42468049 [Report] >>42468059
>>42468007
>I was told it still has limits
It does, but it has improved drastically thanks to Valve pouring a lot of development time, resources, and money into making it better for the Steam Deck (which runs on GNU/Linux). Nowadays when something doesn't work on Wine it tends to be the exception rather than the norm. In any case you can always dual-boot GNU/Linux with any Windows version you'd like, which would let you reduce your dependency on Windows to a bare minimum. That's what I do in theory, but in practice I haven't booted up my Windows 10 install in over a year, I just don't need it really.
>oh no it's very well known, I know exactly what can happen. My files is all I've got, man. 25 years of uninterrupted internetting, parts of history that are super gone.
As an archivist myself data loss is one of the greatest fears I have, so yeah, I understand. I'd recommend you already have a 3-2-1 backup system in place already though, which would be more than overkill for safely switching OSes. If you can't go all out like that, then I'd recommend at least backing up your entire hard drive to another one before doing anything else. If you decide to boot off of a GNU/Linux USB, you can use GNOME Disks (a GUI app) to copy your existing drive exactly onto another one, literally on the level of bits.As for Windows, I honestly have no idea what backup software is good these days so my only advice there would be to do thorough research.
>twice as scary as the aforementioned lobotomy
I've moved around a ton also and I know it's a massive pain in the ass but good lord anon, I'd take a move any day over a lobotomy.
>It's more new hardware that scares me, that's where I'm told the hard-rooted spyware shit is now.
Unfortunately there's nothing we can really do about that right now other than using GNU Boot-ed Thinkpads from 2007. On the plus side if the unironic glowies aren't actively chasing you down you probably don't have anything to really worry about on that front. I'd personally be exponentially more worried about the spyware shit even in an LTSC version of Windows 11, it's impossible to fully remove the garbage from Windows.
>haha I'm not that old
For what it's worth I have my GNU/Linux systems configured to play the Win95 startup chime every time I boot up my computer ^:) It's those little things from back when the world wasn't absolute shite that make the difference.
>got on 7 a couple years ago
Pretty late to that bandwagon huh? 7 was the last great version of Windows, I ran it for a while.
>what's left of life and hopefully eithop wanting to.

Also, if you can, I'd really encourage you to upload the public (non private/personal) stuff to the various archives, like the Internet Archive and https://iwiftp.yerf.org/ . It's clear that you value that data a lot, and rightly so. It would be a great service to everyone else who also values that golden age of the Internet if you uploaded what you saved so we can all collectively at least reminisce on what used to be an amazing feat of creativity and technology before the big corpos came in and took it away from us.

>the plan is [...]
I mean that plan works fine, but a gaming PC is wayyy more expensive than two $10 USB drives, just saying. If you wanted to, you could get up and running today or tomorrow (depending on your time zone) with a GNU/Linux distro without affecting your existing Windows install or files. Again I'll reiterate my warning though: whenever you install any OS be absolutely certain you pick the correct drive from the list, NOT your main Windows hard drive!
>I was told we know exactly what to do, and there are steps.
There are some experimental methods of neutering the Intel ME, with varying degrees of success, all of which have the potential of bricking your CPU from my understanding. But yeah no, nobody really knows fully what the fuck is going on down there other than the glowies themselves. In other words, shit's fucked m8. But again, you'd have to be pretty high up on their list to get targeted by that, would be my guess.
>that sure as fuck is how it worked for a solid decade, yeah.. god i miss old internet.

And it IS my problem (and that of every Linux user) because this hyperspecialization destroys all adoption of the OS itself, meaning less hardware support from companies. It's really not very niche. You can play all sorts of video games thanks to Proton and you can even run specialist software like UE5 and Maya. Of course, it's still lagging behind Windows and macOS and may always will, but Linux can still satisfy a ton of personal and professional use cases.
>But I'm sure you'll quip that this is a good thing now, as all Linux fanbois tend to do.
It's a mixed bag. Do I appreciate everyone having a choice? Yes. Do I wish the desktop was more coherent? Also yes. The reality is I'd run Haiku if I could. It's almost like the polar opposite of Linux: it has the most well-thought-out and coherent GUI out of all OSes available (even macOS has lost its way here), yet it has abysmal hardware and software support.

Yeah, I'm not an UX designer but just personally I find it counterintuitive rather often. Some people claim it's a ripoff of macOS (and KDE therefore is a ripoff of Windows UX), but at least on macOS you can still minimize windows, there is still a system tray, etc.
I was testing Fractal (Matrix chat client written for GTK) on GNOME since once every sometimes I like to check what's up on the other side of Linux desktop, but I found it very bizarre that by default:
>there is no minimize button
>there is no tray to which app could be hidden, with a new message indicator
>close button on window bar exits the app fully
This is uncomfortable for a communication program, which I would assume an average person wants to keep running to not miss new messages, but also doesn't want it to stay in foreground all the time. What, am I supposed to move its window to a virtual desktop? Not a terrible solution, but really counterintuitive.
At least GNOME as patched by Ubuntu is less confusing, when you're coming from Windows, KDE or even macOS, but the sour taste remains.

For the simple sites like those, you don't need much just basic HTML/CSS knowledge. I think the easiest way to start is to go through some youtube tutorial and then try to recreate a site you like. If you get stuck on something, you can use your browser’s devtools to inspect how things are done.
>How much would it cost me, in terms of money and time?
Like anon above said, <€100 a year for hosting/domain. As for time, you could probably start making similar sites within a month or two.

I would suggest some HTML and CSS tutorial first, after that you could look into static site generators like Hugo. The sites you've linked were built with some JS frameworks iirc, but it's not a requirement. I wouldn't suggest that for your first project anyway.
Unrelated but cool old-school HTML+CSS website: https://www.seat61.com/aboutme.htm

><€100 a year for hosting/domain
And there are decent free and simultaneously ad-free options, like Neocities or GitHub Pages (or GitLab, Codeberg, probably a few more), especially if you're ok with a subdomain like rarifag.neocities.org. Apparently Neocities has an HTML+CSS tutorial, I suppose this will be good given that their site seems inviting to non-techies. Very nice of them.
So, minimum cost = 0, time - it depends. You'll be fine if you treat this as a fun hobby rather than something serious.

I guess they've just decided it's not worth it financially, because they would have to not only develop a client, but also to provide official support for Wine shenanigans. In the meantime other people have created Heroic Launcher, which can be connected directly to a GOG account, becoming de facto GOG downloader + runner for Linux. I'm not sure if Lutris can download the games too, or if it expects you to obtain the installers from GOG website first, but it's been around before Heroic as well. Sidenote: cool to see those launcher projects merging their Wine tooling into one shared effort as UMU.
