This is one area I'll concede to the seasonwunners and wingwhiners: the facial expressions of later FiM (starting roughly around S6/S7) were a little odd and not as good as the earlier seasons.
Tiny-snout squishy-face just feels...off. I think for me it's because it feels like it betrays a rigid, logical body structure. It's the same criticism I have with the Movie Style.
...That said, early seasons also have occasional moments like

Also this proves that the designs of specifically the bodies got better with time. Dash's anatomy is horrifying here, and she also looks like the size of a foal.
Season 1 was truly a different beast.
